Christ. Truly a black day for the hockey community. Hopefully the world can learn from all this mess and smarten up, especially on the road.

Hell, imagine how Dany Heatley's feeling right now. Torn ACL, out for a long time...and, oh yeah, your friend's gone. A lot of weight on your shoulders.

Rest in peace.

EDIT: The team statement from the Atlanta Thrashers

My Calgary Flames are currently tied for first place overall with a record of 0-0-0-0. It's training camp, but it's a start, right?

Heatley's probably on his way to prison.

A very unfortunate situation that could have easily been avoided.

This does suck. Heatley was gonna be something special. I thought he was the next Lemieux (sp?)

My friend met Heatley in a bar in Boston and said he was a super nice guy, my friend bought him a beer to congratulate him on a good year and Heatley thanked him by giving him free tickets to the game the next night. My friend said he was prolly the nicest athlete he has ever met.

My feeling is that the jailtime will depend on if Snyder's family really want to push the issue. I think the kid will suffer for the rest of his life even if he doesn't go to jail (which I dont think he will, or if he does it will somehow be built in that he does his sentences during the offseason). The sad and haunting thing is that he will wake up every day and realize that someone's child, brother, and husband is dead b/c of him and that is probably punishment enough.

WRONGO!

Craig MacTavish was also involved in an automobile accident and missed the 1984-85 season, due to his being in prison as a result of said accident.

There's a precident, and Georgia's apparantly a notoriously strict state for this kinda thing. It's crappy that this happened, but hopefully people will learn from it.

It's up to the prosecutor if they want to press charges. If they were going for money, the family would have to go for a civil suit, but if he broke the law (especially resulting in a death) the courts don't have to have someone who wants revenge or justice to go after them. What would happen if someone died who didn't have any family? That's why it's "The People vs..." if these things go to trial.

From what I understand in Georgia, they filed charges of vehicular homocide brought against Heatley, with a possible sentance of 3-15 years in prison.

This sucks. RIP

Did they happen to mention details? I checked the NHL, TSN, The Score, ESPN, and the Sporting News, and none of them have reported on any deal being struck.

Did they switch to basla wood recently, because I don't EVER remember seeing so many sticks break in the course of a game. I started counting at the start of the Flames/Wings game here...
