What? Why do I have to start the Heroes thread this week? I don't even really like the show that much. But I'll change my tune if every episode from here on in is like this week's. I thought this was real good. The secret origin of the man they call Sylar was well done. I liked how he resembles Clark Kent more than a little and that he is/was a Watchmaker, a cool callback to the origin of Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen. I liked the story of how ne'er-do-well Eden fell under the sway of Horned Rimmed Glasses, who to me is by far the most interesting character on the show. What a shame Mohinder's dad is dead as I think he's much more compelling than Mohinder himself. I liked the untold secret origin of how Claire became a cheerleader. And I liked the Hiro's tragic inability to save the cute waitress no matter how much time traveling he did. Good stuff all around.
It was another awesome week, especially the backstory of Nathan's wife's accident. He flew on instinct! No wonder he hates his power.
While it was clearly established that Hiro couldn't prevent Charlie from dying, it was less clear HOW she ended up dying. Did she die from the blood clot? That would mean Hiro did save her from Sylar.
As a CSI fan, I loved seeing who Sylar got his telekinesis from. Poor David never gets any respect.
Another very strong episode that again answered & asked questions all at the same time - there is only one new episode left until January......
Nathan Petrelli is a scum bag - saved himself and sacrificed his wife - how can this guy ever be a HERO unless he too is driven by guilt like Peter Parker......always good to see Rena Sofer no matter what......
So Drunk Daddy killed Jessica and that is why Nicki needs her protection - did Drunk Daddy think he was seeing pink elephants when jessica beat him up ????
Evil next door neighbor girl almost looks hot with the shoulder length hair - she is so psychotic that I probably would have dated her back in the late 80's......
Hiro's storyline is consistently the strongest each week - why can't I shake this feeling that somehow he will eventually save Charlie from Sylar - I mean, wouldn't you want to save her too ????
Suresh created Sylar with his dismissive attitude toward him - can't wait to see Suresh's face when Sylar kills him......
So how many donuts did the cop wind up eating after evil next door neighbor girl got through with him ? And sex & eggs would have made my day feel a lot better today.......
I still hate Peter Petrelli......
Claire is the breakout star - we need to see if they can't add a little super strength to her awesome healing abilities......
and Sylar - a bitter geek - how did he know how to steal the CSI Assistant Coroner's telekinetic power and how many "Heroes" has he tracked down ? And why did they have to stop him before he killed Mohinder ????
the nuclear explosion on 11/8 - will it be Radiation guy imploding ?
Did Jessica miss ?

This was the perfect back-story episode! We needed some answers about Sylar... Crazy!! I'm thinking that maybe he is the mirror image of Peter. He seems to take on other Heroes powers, except he thinks that he has to "extract" them... eeewwww.

That didn't seem intentional on his part. He seemed like he wanted to be back in the car and didn't understand why he was flying and couldn't control it. That also sheds his whole rejection of Peter's claims of flight into a whole new light.
I'm confused by Hiro's time traveling. He went back in time and spent about four or five months with Charlie. He gave her the Japanese book and told her that she would die. Did he tell her when and how? I don't know what its like to have a terminal condition, but I can't imagine that it would make you passive enough with respect to your own existence to accept that you might be murdered at a given time. Did Hiro ever tell her the date that Sylar would kill her? Cuz, if I know that Hiro's got powers, no matter how skeptical I am, I'm staying home that day. Sorta like Doc Brown finally wearing the bullet proof vest.
What should have happened was Charlie stays home that day and the next day, when she doesn't show up for work again, Hiro finds her dead of the blood clot.
Anyway... does this mean that when Hiro & Ando first arrived at the diner a few episodes ago, that Charlie recognized Hiro and knew that if he's from the future she should just play along, or did all of Hiro's six month's prior exploits happen in a different timeline? His inability to teleport back after winding up back in Japan was sad. I'm surprised he couldn't call Ando and be all "I'm in Japan," once he figured out where he was, instead of making him wait at that diner for a few days. I suppose he burned out his cell phone battery on all his calls to Isaac.
Eden's barber sucks. The duct tape on the mouth was amusing, though.
I look forward to finding out more about Niki/Jessica's backstory. I also look forward to finding out what Sylar does with the brains once he gets them - how did he 'absorb' the telekinesis?
The one question that frustrates me that hasn't been answered is what is the deal with Mr. Bennet. I understand his role as concerned parent, but the fact that they haven't explained away whatever organization he's with and whether he's ultimately good or not is frustrating.
You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I just said...

Was it ever established that he did it on purpose? I think the theme of the episode was people realizing their powers for the first time, so he wouldn't even know that he *could* fly. He also seemed to be trying to reach down for her as he went.
I cannot tell you how happy I was to find out that Sylar is not Peter. Talking to people at work, we went over all of the different time traveling scenarios for that to work and they all seemed to be WAY to complicated for the average viewer to understand without leaving major plot holes. Why didn't Hiro tell Peter "Save the cheerleader, save the world... oh, and don't be such a dick in a few years" for instance.
The fact that Peter is not Sylar is so much greater than the idea that he might be. Peter seems so depressed when asked what his power is, and he has to say "I don't really have one" and has to watch all these other people with amazing powers that he wishes he could have. Now, when it comes to fighting Sylar, he is the only one that can stop him. Anyone else gets near him, they're torn apart. Peter will be the only person to be able to match Sylar in a fight.
Both have similiar powers, but it sets up the "Good vs. Evil" versions of basically the same ability to be a future epic battle.

Speaking of which, was that a "Back to the Future" reference I heard, when Hiro ended up calling himself in Japan?
Great Scott!
And I would also like to know how exactly Sylar extracted those telekinetic powers ... unless he was able to study the guy's brain once he cracked open the skull (like he can study the inner workings of a watch) and figured out what particular section of the brain activates the power, and thus was able to "program" his own brain to be able to pull it off. Meh, maybe.

I just watched the scene again on www.nbc.com and perhaps I was somewhat wrong in that he didn't leave her on purpose but I still think he is a scum bag and may turn out to be more of an evil hero than a good one.

That's a theory I've heard floated around on another board that I'm on - actually, that theory was one of soul absorption, but the general effect is the same. I like the plausibility of the idea.
What is interesting is I think this retroactively explains the fight Sylar had with Peter; more specifically, it explains why Peter didn't get any of Sylar's powers when they fought. (At least I don't think he did; I know he had Claire's regeneration.) Since Sylar had absorbed all the other powers, those powers weren't technically his. Sylar's power is absorption, so Peter gained the power of absorption, not the other powers.

You're on to something there. Though I don't think Sylar has absorption powers. His power revolves around how things fit together, including the mechanics of the human brain. But you're right about Peter. He wasn't able to borrow the TK power because it doesn't really belong to Sylar. It's "after-market", not "stock", if one were to use car terms.

How close in proximity does Peter have to be to get the use of someone else's power ? Does he have to be touching them in some way ? How long does he keep the use of the other person's power ? Can he have more than one of the powers at the same time ? He had been with Claire just prior to his jumping off the top of the building with Sylar and yet he healed like Claire. And why wasn't Sylar broken like Peter too ?

That's something else I've been wondering about ... Was he technically "dead" before Claire came into contact with him, or was he still exhibiting some vital signs and was "pulled back from the brink" right before the moment of expiration? If it was the former, does that then mean that Peter has seen what the afterlife is like (that would make an interesting subplot should the writers decide to pursue it further, perhaps throwing in something about Simone's dead father for good measure).

Well, Claire's been dead for hours before (she was even autopsied) so they could always go that route with her, although I think it might be best if they continue to leave spirituality out of the science fiction show. They've been good about it so far, but I think throwing in God, Heaven, Hell, etc. would just be an unnecessary mess.
Plus, I can only imagine what the internet rumor threads would be like then: "What if God is just this dude that has like, SUPER powers. Like if he was the first hero!"

Well to be honest, they haven't fought yet. Sylar threw some locker doors at him from across a hallway, and the only contact Peter had with him was when they grabbed each other and immediately fell off the roof. Peter could have had all of Sylar's powers there, but he was out cold and didn't wake up until Sylar was long gone.

Well, if you watch the hallway scene where Sylar throws the locker doors at him, they sway off -- they never touch Peter.
Therefore, I'm going to have a guess of about a 25-50 foot radius where Peter has his Rogue effect.
The question I have is if Sylar either eats the Heroes' brains or he "fixes" them with his watchmaking skills.

Actually, I could see him "fixing" *his* brain to gain their powers. I was thinking how funny it would have been if he had studied Charlie, then unknowingly gave himself a tumor/clot/whatever to gain her power.
Wild though - in his actions, he's both becoming special and eliminating all other people like him so he'll be unique. Craaazy.
Also, count me in on loving the David cameo. Poor dude.
I thought this was the biggest disappointment of the television season. They promised this big revelation of how the heroes got their powers and why they were chosen and all it was is some evolution mumbo jumbo. So basically they were chosen and got their powers just "cause it happened". LAME.

I, too, found this episode quite unsatisfying, but I'm not sure why. Perhaps it was because during half the episode somebody kept IMing me and asking me how to get a Wii. Sheesh.
I loved him the handful of times he popped up on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as well. His comedic timing was impeccable, as was his voice. To me he's probably second to only Bobcat Goldthwait in terms of all-time unique comedic voices.
