It's the end of December, and an annual tradition is again upon us. Not Christmas, not New Year's Eve, yes, it's NFL firing day.
Confirmed casualties so far- Andy Reid in Philadelphia. Pat Shurmur and GM Tom Heckert in Cleveland, Romeo Crennel in Kansas City, and GM Scott Pioli is still on very thin ice there. GM Gene Smith is out in Jacksonville, but no decision yet on Mike Mularkey. Mike Tannenbaum is out as Jets GM, but Rex Ryan is staying. Lovie Smith is out in Chicago, Chan Gailey is done in Buffalo, no word yet on GM Buddy Nix. San Diego is expected to fire Norv Turner, and AJ Smith, but it is not official yet. No word yet out of Arizona or Carolina.
So, to sum up, if you want to aim for the stars, here are some places you can apply:
Buffalo- Head Coach, possibly GM Philadelphia- Head Coach Cleveland- Head Coach and GM Kansas City- Head Coach, possibly GM Jacksonville- GM, possibly Head Coach NY Jets- GM Chicago- Head Coach San Diego- Head Coach and GM Arizona- possibly Head Coach Carolina- possibly Head Coach

I hope KC gives Romeo a gardening job after what he went through this season.
Yeah, if anything the GM being back in charge is more of an embarrassment. Steelers need to fire their GM for the Haley hire, a platoon of RBs with only one being good, but a rookie who sees no time while letting old guys still keep their jobs on both sides of the ball and yeah, no good back-up QB.

Yeah, because all he's done is sign James Harrison as an undrafted free agent, sign Rashard Mendenhall as an undrafted free agent, trade up to draft Troy Polamalu, draft a big quarterback from Miami of Ohio, sign James Farrior away from the Jets, draft an immediate Pro Bowl center from Florida, gave Hines Ward money instead of Plaxico, drafted Mike Wallace and Emmanuel Sanders in the 3rd round and Antonio Brown in the 6th, built teams that went to three Super Bowls and won two of them. Yeah, that guy is terrible.
No back up quarterback has been a problem for a few years now but other than that the problem with the Steelers wasn't the offensive coach or the GM. Roethlisberger, Wallace and Brown just sucked. Ben uncharacteristically single-handedly gave away two games on interceptions and the receivers had TWELVE fumbles! Twelve! Nobody gets double digit fumbles from their receivers, that's insane.

You're pretty much spot on with everything, but wasn't Mendenhall a 1st round pick?
If Pioli doesn't get axed I'm done as a Chiefs fan.

And, am I the only one who thinks Andy Reid ends up in Chicago?
I kept hearing today Andy Reid to SD.
Shermer had no change with a new proactive owner and club president.
Of the fired candidates, I would guess that Lovie and Whisenhunt will definitely be head coaches again next year, and probably Reid too.

Can someone tell me how much dirt Rex Ryan must have on everyone to allow him to actually keep his job after his embarrassment called a season.
Unless the Jets think they can do better being the Harlem Globetrotters of the NFL, of course, and he's kept on for sheer amusement to see what dumb thing he'll do next.

Not only will Lovie have a decent track record to point to, he fits the requirements of Rooney Rule. He'll be interviewing for many jobs.
I have this strong feeling he'll end up in Buffalo, home for old Bears coaches.

Dirt = strong proof it was the GM who wanted Tebow and/or gave Sanchez that contract extension. I bet his late season QB merry-go-round was more about making a point about what he'd been given and shifting than blame than the QBs themselves (though finally playing Tebow and Tebow pulling a game out would've been poor for his cause.) Rex is also signed for 2 more years, and it seem like most owners are willing to eat only 1.
The real problem for Rex is they may have trouble getting better enough - they're still stuck with Sanchez or a massive cap hit, and not a lot of money for a new QB - and he may just get to be a lame duck coach for a year while the new GM starts turning the players over.

I understand that Whisenhunt was dealt a bad hand re: QBs, but he's never shown any patience or understanding regarding QBs. Forget slotting Skelton ahead of Kolb, or Lindley ahead of Skelton; remember him alternating serieses between Leinart and Warner?

I also respect Rex Ryan as a coach, but HC with a new GM is a thankless job unless he proves himself as unfireable, but as Cubs notes, this next couple of years could be very awful regardless of the coaching job.
