I definitely think that the biggest threat to steal Billy away from Florida is the NBA. Of course, he may take the time to talk to John Calipari, Rick Pitino, and Tim Floyd first and decide to stay in Florida. Lon Kruger has been sort of quiet in Atlanta as well (and I think he is a great coach), but Atlanta doesn't have grand expectations, so he may stay out of the fire a little longer.

College coaches are having an increasingly tougher time of making the transformation to the NBA. Much has been said of "why?", but it usually comes down to the pro players being harder to deal with, motivate and discipline.

If I looked into a crystal ball, I'd guess that Billy would win an NCAA title at Florida, go to the NBA for a few seasons, get tired of the NBA and go back to college. If that happens, whichever school was lucky enough to land him after the NBA would probably be his last stop. Pitino will likely retire from Louisville, Floyd will likely land a good job (if any become open this year), and Calipari will have another stop after Memphis (unless he resurrects Memphis into the "elite" category).

As someone who prefers college ball over pro ball, it is a shame that you have to lose the good coaches for a few years before you get them back.

Donovan would be a perfect fit for the pros, since paying your players is actually LEGAL in the NBA...

(To borrow a line from DJ FF...)

~WHAMMO!!!

Joking of course, Quezzy. All Vandy fans have to brag about is our clean record and top notch graduation rates. It's really not as much fun as it sounds...I actually really like the Bonner kid over there. His shot looks funny but it seems to go in about 60% of the time. I also really like that dunking freshman (James White??) over there. He got pretty nasty in our gym on a breakaway.

Edit: Geez, that html crap took me a good half hour to figure out...can anybody tell me how to change font size?? I'm not really all that bright when it comes to this stuff.

Another Bluegrass State Representative . . .

I will just chime in at random on some of the topics being discussed:

Florida's next coach (if daKid decides to leave) is already on their bench. Surely after a few years under him, John Pelphrey will be ready to be the head coach?

Of course, maybe Tubby gets fed up with what's going on at UK and he ends up coaching UK instead.

As far as Bogans skipping classes. He might not be there, but I would wager that he is doing the work and taking the tests himself. Most althletes (especially b-ball players at UK) get the notes for the class typed up and given to them. They also sometimes take their tests at different times from everyone else because of practice schedules, games, etc. It's not all that unusual. Of course, that does leave the door wide open to cheating. I'm just saying that because he doesn't show up all that much doesn't mean he's not doing the work.

Honestly, I've only watched about half of the UK games this year partly because of other things going on, and partly because I haven't been as interested. I knew that I could not put up with the indignity of losing to TN twice in b-ball after having to endure the f-ball pounding each year. That would have been too much to take.

Hate that opera house they have to play in at Vandy. Best thing about that is it's kind of close to the Great Escape (comic shop) in Nashville.

Ffej - NKU eh? Your Norse were very good in the late 90's but at least my Knights (Bellarmine) were good in the late 80's early 90's when I was in school. Best thing about NKU back then was when Svoboda(sp?) finished up at UK and ended up on the team.

I'm sure I'll get more excited about UK in the next few weeks and look forward to my days off of work to watch the NCAA tourney. (Love those 1st two days!!!!)

That's the thing about Memorial Gym...Vandy fans love it, everybody else hates it. Sports Illustrated voted it best home gym in America a few years back. Dale Brown used to bitch about the place every single time he came here. The benches in the endzones, the elevated playing surface, and the overall "antique" feel, make it extremely unique. The acoustics in the place can make 12,000 fans sound like 30,000. The fact remains that it's a great home gym, that (usually) gives us a great home court advantage. One things for sure, it's 10x better than that cavernous "arena" 180 miles to the east with about 12,000 fans a game disguised as orange, empty seats. (Am I making my anti-UT attitude too obvious??)

Well Tubby may have have thrown dirt on his grave:

http://espn.go.com/ncb/news/2002/0222/1338588.html

Word around Lexington is that Fitch will be, if not already, kicked off the team. This is the second time in a week he has gotten in trouble. Its a shame to, because the kid always gives it everything he has got on the court. He and Prince seem to be the only two that cared this year.

The other word around Lexington is that the University is very very unhappy about the apparent lack of control Tubby has on his players. This is the fourth incident this year and could be second player kicked off the team and one player that left. After the blow the football team received University officials (see Weatherington) are supposedly irate at Smith. WKYT in Lexington this morning quoted a high ranking official in the Athletic office as saying "This stuff didn't happen when Rick was here." Ouch.

Mark my word, if UK loses early in NCAA's and SEC Tounrament- Tubby is gone. And I for one hope John Pelphry is our next Coach. I don't think Donovan will leave Florida. We need someone who has played here, and like Pitino, understands what it means to see "Kentucky" across the front of your jersey.

Yo DrewDewce, TODD SVOBODA FOREVER!!! Yeah the Norse rocked the party in the early 90's. They got a lot of cast offs that Cincy and Xavier and didn't want from Cincinnati. They are still good, but a lot of those guys go to MAC schools now like Akron, Toledo, and Marshall and get out of the 'Nati for some reason.

If I lived back in the wild west days, instead of carrying a six-gun in my holster, I'd carry a soldering iron. That way, if some smart-aleck cowboy said something like "Hey, look. He's carrying a soldering iron!" and started laughing, and everybody else started laughing, I could just say, "That's right, it's a soldering iron. The soldering iron of justice." Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink.

Well..... congratulations Mr. ChuckC.

Team Turmoil. I don't know if UK is the best bad team or the worst good team. Luckily I was teaching last night and didn't have to endure the game, but according to ESPN.com
Vandy just ruled.

How many days until next season starts?

Wow! It's been 9 years, but we FINALLY beat Kentucky!! I've been a season ticket holder for eight years, and had never seen it happen...What a perfect night. I know you guys (Russell, DrewDeuce) know the feeling of your fans wanting a coach fired one week, then the next week he's a coaching God all the sudden. That's what Kevin Stallings has been through in the span of two short weeks. I couldn't be happier for the man, cause he's definitely the guy that is going to take this program to a higher level...What about Tubby?? Is he canned?? Who's on all the UK fans wishlists (I KNOW there's some lists out there)

By the way, the (many) UK fans that made the trip down were very classy and very (how do I put this...)un-redneck-ish, if you know what I mean...That was quite a refreshing change after my trip to (ob)Knox(ios)ville last Saturday.

Vandy 67 Vawls 62
Vandy 86 Cats 73

Please don't take that as a flame...but this has been just a perfect week to say the least, and it will be a while before I can claim wins over ut and UK in the same week again. We finish up in Fayetville(sp?) on Saturday...What a mess it is over there...

I don't know about Tubby. I've heard he is under fire. Not so much for the losses, but for the shenanigans that are going on within the program. After the NCAA neutered the football team (banning UK football from a bowl game is the least necessary act known to man) and cited "lack of institutional control", I think that Larry Ivy (AD) is probably on the chopping block.

If Tubby departs..... I don't know what my "wish list" would be. Many will say Billy Donovan; some will say (former UK great and NBA mediocre) Kyle Macy (who is now coaching at either Morehead or Eastern Kentucky); a few will say (former Wildcat) Travis Ford (who is coaching at the one of Morehead or Eastern that Macy isn't coaching); many will say (former Wildcat) John Pelphrey (still assisting Donovan at Florida I think). Big trend of the former 'Cats. As long as it isn't Lute Olson, Bobby Knight, Jerry Tarkanian, Dale Brown, Kevin O'Neal or Eddie Sutton I don't have a firm opinion yet.

Damnedest thing is ... on ESPN.com they had the Vegas odds for winning the NCAA tourney and UK is the #4 favorite at 5-1 odds. Bookmakers are basicly projecting the team as a Final 4 candidate and fans are worried? We (UK fans) are spoiled.

Arkansas?

Nolan has his points. He has been great with Arkansas basketball (although I sort of think that Eddie "Bourbon" Sutton laid a lot of that foundation). He does deserve a "down year", but frankly, Arkansas hasn't been overly menacing in quite a few years. BUT, I've never heard about bad things in the Arkansas program and I think Nolan carries himself well, so I hope he sticks it out. BUT, getting reamed by the media is part of the job; if the attacks are racially motivated, I agree with Nolan; BUT, if they're motivated by lackluster play, etc. he just needs to deal with it.

LOL, but man, I SO feel your pain...18 years and counting of bowless football in Nashville. If it could only be basketball season for longer than 4 months....actually its usually only 3 months for us :-) But like I said before, we'll be back in the postseason (not the NIT) by next year...That was a bunch of freshman and sophomores out there last night if you noticed!

Seriously, congrats to Vandy. They just flat out outplayed the Cats, and glad to hear that the UK fans there were classy about it too.

I've been on some road football games where I certainly couldn't say the same about the host team's fans (including a memorable cold day in Nashville when we watched one of Bill Curry's squads do nothing against an equally inept Vandy team). Of course, that paled in comparison to Vols fans and Gators fans cheering when Tim Couch went down with an apparent injury in Gainesville a few years back. If I didn't look so meanacing, I might have gotten in a few fights that day, but usually know one wants to find out how much of a wimp I really am. :-)

As the 'Taker might say, I'm the phony tough and the crazy brave.

I think Tubby is in trouble. All the off the court stuff and now the Vandy loss. Mad props to Vandy for a crushing defeat. I don't see how anyone wins down there where the floor is 10 feet off the ground and sidelines are in the end zone areas. But its the second coolest arena in basketball (Cameron will always be first because the students practically fill one whole side of the lower arena and are LOUD as heck).

Uk wish list, Pitino is on top. But Rick won't leave Louisville after the small minded UK fans made Rick feel like his life was in danger by going to Louisville. Billy Donovan is next on that list, but I don't think he would leave Florida for UK. Mike Davis at Indiana name has been thrown about down here. So has Henry Bibby at USC.

If you are going for little or no head coaching experience John Pelphry has to be above Macy (who is at Morehead State) and Travis Ford (who is at EKU). Winston Bennett is a UK alumn and excellent assistant as well. But Pelphry longs to be back home and its his dream to coach UK. I am biased too, because Pelphry is from Paintsville, KY which is just down the road from me. My high school is in the same district as Paintsville so I got to see him play when he was in high school.

But you know what the problem with UK is? They have no emotional leader. They have no kid who is PROUD of wearing Blue and White. Tubby does not instill the UK mystique in his players. All our national champions had a difference maker that dreamed or LOVED to look down see "Kentucky" across their jerseys. Those guys are infectious(sp?)in the locker room. Gone are the Cameron Mills, the Jeff Sheppards, Jeff Brassows, Anthony Epps, Leroy Birds, Reggie Hansons, Rex Chapmans, Travis Fords, and Kyle Macys. Those guys KNEW what it meant to play in Rupp Arena. They respected those championship banners and held those uniforms in reverence. It meant something for them to be a Wildcat. Jeff Sheppard said the first time he stepped in the basketball museum he cried for 20 minutes. Playing for UK and being a part of the school and its legacy meant that much to him. All UK has now are some McDonalds All Americans looking to get on ESPN and in the NBA (see Keith Bogans).

Look at Duke. Duke is chopped full of the same talent UK has, but their Coach teaches them what it means to play at Duke. They walk into Duke feeling PRIVILEDGED to play at Duke. UK kids now think UK should feel priviledged to have them! Thats not how it works. That doesn't win National Titles. Tubby doesn't bring that to the table and its time for him to go and get someone in here who cares about the University. End of story.

Off the soapbox.

Being an Alabama student, I might as well place my 2 cents into this. Alabama is good, better than what the media says they are (which is little to none). This is especially the case with Dick Vitale, who probably crapped in his pants when he saw Vandy upset his beloved Wildcats. He refuses to admit Alabama is any good, even though they won the conference championship and beat every team in the SEC (6-0 against the SEC East including wins at Georgia and at Kentucky).

It comes to down to which team is the most consistent down the stretch? All it takes to win the national championship is winning 6 games in a row. While no small feat, a team that is consistent at the end should have the best shot of winning it all.

I'm praying it's Bama, if not I think Kansas has too much depth to be beat. But anything could happen.

Actually I'm more impressed with Alabama beating Florida at home than them beating Georgia or Kentucky on the road. Florida is better on the road this year than at home, and are probably the best team in the East. And wasn't Alabama pretty bad at home recently until this year? Alabama should probably be a one seed after Kansas, Maryland, and I guess Duke. But Oklahoma or Cincinnati will probably get it.

As for the Wildcats, the odd makers have them as the fourth most probable team to win the National Championship? Wow. I'd say they're probably the fourth best team in the SEC alone. Tayshaun Prince hasn't really carried Kentucky on his back like he has in the past years. Same for Udonis Haslem and Brett Nelson at Florida. To me that's why teams like Georgia and Alabama are playing just as good (in Georgia's case) and better than them (in Alabama's case) is because they have players they can rely on down the stretch. Which is why Jarvis Hayes and Erwin Dudley should be the two favorites to win SEC Player of the Year.

I also think Kansas has the best chance to win it all, they have been unstoppable towards the end of the season.

UAsnake,

Good to hear from a 'Bama fan. I love the campus in Tuscaloosa and wish I could see a b-ball game down there some time. A friend of mine went to law school there and I've seen a UK/Tide football game. I must say that 'Bama fans were much more accomodating and nicer than FL or TN fans. . .

I agree that Alabama is VERY talented, and I hope they do well in the tourney (unless they meet up with UK, of course). They've also got a great coach. He did an awesome job when he was with Murray State here in KY (who is already in the tourney by winning the OVC tournament this past weekend). Hopefully WKU will make it too. Hell, Louisville might even make it after shocking Cincy and getting some revenge against UNC-Charlotte this weekend (not that I'm rooting for THAT one - I think the committee would try too much to match UK and UL up again, and I doubt UK would want to play UL or Indiana again, for that matter).
