In a word: No.

Well Youen....gamecube does kinda well yeah it does suck...but they won't quit because it's a good system for kids to play...it's not terrible it has a few good games....but it won't be a failure like dreamcast
No way will gamecube die. Nintendo puts out great games and thats theyre biggest strength. People are willing to buy the Gamecube just to play Nintendo's first party titles. I know that im gonna buy the cube just to get my fix for Metroid and Zelda. Gamecube will probably outlast the X-box and move into more sirect compitition with the PS2 in the near future.

Nintendo still makes the best games. Wind Waker, Prime, etc. They ain't goin nowhere. And God help us (or what was oyur sparetime) if they get an online network for Kart, Party, Smash Bros, or Tennis going.
Nintendo will live forever on the strength of their first-party software. Sega really only had one big franchise (Sonic) to speak of, and it never really sold systems like Mario and Link. I bought a Gamecube simply on the basis that I won't get to play Zelda or Mario or Metroid anywhere else.
Sure, if you're the sort of person who can't get into a game without tacked-on violence and gore and pixelized tits and other "mature" bullshit, maybe the Gamecube isn't for you. But if you actually give a damn about the games you're playing, and can get over that "kid's game" stigma they've been throwing out since the NES, well...

But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?" -----Phillip J. Fry, Futurama

P.S. the new F Zero will rule too.
And there's rumors Animal Crossing 2 might have online play, too.

The very fact that there was sure to be a Zelda for the cube was the reason I bought it first- even though PS2 had the DVD player, way more games, and was generally more popular.
Maybe I am wrong, but I get the feeling that there are a lot of people out there like me- who remember having Ataris and an NES for the first time, who have grown up and older with Nintendo there pretty much the whole time- Nintendo has always put out great games that did not rely on cheap gimmicks (like the afformentioned by Fuz violence and pixelized tits), so Nintendo is reliable. Sony still feels like the flavor of the week to me- they have had some serious sucess, but I can't think of any title they have that has the potential to achieve the stature of a Mario or Zelda....
Unless NIntendo does something REALLY bad, I think the people in my age group will always buy Nintendo, maybe not first, but definitely enough to keep it comfortably in buisness....
Holy crap, are Pool-Boy and OFB actually *agreeing* on something? Oh wait, this isn't the Politics folder...
Look, the "Nintendo's going out of business" rumor is about as prevalent on the Internet as is the "So-and-so" is signing with WWE" rumors. In fact, the last rumor I heard was that Microsoft (God help us) was in talks to buy Nintendo.
I get the feeling though, that Nintendo doesn't feel the need to win the "next-generation system" wars. They didn't during the N64 phase either. I think they're content to sit in third place, putting out superior first party games once every six months, like in the 8-bit NES days.
Plus, they've got good PR on their side. I mean, when was the last time you heard Senator Lieberman bitching about the content in Nintendo's games? Unlike XBox, which will need the GTA franchise eventually, Nintendo can get by without it, because it's assumed that it's the "family friendly" system. And then they can release a title like BMX XXX to almost no controversy.

I dont think xbox will fail but the playstation stuff will never die. Sony got a good thing goin on.
Microsoft loses money on every single X-box they sell in the states. Microsoft hope is that they will make enough money off software, accesories, and Xbox live to recoup on those losses. Quite simply selling an X-box only gives microsoft the potential to make money. Its everything else that they want you to buy that will paint green over they're red pockets.

Microsoft has enough money that they don't need to make a profit on selling the X-Box or its software and accessories at all. The whole point is for Microsoft not only to toss its hat in to the console industry, but to establish that they can produce a functional set-top box. Just as most people use a computer with a Microsoft OS on it for their computing needs, Microsoft wants the same kind of influence at the television level. They want to provide* you with all your home entertainment needs, and the X-Box is the first step in that plan. Sony is working along the same lines (which is why both consoles have DVD players, and there is talk of using the hard drives in the next gen consoles for TiVo like functions), although since they don't have the cash reserves Microsoft has, they need to be concerned about generating income at this stage. Nintendo is only in it to make video games.

Hiring a computer engineer? I doubt it, but I'm looking.
If I remember correctly, *every* console is priced such that the company makes no money on it. They've always made the majority of their money on software and accessories.

Agreed. I have built up a brand loyalty ever since getting an NES as a child. And I think that their standard titles ARE legitimately good, without resorting to trickery, as Pool-Boy aptly put it.
It's a good system if you don't give a shit about Tom Clancy and some boring military-esque strategy game, or first person shooters. But Playstation has it all over the Cube when it comes to RPGs. And the GTA series is great.

As fun as multiplayer Goldeneye was back in the day, I maintain that no console FPS can possibly come close to a good PC/Mac FPS, if only because of the superior keyboard/mouse controls which most console FPS titles lack.
But anyway, if the Xbox was the product of any other company, it would be dead right now.

Ps2 and Gamecube are now being sold at or close to cost. 199.99 and 149.99 respectively
The X-box is being sold Below cost. In fact if i remember correctly Microsoft loses close to $50.00 on every X-box it sells.
The difference being that instead of lnstead of making instant profit off of every game/accessory sold Microsoft is trying to cover a deficit. Ps2 and Cube both see profit have no deficit to make up and therefore only have to worry about game costs; most of which are taken care of in the form of licensing fees and other forms of indirect revenue.

Oh and does anyone else think Halo 2's delay ties into MS's desire to actually SELL copies of Perfect Dark:Zero?
That model is on their list of fully compatible models: BEFSR41 (v3) 1.04.8, 1.05.00 Those numbers after are the supported firmware versions so make sure you have that up to date. You should be able to get an open NAT with that model no problem.
