I'm thinking about getting a 360 in a few weeks, and seeing as this is really the first time I've even considered getting one, I was hoping to get the opinion of some 360 owners on what I should look for.
What I'm already planning on getting:
360 with 20GB HD and wireless controllers Dead Rising NCAA 2008 Madden 2008 Viva Pinata
I already have Smackdown vs RAW and Guitar Hero for the PS2 and Oblivion on my PC. I've heard good things about Gears of War, but I'm not really super high on online shooters. Are any of the basketball games any good?
I've also heard about a lot of mechanical failures on the 360, anybody have any advice on that?

I'm the same way when it comes to on-line shooters. Not a big fan. However I really enjoyed Gears of War. I don't play it on-line in a Vs. mode at all though, just story mode. Gears was the first game that I actually had a desire to go through and beat each difficulty level. Now I am currently doing the same thing but on an on-line Co-op story mode with my cousin. I can't say enough great things about that game. Rent it and check it out. (Disclaimer..The game is kinda short but has provided me with hours of entertainment)
Careful with Dead Rising. It's fun, but that stupid overall game time limit can be annoying as hell with only one save point. Too much temptation to just screw around and have fun, and then several hours later you figure out you can't win and have to restart.
Budget in some money for add-ons and Arcade games, cause if you're like me you'll end up spending too much on that stuff. It's not like the Wii where you enter your card every time to buy points. Your card is saved and you can buy stuff with a few clicks. Prince of Persia and Castlevania:SotN highly recommended.
I've been playing Crackdown a lot, but it's probably more a rental. Supercop game and you can jump forever, blow everything up and roam a city GTA style. Little too easy to beat though.
Gears is pretty great so at least rent it. Just amazingly well crafted for any game, much less a shooter.
I don't play basketball games but check IGN or gamespot.com for reviews. Think I remember seeing a positive one in there somewhere.
I'll check out Gears of War then. Not sure how much I'll get into the Live Arcade thing. I haven't ever bought anything of the Virtual Console yet, so I'm not sure what XBox live will have to entice me.
I haven't found anything about any really good RPGs for the 360, so I'm guessing there aren't any?

Keep it in a well ventilated area. They seem to have a pretty high failure rate, so keep the phone number for customer service handy.
as far as RPGs go, Blue Dragon looks to be pretty good! But as far as anything else goes, the only thing I can think of is FFXI and Phantasy Star Universe. And Trusty Bell.
I have to agree with Phantasy Universe as a good RPG, actually it's the only good XBox 360 game I've played at all so far. That's mainly because I haven't played many of the highly rated games so far though because Gamefly doesn't have in like any of the top thirty games on my queue.
