Purdue doesn't have to play either Ohio State or That Team Up North this year, right? So, of *course* by some fluke, they'll wind up in the top three. I think Iowa will be up there too.

So yeah two things I've seen so far this year. Why the hell is Miami getting so much respect out of the gate? I think they'll be decent but christ, national title chances? Whatever. And Michigan isn't getting enough credit I think.

I'm gonna say Georgia wins the SEC, cause Tennessee is not really that great. Florida State wins the ACC cause people are way too quick to discount a team with that much talent and no Chris Rix. USC loses a game during the regular season but still wins their conference. Texas domintes the Big 12.

National title game will be...Texas against some one loss team I think. Probably USC. Texas wins.

FSU's two biggest liabilities this year are inexperience at quarterback and the fact that their best all-around defender (Antonio Cromartie) is out for the year already. They have players in the wing like they always do, but it's a matter of how they congeal and how quickly.

Put it this way: I can see them winning out in the ACC but the game versus Miami due to the inexperience of both QBs is a complete toss-up that may come down the team that makes the last major mistake loses.

Plus you guys lucked out by not having VT on the schedule again, and a lot of fans here that I know are wary of any trips to Blacksburg. As they should be. Although FSU might have to play them in Jacksonville, probably depending who wins between them and UM in November.

Miami is one of those teams that just seems to reload no matter how many key players they lose; however, I think Pitt and Louisville could give Miami a run for the money in the Big East. And I'd take BC in the ACC this year over Florida State because Jeff Bowden wasn't fired and they're breaking in a new QB. I guess everybody's on the bandwagon (or sadly punned, Trojan Horse) for USC in the Pac 10?

I'm not naive enough to go with the homer pick in the Big Ten. All I ask of you, Good Saint Joe, is that we actually have plays - PLURAL - for our newfound playmakers. And not the same 4 plays that we had last year. Not the plays that everybody in the stadium, with the exception of our offense, knew before the ball was snapped. And I'll take Iowa to win the Big Ten, especially since they did as well as they did last year with as many injuries as they had.

Miami's in the ACC, too, since last year.

Also, I'll take USC, you can have the field.

As to FSU I'm not really worried about Cromartie. I don't see it as a huge loss, even though he really is a great player. In my view, especially in college football for teams like FSU, Miami, USC and such, DB's are easy to replace. They've got more than enough great athletes to fill that void. Hell FSU lost both starting corners before the season in 93 and that year worked out ok. No I'm not saying they have a shot at the national title again, just that if you're going to lose a player, that's where it can hurt the least I think. The rest of the D is good enough to make up for it.

As to Boston College, um right.

I think people are mistaken about USC. They don't really have any more talent than say Miami or Texas. Their coaching has put them where they are at for the most part, plus a little luck and an easy schedule. Yeah they are pretty great, but I just don't see them going another year without a loss. And I really think Texas looks special.

Then I'm definitely taking Pitt in the Big East this year! The sad thing is, I was looking right at the conference lists on ESPN.

I don't want the rest of the field just yet; I've still got one foot on the 'USC-will-threepeat' bandwagon. Their offense was just amazing last year, and it'll be interesting to see how they do with all that experience but a new, young OC.

I just hope Penn State and/or State Penn gets recognized in the first Famous Fifteen of the year! :)

If you mean FSU's pass rush, than yeah.

You know what that game was last night? That was every field goal joke made over the last 14 years come home to roost. Also, I knew it was going to be ugly last night, but I had no idea how ugly. But you can't turn over the ball twice, havea punt blocked, commit dumb penalties, give up 9 sacks and mishandle 3 FG snaps and expect to win a football game.

Well, OSU put the spanking on Miami (OH), a good tune-up to get the team ready for the Texas showdown. I was surpurised to see Michigan having a bit of a time with Northern Illinois. Very surprised to see OU go down to TCU this weekend. Disappointed to see such an ugly game last night.

So next week ought to have some great football games - go OSU and Notre Dame!

Maybe it is just a sign of getting old, but I do remember Bobby Bowden's FSU teams playing innovative football. Now, they make Woody Hayes' Ohio State offense seem like an AFL team. For good weather conditions, that was one of the worst QB displays I've seen in a long time.

Bah. My hatred for Notre Dame FAR outweighs my hatred for That Team Up North. So go-ugh-Wolverines!

Well, Jeff still can't do a damn thing and that blows. They need someone who can coach a QB and fast. There's no way they can keep signing the top QB's in the country and they all just happen to suck. Nope, I don't care that they are young, these guys should be at least competent and they didn't look it last night. Jeff Bowden can die a horrible, painful death and I shall laugh and pee on his grave.

But anyway two other things:

FSU's offense will get better. I think Lee has some pure talent and if he can get his head on straight he'll take the job and run with it. Luckily they get to play The Citadel this weekend before facing BC. Weatherford ...I don't know. They obviously didn't trust him to throw anything long, and when he did try you could see why. But he also did a decent job of throwing away the ball a couple times to avoid a bad play. I keep reminding myself that Charlie Ward sucked HUGE ass his first half season too, but it's not that comforting at the moment. Oh and give Booker the damn ball more, pretty please.

Miami is getting too much credit in this thing. People are too quick to talk up their QB when in fact every Miami QB leads drives against FSU in the second half, even Brock Berlin. He may turn out really good, but it's way too early for so many sportswriters to be giving him the verbal blowjob. Luckily for Miami and FSU their biggest rival in the ACC, Virginia Tech, has a new QB too and he looked ok but not great either.

Oh, and third: FSU's new secret weapon = send in Deion to screw with the best players head. WHOOOO.

If I had the power, I would trade you, straight up, Jay Paterno for Jeff Bowden. Jay doesn't even need to be named offensive coordinator to call plays. I'll even throw in the guidebook to all 6 plays from last year. PSU QB's don't suck when they're recruited; they just actually regress from freshman to senior year.

The defenses of Miami and FSU were extremely impressive on Monday night. I know they've both sent hoards of defensive superstars to the pros but both universities still conjure up images of blistering offenses. It was actually quite a fun game to watch, and if either team gets an offense going, they would be even more fun to watch.

So I've been developing a theory on poll rankings and why teams drop the way they do. This is all I have so far:

Generally speaking, after a loss the drop is about 5-7 slots, unless they were a preseason favorite, then they lose 4 for the first loss, 9 for the second loss. If they're not a preseason favorite, 8-10 for the second loss. Mid-major teams lose 8-10 per loss, and unless they're already in the Top 25, need minimum 5 wins and/or national/network hype to get ranked. In addition, add 1 in for a loss to an unranked team and 2 for a home loss.

So far, it's worked pretty accurately to describe the rankings this season. Any thoughts or suggestions on it?

Sort of takes some of the luster off the Notre Dame win. Also makes a person appreciate that Jimmy Johnson must have been a coaching genius to win championships in college and the NFL with the human disaster area Dave Wannestadt on his staff. That's probably a fair assessment. Polls really suck because of the way they're done. If two teams finish first and second in the poll at 11-1, but one team lost in the last week and one lost in the first, it's almost impossible for the team that lost later to finish ahead of the team that lost earlier. That said, I'm still not really in favor of a playoff to determine the nat'l champ, but that is a different issue.

ND beat Michigan today so they still look like a contender.

Poll rankings shouldn't start until at least six weeks into the season at least the kind that have anything to do with the BCS.

Pre-season rankings are the biggest joke in the universe and yet they still affect the National Title outcome? Such bullshit.
