Jim Hendry was fired today after 9 years as Cubs GM.

about time. He's the one who pays Soriano a zillion bucks to strike out everytime and jog to balls in left field. He's the one who over paid Fukedome, Zambrano and a host of others. He's the one who traded Michael Barrett when he had a tussle with Big Z.

About time!

Of course, this means they will probably promote Quadde into the position, given their history of bad decisions.

Later in the day, Rickets said the new GM (who will be from outside the organization.) gets to pick the manager. Quade's not staying.

Michael Barrett got traded later and was kind of bad at that point.

Let's be honest, I just want to quote myself:

I don't believe anything, pro/con on Hendry's status until the end of the season. There's a lot of people with agendas spinning stories, looking for shreds of evidence to prove themselves right and creating the shreds themselves when it suits them.

Nobody knows nothing! It's pretty clear to me that people in the media either grossly misinformed or outright lying the last month. Hope some of them get called out for it. And, as much as I like getting info about what's going on with my team, I do appreciate a team being able to keep things quiet when they need to. No one knowing surely helped them signing the draft picks.

I'm even now OK with the lack of trade movement at the deadline. Yes, they could've traded Pena/Baker/whoever if they wanted to, but they probably would've only gotten C/D level prospects and not saved any money. Instead, they spend the time resources on signing a whole bunch of kids they weren't expected to get. I'd prefer to have both, but I'd rather have the new kids rather than some other team's refuse.

I'm stunned that the Cubs let a fired guy run their team through a) the trade deadline and b) the draft pick-signing deadline.

They wouldn't be the Cubs if they made smart or logical personnel decisions.

But regardless, pending the hiring of a replacement, I have to say it's a net gain for Cubs fans, even though I agree with your sentiment here.

I'm still in shock that this guy, of all guys, was the only GM in Cubs history to head three different playoff teams. I could have sworn I only saw them in 03 and 07. Totally forgot about 08.

Like I said in the Zambrano post, it still is going to take a lot to change the Cubs fortunes. Like getting rid of all of those bad contracts and maybe finally taking a chance on a managerial candidate like homeboy Ryan Sandberg or Bobby V (TV version) if they really want someone with experience. At least this is a start.
