"After keeping the ECW concept alive and creating an enormous cult-like following for all things ECW from DVD’s to PPV’s to books, we feel that now the time is right to officially launch ECW as its own stand-alone franchise,” said Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman. “RAW, SmackDown and ECW now represent a portfolio of WWE brands for fans of all ages and interests to enjoy.”
The ECW section of the site doesn't use the new logo Paul had in his RAW segment. I kinda like the newer one, but that may be novelty wooing me. The ECW superstar section seems to be the first official word that Taz will move away from SmackDown.

I hope you're not talking about the one that was on the screen behind Paul because that's an OOOOOOOOOOOLD one. Sorry, not old - "classic"

I plead ignorance. It didn't ring any bells with me.
Either way, the question arises: Why use any other logo than the barb-wire font?

Am I the only one here who thinks it's retarded of them to bring back ECW while WCW, which made a whole shit load more money, is dead and buried.
I'm pretty sure Vince will NEVER bring it back, because it was the company that came closest to putting him out of business, but still, ECW over WCW? It just seems wrong to me. I don't really remember the ECW PPVs selling all that well. I don't remember ECW becoming a part of the mainstream where all the money was to be made.
I guess I'm just trying to figure what the big deal is, because I don't see this as all that big of a money making draw. If anything, won't this hurt the existing brands by taking talent away from the pre-existing shows that are hurting to begin with? I'm sure those few people who were ECW fans from before are happy about this, but it's just not a good business decision, in my view.

Honestly, if I have to choose between watching a recorded episode of TNA or a recorded episode of a new ECW, ECW wins out. For now.
If it manages to gets even worse at using their performers, then TNA will come back to my TiVo. I only have so much time to devote to watching wrestling. As it stands now, ECW bumps TNA. That's a business advantage for WWE, by design or not.
I'm no unblinking ECW fan. My hope is that this isn't an exact rerun of ECW's first incarnation. I'd like it to be smarter about storylines. While some angles were stand-outs because of the right performer with teh riught gimmick at the right time, a good chunk of ECW was midcard clubbering with props. For instance, I'm not happy at all about Axl and Balls coming back. They've shown me all their wares already.

There is deffinitely more money to be made with ECW. Not as much as there was to be made with WCW in it's prime, but they kinda already tried that with the Invasion angle. Regardless of whose fault it was that the Invasion tanked, it tanked. Trying it again 5 years later (has it really been that long??) is certainly not the answer. That, combined with the fact that there was really no difference between the styles of WCW vs. WWF (other than one of them was cutting edge while the other was throwing crap at the wall hoping something would catch on, and vice-versa), and the fact that WWF/E spent too much time burying the WCW name both before and during the Invasion angle is why there will be no WCW ressurection.

Could be because ECW fills a niche that the WWE (or WCW for that matter) couldn't while simultaneously acting as a developmental territory? And if you recall, Vince and Co. wanted to relaunch WCW but they couldn't get a TV deal for it and eventually went for the brand split instead.
Also, while ECW never grew their audience anywhere near what WCW attained, it has managed to retain that audience for over 10 years. WCW had hemorraged about 70% of its audience by the time they went under. ECW tv was still getting consistant ratings when it went off the air. As for putting Tazz in the announcer position, I gotta say I'm not really down with that. Announcer Tazz and wrestler Taz are such vastly different quantities. I just don't see announcer Tazz fitting in with ECW. Also, I really like the dynamic he has with Cole (even though I know a lot of people don't care for Cole) and I'd hate to see that team broken up.

Yeah, Axl and Balls sucked majorly. Maybe they should bring back "The Shah" Hack Meyers. I've heard conflicting reports of what ECW is supposed to be all about -- fossils or new developmental guys. If there's too much -- read "any" -- emphasis on fossils, we're in trouble. Guys like Balls were popular 10 years ago because their act seemed fresh and new. In 2006, who's more stale than Balls?
I think they sometimes use the old, old ECW logo because they want to make ECW seem "underground." That thing looks like it was designed by Taz on a Macintosh LC II, and it probably was.
To me, the difference between ECW and WCW is this: WCW was pretty much the same thing as WWF/E was. Relaunching WCW would be just like having a third WWE show after Raw and Smackdown. ECW had a different outlook, a different style, and a different look to it.
Now, I wish the WWE best of luck in restarting ECW, but I don't think I can look at it as "ECW" when the wrestlers are coming down the ramp, from the Smackdown gorilla position.

In addition to the obvious points already made regarding the similar styles of WWE and WCW, you have to also realize that a lot of WCW's big names are current stars and midcarders in present day WWE. Who new would you bring in? Goldberg? Nash? Hogan? If you're going to revive a fed, ECW is the obvious choice.

If only they could wrap barbed wire around the giant fist for the ECW tapings.

With all due respect -- the fed is coming back, so beggars can't be choosers, in my opinion. I'll take what I can get.
