The White Sox traded Carlos Lee to the Brewers for Scott Podsednik, Luis Vizcaino, and a PTBNL. As a die hard Brewer fan, I just about peed my pants when I heard this. The Brewers actually taking on salary and acquiring an impact player? With the additions Lee and Damian Miller, the Brewers actually have a legitimate lineup. I love Doug Melvin.
They're also on the verge of getting Marlon Byrd from the Phillies for Jeff Bennett... I must say that I've been impressed by Melvin's moves the past couple of years. The first year he traded Sexson for quantity, now he's trading some spare parts for some quality. Even with the losses of Kolb, Vizcaino, Podsednik, etc. they still have enough young talent to make some noise in the NL Central... a rotation headed up by Ben Sheets and then followed by some surprisingly effective starting pitching in Davis and Santos could be good enough to get them to .500. Not to mention the fact that they have plenty of talent on the farm coming up... Hardy, Krynzel, Fielder, etc.
I hate seeing Lee go, but am excited about picking up Podsednik. Nice to see that the White Sox are gonna be even somewhat active this offseason, and making some moves that actually mean shit.
I think it looks like Ozzie is focused on improving the bullpen, and trying to get us to manufacture runs, instead of relying on power all of the time. I've heard rumors about the Sox going after Vasquez, and possibly getting rid of Konerko. So it's not over yet.
I do not like the idea of giving up Konerko and Lee in the same offseason. Esp. with Thomas not back until June. You lose Konerko you have a lineup of 1B Gload 2B Harris 3B Crede SS Uribe RF Dye CF Rowand LF Podsednik C Davis DH Everett
That team might never score a run. Ever. Seriously, I'm all for getting some speed on the basepaths but at some point you do need someone with some power. They need to go after a front-line legit #1 or #2 starter somehow now, preferably without giving up Garland, as then we get a rotation of Buehrle New Guy Garcia Contreras Garland

I'll take Garland as a #5 starter.
But, would you be willing to dump Garland and Podsednik if you got Javier Vasquez in return, as the other guys would be then shipped by the Yankees in a 3-way for Johnson. Unless they end up getting a guy like Vasquez in all of this, the White Sox are crazy getting rid of Lee. Getting him out of New York probably allows Vasquez to return to the solid 15 win a year #2 guy he would have been in Montreal if they had an offense around him. However, I would like to thank the White Sox for trading him out of the American League, as he was a guy who destroyed Red Sox pitching.
Vazquez=overrated with one nice year. I would trade Garland for Vazquez straight up, as losing Judy G. wouldn't bother me, but I'm not paying a premium for one good year anymore than I would pay a lot to get Esteban Loaiza back.

The Selig regime traded one big name (Ritchie Sexon) for a bunch of players...and it almost sort of worked out.
This one traded a bunch of players for one guy.
We'll see, but for some reason I ain't optimistic. I'll still go to a game or 2 at Miller Park, but I dunno...
Star wipe, and...we're out. Thrillin' ain't easy.

Carlos Lee is better than Podsednik in just about every measureable offensive stat. Depending on your view of Luis Vizcaino, the Brewers did very well on this.
