Word on the street (or, in another, more accurate, way, Yahoo Sports) says that a trade has been worked out between the Jags and the Skins, but it's on hold since teams can't officially make deals until March.
The unusual part is that the deal was made because Coach Gibbs wants a veteran QB to act as a backup for Patrick Ramsey. Frankly, I'd rather have Brunell as the starter and the horribly inconsistent Ramsey carrying the clipboard, but that's just me.

This deal strikes me as odd for 2 reasons. 1) I thought I had read somewhere that Brunell didn't want to go anywhere to be a veteran backup QB or even compete for a starting job. That's why he wasn't expected to go to Tampa Bay if offered. 2) I thought Ramsey was a pretty good QB, he just spent 3/4s of the game on his back or with a defensive lineman in his face. With a better offensive line, I think he would be very good. Who knows though, Gibbs is the "genius". Or so I hear every day around here...
I think the best place for Brunell to be a veteran backup is Detroit or Houston; both of them have very good, young quarterbacks who just need guidance (and a good team around them).
If Brunell's going to start, it should be with a team with absolutely nothing going for them in the QB position, like Miami.
This seems like an odd fit for both sides. I saw Brunell going to a place like Oakland myself. I still think Ramsey has what it takes to be a starter, he just needs an actual system to play in. Hasslebeck proved himself a worthy backup so I don't know why Brunell is eyeing Washington and Washington him.
The last thing the evil Raiders need is another player in the twilight of their career. I expect them to get into the Drew Henson sweepstakes, unless they decide to take Roethlisberger(assuming the Chargers take Manning). I've heard that they're interested in taking Fitzgerald at number two, but they've got to have someone to get the ball to him and Porter on down the line, and they've still got the "problem" of having Tim Brown and Jerry Rice blocking the path for at least one more season. Gannon probably only has a year left in him, although people have been saying that about him for years now. He just looked scared last year, and couldn't avoid the rush like he could in years previous.

All the pundits say San Diego is taking Eli Manning first. I don't blame them, Brees may be a good quarterback, but they already got burned taking someone else over a Manning- they won't make that mistake again. And lets face it Eli Manning is already better than Drew Brees. San Diego then can trade Brees for more picks or some defensive players.

The Colts took Manning #1, leaving Leaf for the Chargers at #2. The didn't Leaf "over Manning".
I wonder if taking Eli would give the a better QB/RB combo with Eli + LT than they would have with Vick + (say) Steven Jackson. Probably so.

You know I thought Manning went number one but On Mike and Mike the other day Kiper was talking like Leaf was #1 which confused me. For fun I went back and looked at the first round of the '98 Draft- what a first round that was!
The only two bad picks I see were Andre Wadsworth to Arizona with the third pick and Curtis Enis to the Bears with the fifth pick. Not a lot busts in that first round.

It's being reported that the Redskins are offering the Jags a third round draft pick for Brunell, who would then get a $20 million, 3 year deal (jacksonville.com) and an $8 million signing bonus.

Ramsey Frustrated With Redskins

Washington Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey expressed his frustration to the team yesterday about the possibility of Mark Brunell replacing him as a starter for the 2004 season, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.
The Redskins are trying to acquire Brunell, a three-time Pro Bowler, through a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Washington Coach Joe Gibbs met with Brunell in the Jacksonville area Monday night and gave him assurances that he would at least compete for the starting job, according to a source close to Brunell.
Redskins officials and Brunell's representatives described the get-together in positive terms. According to a source close to Brunell, a significant hurdle was cleared when the quarterback was told by Gibbs he would have a chance to be the starter.
Ramsey used an intermediary -- believed to be agent Jimmy Sexton -- to express his concerns about the team's courtship of Brunell to Redskins owner Daniel Snyder in a telephone conversation yesterday, another source said. Ramsey, who will be entering his third NFL season, thought that the starting job was his to lose after earning it late in 2002. He was the undisputed starter for the Redskins in 2003 until he was injured late in the season.
Gibbs's meeting with Brunell has sparked inquiries from NFL teams about Ramsey's availability in a trade. According to a league source last night, the Miami Dolphins have offered their first-round pick (No. 20 overall) for the quarterback. But at Redskins Park yesterday, Gibbs said Ramsey would remain with the Redskins.
"We think Ramsey has a great future," Gibbs said. "He's not going anywhere. He knows that, too."
Even so, Gibbs was adamant that he will be reviewing the performance of all the Redskins -- including starters -- as he seeks to turn the team around.
"Listen, everybody on the team is going to have to compete for starting jobs," said Gibbs, who plans to start going around the country next week to speak to impending free agents and current Redskins players. "The good thing about it is we have a new coaching staff, and I think most of the players here expect it."
Ramsey, who was at Redskins Park early yesterday, did not return a phone call. Sexton could not be reached to comment. Redskins spokesman Karl Swanson declined to comment except to describe the reports about Ramsey as rumors.
Several teams, particularly the Dallas Cowboys, Dolphins and San Diego Chargers, have experienced an interest in Brunell, keeping the Redskins on hold in their effort to work out a trade.
Among Redskins starters, Ramsey's situation is the most conspicuous, but Gibbs is expected to revamp the team's roster. After evaluating film, Gibbs is said to believe that some of last year's reserves will become starters in the 2004 season.
Former coach Steve Spurrier's staff gave Ramsey a B+, one of the highest grades, on the roster last season, after factoring in his foot ailment (bone bruise) and Spurrier's reluctance to use maximum pass protection -- a decision that led Ramsey to be frequently sacked and hurried during pass plays. According to Redskins sources, Gibbs is genuine in his praise of Ramsey, whom the coach described as strong-armed, smart and tough.
But Gibbs appears to be more comfortable with a veteran quarterback such as Brunell. Gibbs allowed Ramsey to be part of the new coaching staff's quarterback evaluation sessions. Gibbs has held long discussions with Ramsey, informing him that the quarterback corps had to be bolstered with a veteran. But Ramsey initially didn't realize that the veteran would be his potential replacement.
According to a source, Gibbs informed Ramsey on Friday that the coach would be meeting with a veteran quarterback, but did not identify the quarterback. Ramsey was surprised to find out over the weekend that it was Brunell, who has the ninth-best quarterback rating in NFL history but has lost his starting job. On Monday, the Redskins informed Ramsey that Brunell would receive an opportunity to compete for the starting job if he is acquired in a trade.
Ideally for the Redskins, if Brunell won the job, he would groom Ramsey to become his eventual replacement. But in a worst-case scenario for the team, Ramsey could seek a trade.
Ramsey has three years remaining on a five-year, $5.7 million contract, which includes incentives that are maximized if he remains the starter. The clauses were a major issue in a 2002 training camp holdout that nearly led to him being traded.
In Monday's meeting near Jacksonville, Gibbs had a wide-ranging discussion with Brunell about his possible role with the Redskins.
"We covered just about everything we could," Brunell told the Florida Times-Union. "I was impressed. He's quite a man."
The meeting had a bizarre start after Brunell picked up Gibbs from St. Augustine Airport. Gibbs immediately told Brunell that they would have to visit a hospital to get his blood sugar checked. Gibbs, who suffers from diabetes, had accidentally switched his medication, causing him to take the wrong dosage.
"That was just me being stupid," Gibbs said yesterday. "I had the two vials and I switched one around. It was just a precautionary thing. There was nothing wrong."

I'd be pretty pissed if I was Ramsey. It's not his fault Spurrier refused to protect him, and Ramsey still got up and played until he was finally injured. He's one tough QB, and I think more than a few teams would be happy to have him over their current starter.

Ah lol, I remember that. I am not a big Spurrier fan but his incessant taunting of Tennessee used to be big fun. Why wouldn't you touch the Washington job? They were an elite team this decade and their main rivals are the Washington State Cougars.
