Head Coach of the Miracle on Ice U.S. Olympic Gold Medal Winning 1980 Hockey Team Herb Brooks killed in a one car accident in Minnesota on 8/11 www.espn.com . This probably should go into the Hockey Folder, but since its not Hockey Season and the Miracle on Ice Team transcends hockey, I put it here instead. Onto Herb: Has any coach ever caught lightning in a bottle with a team like Herb did in '80? Probably the greatest motivational coaching job in sports history.
Edit: You almost have to start thinking about cosmic forces when on the day Herb dies, HBO had scheduled a rebroadcast of Miracle on Ice.
(edited by redsoxnation on 11.8.03 2001) Cubs, White Sox and Red Sox fans unite. Its time to overthrow the German Government and re-install our beloved Kaiser. Remember, Kaiser ='s World Series victories.
The single reason I started watching hockey in my youth was the 80 Olympic team. Sad news. Sad news indeed. RIP Herb Brooks. Thanks for some of the most exciting times in our nations sporting history.
The team did indeed transcend hockey and the American public. I still get goosebumps hearing Al Michael's call, and I was only five months old when it happened. If there was ever anything that proves that hard work and dedication gives you a chance, this is it.
RIP Coach...
