Gagne comes to Boston for three prospects, in what's a HUGE deal. A Donnelly, Gagne, Okajima, and Papelbon ensemble is absolutely SICK. No bullpen in baseball comes even close to matching it.
The season is Boston's to lose now.
EDIT: These are the prospects:
In exchange, Boston will send pitcher Kason Gabbard and minor leaguers Engel Beltre and David Murphy to the Rangers.

No Donnelly, as he's Tommy Johnin' it (sports.espn.go.com). Apparently, Theo et al knew he needed the surgery and just held off on saying anything until after the deadline. But still, Delcarmen, Okajima, Gagné, Papelbon? I'd like to metaphorically dip my balls in it.
Originally posted by MercI wonder if this opens the door for Papelbon to be a starter? Gabbard's fantasy value takes a massive hit.
If Schilling is gone after this season, I could see Paps being moved into the starting rotation and the Sox giving Gagne the closers job.
Papelbon is the closer. He wants to close, he's good at closing, let us leave him there instead of bidding on Gagne on the open market for around $10 million a year. Now, if it is Rivera on the open market, I'm interested, but that has almost as much to do with screwing around with the other team than anything else. Other than that, let us be happy that we have a closer. Gagne helps, especially since Delcarmen is unreliable and Timlin is teetering on the edge, but they desperately need a bat, especially if Drew has decided to go into Operation Shut Down because his feelings were hurt that Boston wanted Dye. Now, I know that they mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things, but does anyone have any clue at all with what the Pirates did? Taking Morris for over $11 million between this year and next year and not having the Giants pay any of it? They do realize it is Matt Morris, not Jack Morris, that they acquired?

I think that was mostly a "better save my job by making it look like I'm trying" move. Buy a year with the fans by saying things like

that make it sound like you're trying to rebuild. They probably didn't want to absorb salary, but if you've got room and it's the only way to look like a buyer and not a seller to try to fool your fans, why not?
Besides, since the Cardinals own the Pirates, they kinda get Morris back in this deal, so I can't complain.

The only part I question here is "He wants to close..." Wasn't he the one pushing to move into the rotation? Isn't he only closing because he offered to do what was best for the team with the understanding that he still wanted to be a starter?

In a word: No. Papelbon went to Francona and practically begged to be the closer again. There are no more plans to move him to the rotation; he's going to be the closer around these parts for the next decade.
It should be noted that with a 2-run lead going into the top of the 8th inning and three righthanded batters due up, Francona went to Okajima instead of Gagne. Because good baseball sense AND giving the crowd an excuse to cheer extra loud just aren't important to good ol' Tito.
