Well, the Flames re-signed defenseman Denis Gauthier to a 2-year contract today with the figures estimated to be around $3 million over the two years. With Jordan Leopold expected to sign sometime in the next few weeks, the Flames will have 8 NHL-caliber blueliners:
Mike Commodore [24; 6'4", 230 Lbs; 7 pts in 75 GP, $515K] Denis Gauthier [27; 6'2", 224 Lbs; 58 pts in 384 GP, $1.6M] Jordan Leopold [24; 6'1", 205 Lbs; 47 pts in 140 GP, ~$1.6M] Steve Montador [24; 6'0", 200 Lbs; 8 pts in 87 GP, $425K] Andrew Ference [25; 5'10", 196 Lbs; 56 pts in 251 GP, $625K] Robyn Regehr [24; 6'2", 225 Lbs; 54 pts in 363 GP, $1.75M] Toni Lydman [26; 6'1", 204 Lbs; 93 pts in 287 GP, $2.4M] Rhett Warrener [28; 6'2", 215 Lbs; 86 pts in 560 GP, $2.2M]
Under the current NHL CBA, all of the above 8 D-men have to clear waivers before they can be sent to the minors...and odds are that none of them will. Add in hotshot prospects Dion Phaneuf & Tim Ramholt, and the blueline is pretty crowded! So, expect a Flames blueliner to be heading elsewhere soon. Problem is, nobody knows which one it'll be...and Darryl Sutter's basically said in press coverage that each & every one of the defense corps are part of his long-term plan. The hell?
