Apparently, my fellow Montreal fans have forgotten that this was only the first round of the playoffs and that you aren't supposed to riot until AFTER you win the Stanley Cup.
Watching this game last night, you would have thought that the Canadiens would be hoisting the Cup after the game. They beat the 8th seed Bruins, for crying out loud. In 7 games! It took 7 games to beat the Bruins?? Yeah, I'm not seeing Stanley Cup in their future. Damn Quebecois arsonists!
This is pretty shameful. Not because there was a riot, but because it was only after the first round. Come on Habs fans, this is the CANADIENS. It used to be that nothing was acceptable except the Cup itself. First-round wins should be expected, not something to celebrate.
“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras
Good God, at least the Lakers and Pistons waited until they won a championship to riot. And this riot put those two to shame. Those silly Montrealians.

In our defence:
1) The Bruins were SCRAPPY
2) Old Six rivalry = GHOSTS
3) Even though historically the Canadiens have owned the Bruins it has never, ever, EVER been easy to get rid of them. If the Canadiens are Van Helsing than the Bruins are Vlad Tepes. You have to put a stake through the heart of the Bruins, put a garlic bagel in their mouths and then cut their heads off and even then you don't feel comfortable until they totter off to play golf.
4) The only reason that the Bruins were in 8th place in the first place was because we swept all eight games against them in the regular season. If the Bruins had gone .500 against the Canadiens they would have been tied for First Place with the Penguins.
4a) It got harder and harder to beat the Bruins as the season wore on. And once the Bruins won Game 3, they really believed that they could win the series.
5) Despite all the talk about the Young Guns Penguins, the youngest team in the League are the Canadiens. Inexperienced enough to relax after getting series leads of 2-0 and 3-1 and let the Bruins claw back.
6) There was the sense after that wild Game Six where the lead changed hands four-five times in under five minutes, that the Bruins were finally going to get the Canadiens monkey off their backs similar to the Red Sox coming back down 3-0 to take out the Yankees.

But yes we are all deeply embarrassed by the incident and we promise not to burn down Downtown Montreal anymore...

Man, I totally remember the Pistons winning in 1990 to make it Back to Back championships. But, I don't remember any news of riots but a google search produced snips from various articles that cited 7 or 8 people being shot and killed during the riots to "celebrate" the championship. I wonder if the murders were caused by over-zealous "fans" or just happened to occur on the night they won and other shenanigans were occurring...
As for the '84 Tigers, I remember a classic black and white photo of a dude standing in front of an upside-down cop car that was on fire whilst holding a Detroit Tigers pennant. Now that's classy.
Anyways, there were no notable riots in 2004 for the Pistons and nothing for the Wings in their recent championships. But, yeah, cmon Montreal it has only been 15 years since the last championship. It's not like you're Toronto or anything.
[WDFN]Oh wait, the Leafs have won the last 12 out of 15 Stanley Cups according to Leaf-Fan[/WFDN]

Somewhere in the dungeons of the MSG Sean Avery is snarling for not getting to try out new dirty tricks on Carey Price. Hrrm...maybe in the finals...
WHOOOOOOOOOOO! About damn time! Now that that's behind me - the Canes can look ahead to round two. They'll either wind up with Montreal, Toronto, or the Isles since mathematically it's not possible for them to face Boston or Ottawa.
