Dont know if anybody ever started a thread on this or not, but has anybody else seen this dvd? It is about 3 1/2 hours long and was filmed at various stops on a speaking engagement tour of colleges. He takes questions from the crowd and tells some terrific stories. Best two on the disc were the one where he was speaking about being contracted to write a new superman script, and the other is the story of him shooting a documentary for Prince. PRICELESS storytelling! Plus, plenty of jabs at Ben Affleck. If you like any of the Kevin Smith movies, I highly recommend you check this one out!
I had the opportunity to meet him briefly a few years ago at View Askew's first Vulgar(a)thon. The DVD's a pretty good representation of what kind of speaker he is. He'll make fun of you mercilessly but he'll answer your questions in his wordy, roundabout way. Seemed like a nice enough guy.
It's a great watch, but I wonder if he really tells the truth. I mean, some stories are too incredible. It sounds like he took some truths, some sorta half-truths and makes them into great stories (like the Superman one, and eventually getting in a great punch line about Wild Wild West) On the other hand..Hollywood is a weird place, and who knows. Smith is a great storyteller though. I love how "shocked" he is when the lesbian asks him stuff and he is all like "WOW! A REAL lesbian..can you tell me about that?!"
Just rented and watched this myself, actually. A great and entertaining watch. Made me want to buy all the View Askew DVDs. I've been a fan of his movies for a long time, but haven't purchased the DVDs yet. Always had the intent, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I was on Amazon right after watching the DVD and was THIS close to ordering all five of the "Jersey Trilogy" at once. Anyway, yeah, he's a great speaker and tells great stories. Seems like a Mick Foley type person to hang with. Someone who has seen and been a part of so many things that he could tell interesting stories all night long. The Prince story and the Superman script writing story are classic. And was Jason Mewes totally fucked up or what? Wasn't it shortly after this time period that he was busted for heroin and sent to rehab? He just wasn't totally there at all.
Yeah, she's the "ugly one" according to my friends who saw the movie, but wouldn't just about any woman be the ugly one compared to Elizabeth, Dushku and Larter? That's murderer's row.
I need to give it another watch (also because I didn't take the time to find all the Easter Eggs and watch them) but I do remember that one of my favorite "stories" is how he describes Jason Mewes evolution as an actor.
OH! and the mocking of the drunken frat boys is pretty off the charts great too. Or him protesting the opening of his own movie.... man, I think I need to hit Blockbuster on the way home.
