Good job on tying Dean Smith as the winningest College Basketball coach of all time.

Not sure who brought it up on Cold Pizza (I think Skip Bayless), but someone suggested to Tennessee's administrators that they ask her if she'd be willing to coach their men's team.

I'm not saying this as a UConn fan (although I am), but I really think she should. She's obviously had a great career so far (and snaps for tying the record) but I'd like to see how well she can do there. I'm sure she can succeed.

Skip isn't the first one to say it (although I'm sure he thinks he is), I think someone threw this out on College Gamenight this past week too (and was shot down without a thought by the rest.)

The problem for Summit would be the unfair expectations she'd had to live up to; she's probably not going to be as good (at least right away), given Tennessee's Men's team being a long way away from what the Women's Team is.

Even if she has no problem coach guys and guys have no problem playing for a woman - which is highly unlikely and would be used against her by every opposing recruiting coach - that program's still gotta be two to three years from being a consistent top 25 team. Maybe not long in the history of college basketball, but when it's three years of people knocking down what you did in the past and your sport because you're not an instant success, it may feel like forever.

And, for Pat Summit, going to Men's Basketball may be a step down. We tend to think of men's games and more mainstream sports as always more desirable, but if you're arguable the best in your field and enjoy doing it, giving it up to do something else isn't always worth your time.

The problem for Tennessee is you're risking killing the Golden Goose; I don't know the numbers, but I gotta figure Tennessee Women's Basketball might be the rare non-football/basketball sport that's bringing in money instead of just spending it; do you really want to take a chance that the next coach might screw that up?

I believe they've asked her before _ I don't know how seriously _ if she'd be interested when they had an opening. I couldn't see her doing it. I think being the best damn women's coach the game has ever seen (Sorry Geno) is pretty impressive in its own right.

One of the sports talk stations here in Nashville was asking callers if Pat's accomplishment was as big as Dean Smith's (bascially comparing the men's & women's game).

The announcers seemed to lean toward the Dean Smith side of the things in that the men's game seems to have a greater scope of teams that are competitive, whereas the women's game only seems to have a handful of teams realistically vying each year.

I just dont get the logic that somebody's wins are not as "important" as another's because of the gender of player. Does she not have to come up with game plans? Coach? Recruit? just like a man's program? Saying the competition isnt as stiff, shouldnt matter, because, by that theory her own team's arent that good as well. Either way, she has more (well, WILL have more) wins than any other college basketball coach, male or female. That is an accomplishment. And, if the WNBA wasnt a laughing stock and the players she had throughout her career had high profile pro careers, everybody would talk about how great a coach she was, instead on focusing on how great Dean Smith was.

I think it just stems from a lack of knowledge in general about Women's College Basketball. People with just a smattering of interest in the sport could probably name off at least a dozen or more of the Men's teams who are regularly in the Top 25. Ask about the Women's teams? I can name UCONN and Tennesse for sure. Throw in some homer ACC picks because I know we always field a few good teams. After that? Not a clue. Most people know that the Tar Heels are a high-profile program. Those same people probably know that Lady Vols are a similar (or maybe MORE) high-profile team in Women's basketball. But because of the lack of knowledge about the competition, Pat Summit comes off looking like a big fish in a very small pond, and most people don't know enough to be able to tell you if that's a misconception or not.

Personally, 879 wins is HUGE either way. Pat Summit is a great coach who has consistently put out amazing teams year after year.

Even if Summit's record is somehow cheapened because it wasn't in the men's sport, what people seem to forget is she's only 52. She was coaching from the time she turned 21. Chances are that she's got another 10-15 years... and with the seasons that are regularly turned in by her teams, that could be another 300 wins. Whether 879 women's victories is somehow cheapened because they're "women's" victories, 1179 should speak for itself.

Oh yeah - and in getting there, she also passed up Judy Conradt along the way - who had been coaching at Texas when she first started. She's now got about 70 wins on Conradt or so, I think. (I remember Conradt topped 800 after Summit, but I don't remember how long ago that was.)

Oh, and drjay? NOTHING'S saving the men's team. It's just going to suck until eternity.

Personally, I think it is silly to compare men's and women's records in any sport. It's different leagues and really different sports. Summit's record doesn't need to be compared to Smith's record to establish her great accomplishments in the women's game. The fact that she is the clearly the best coach ever in the league that she is in speaks for itself.

I don't consider a comparison between NCAA women's basketball records and NCAA men't baskeball records any more valid than comparing one coach's NFL record to another coach's NBA record. It's just not apples to apples.
