Know what's weird? I'm a life long pro-wrestling fan. I've been watching it pretty much my entire life. I've even begun to get involved with a local promoter to learn a few things about the inner workings of the business and possibly become a referee for his promotion. I post on and read many internet boards (Weinerville being just one of them) about the subject on a daily basis. However, I very rarely get into discussions about the business "in real life".

If I meet somebody at a bar or something and find out they're into wrestling, you'd think that I'd have a great time getting into a discussion with them about it and talk for hours. Not so. In fact, I don't like to talk with people at all about wrestling. It's not so much that I'm embarrassed to be talking in public about one of the most looked down upon forms of entertainment there is, it just doesn't appeal to me to speak at lengths with people about it.

If I meet someone as previously mentioned, I might make a comment about my favorite performer or a recent storyline or something, but that's about it. Football or baseball fans can talk and argue for hours about their sport. People into the same TV show such as "Friends" can talk about Chandler and Monica all night long. But it just doesn't appeal to me to talk about wrestling.

Like I said before, I have no problem going to a message board and posting my opinion on a certain character or storyline and do that pretty much every day. But "in real life" it's completely different. I wonder why that is. Maybe I'm subconciously embarassed about it? I dunno.

Yeah, this post is pretty pointless, but I just wanted to throw this out there to see if anybody is like me in this respect. Does anybody else keep their wrestling fandom to themselves in public?

Absolutely. There are times when people are asking me about wrestling because they know I'm a fan, and when it's revealed that I have a slightly higher knowledge level about the rumors backstage, just general smark stuff, I start to get a little uneasy after awhile, sharing my extensive info. Especially when the "Wow... how do you know all that?" question gets asked.

Even more difficult than that, is telling a prospective girlfriend that you not only watch wrestling, but you're obsessed with it. Damn, one Ex of mine once found a big box of videos in my closet, and looked at me and said "nice porn collection". Then I had the unenviable task of telling her that the hundred plus videos were actually of "Wrestling"...you should have seen her face, it's as if she had rather that it be porn...

Oh well, best to hook up with a girl who watches soap operas religiously. That way she's got her shit, and you've got yours. And never the twains shall meet.

I'm at college, and I go to a friend's room to watch wrestling every Monday and Thursday....and he's in one of my classes, but we never talk about it in class. That's ALL we talk about while watching it though. It's like we're in a different world when we watch wrestling.

I've never thought about this. Weird.....

Better yet, date someone who used to watch GLOW with her dad. Hell, she thought it'd be cool if I trained to be a ref. Yay for career opportunities.

See, I've kinda had the opposite experience. My friends and I talk about wrestling at length. One of our favorite pasttimes is reciting dialogue from stuff like "Beyond the Mat," "Wrestling with Shadows," and anything that Scott Hall said in the "NWO - Back in Black" DVD. Or, jivesoulbro will call me, as he did last week and ask, "So who do you think sells the best stunner?"

Not only that, but occaisionally we'll convert some other friends over to the dark side. Sometimes they don't even know. Like when Lance Storm was trying to get his job back after the Invasion angle and he was telling Flair, "See, I've got charisma..." and then gives the most half-hearted "Woooo" ever. Half of our neighborhood bar "Woooooo"s like that, now.

But then again, it was jivesoulbro who got me back into wrestling in 2000, so maybe that had something to do with it.

It is kinda hard with girls though. Recently, I told a girl who I'm looking to date that I liked wrestling. After learning that I wasn't talking about amateur wrestling, she said, "Do you think it's real?"

Then she said that watching guys in bikini briefs wasn't her thing. I changed the subject.

At least I'm bitching about her over the Internet. That'll show her what she's missing.

There are a few guys I know from message boards that I'll get together with to watch PPVs, but thats about it. I usually avoid the subject all together with everyone else because once I mention that I like wrestling, then I gotta sit through crap like:

  • You dont think it's real do you?

  • How can you watch that fake ass WWF crap?!

  • *Insert horrible Hulk Hogan impression here*

  • Whatever happened to [wrestler who hasnt wrestled in 15 years]? Yeah, I liked it when he was on.

As for admitting that I read about it online? NEVER.

Oh man, when someone says that, you're almost guaranteed to hear Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka invoked.

Or this one guy I know who, whenever the subject of wrestling comes up, will bring up the fucking Von Erics.

"Oh, the Rumble was pretty good? Too bad it didn't have Kevin Von Eric in it!"

"Man, the storylines sure suck right now. They should dig up all the Von Erics!"

I scored tickets to the Royal Rumble, and invited a friend. When I returned to my normal Sunday night routine this past Sunday night (bowling), my friends were like "Where were you last Sunday?" I explained to them that I was at the WWE pay per view at the Wachovia Center. Now, the weekend before that I was at the NFC Championship and I was a hero for having gotten tickets to that. Unfortunately, my friends did not think the same of me after the admission of going to the PPV. I don't know, I think there were a lot of people who did watch wrestling during the heydays of Hogan and Austin and the NWO, but now that it's not hot any more, we go back to being the great unwashed because we still like it and watch it.

Just as a sidenote, there have to be a lot of wrestling fans still out there, because both the Flair and Foley DVD's had to be special ordered at the local video store. We're out there somewhere.

I dont like talking much about wrestling to another person either... the topic always (for me at least) goes into an argument, or just gets plain stupid.

One of my friends always talks about baseball (he is on my high school baseball team) and it gets really annoying..... really fast (even though I was in little league baseball)

Why do I like wrestling? Its fun to watch the storylines and how they turn out, and how far the writers will go to get their paychecks, and because of people like Stone Cold, the Rock (where did he go anyway?) etc.

It's an art form, MAN. How can anyone who is a fan be embarassed?

Of course, the only other person I know who watches or likes wrestling is a friend at work, and when customers are around we kinda lower our voices, but its cuz they just dont get it, DUUUDE!

Like if we were talking about Van Gogh or Machiavelli, you think I'd be proud of that shit? Like if I knew alot about opera, think I'd let thr world know?

It's these faggots who watch Survivor and Real World and The Next Hot Model or some shit, God damn American Idol... or "You Got Setrved"????? #1 movie!!! Dudes, we're normal. They're all queer. JESUS! Almost anyone who watches a WB African-American sitcom, THEY should hide their faces in shame.

I like Wb sitcoms. Just not as much as wrestling.

I don't know where y'all live, but no one asks me if I know it's fake in Toronto. It's pretty much assumed that I know. If someone pulled that on me, I'd probably say: "speaking of fake...about your mother's tits..."

First off, congrats to MonteCarl for lending a hand in the world of indy pro wrestling. Welcome, brother!

As for yours truly...I'm a lot more likely to strike up a conversation with somebody about ACW-NWA WI (sell sell sell) than WWE these days.

Although I'll often insert a wrestling reference into nearly any conversation at home, just to drive my roommates nuts. Which is weird, considering one of 'em used to attend Starrcade back in the day, and the other was watching long before I was. He's still a Doom mark (no, not the video game.)

    Star wipe, and...we're out.

Well, I watch it, and I love it, and I finally got my girlfriend to watch it with me and now she loves it. But, she likes the cruisers and I like the big guys, so we are always bickering about who is best.

Back when I was in the Navy, we used to get NITRO and RAW sent out to us while we were deployed and we would have abot 40 people watching, (the normal for a movie or other TV show was about 10-15) so, the fans ARE there, its just that they percieve a shame about being a fan, so they dont advertise it.

I always feel embarrassed about being a fan when I'm watching wrestling with a non fan and they see signs in the crowd with gross misspellings or grammatical errors. "Get the Tabel" "Your Fired" are two that stick out in my mind.

I have my girlfriend completely hooked. She was totally against it when I first met her, but she came around after being forced to watch it a few times. I always tell her that wrestling brought us together and we'll have our Cory/Topanga slow dance in an empty ring someday.

I think you guys are being a bit tough on the team, Butt Plugs had potential. KIDDING. Actually I think they need to keep Gunn around and put him on Raw. Give him a tag partner, and help out the division some.
