So, I had a "friend" post on facebook some sort of quasi-racist meme that he copied from another guy. I have known this person for 30 years or so. I don't know that we are exactly friends - but we have worked together.

So I didn't know what to do. Call him out on it publicly? Unfriend him? Snooze him.

Full disclosure: I am a right winger of sorts. but I am growing more and more uneasy with our party's leadership.

So I asked a guy I have known about the same period of time who stays off social media. and he comes back with that whole jive about how as many white unarmed guys get killed by cops and that in each case of black guys getting killed the "cops could have handled it a different way" implying that the way they handled it was ok but it could have been better.

and I thought to myself: am I the only guy at my workplace (the local one) that thinks it is just possible that too many unarmed black men are being killed by police officers?

Full Disclosure: I used to be a police officer

What the actual you know what are people thinking in this day and age. This is why we will never fix race relations in this country and why there is so much rage. Because too many white guys are like my friends. I take responsibility for what we have done and am trying to do everything I can to fix it. I just don't know if I can.

I apologize for my racial group's total idiocy and hatefulness.

I've been wrestling (no pun intended) with this recently as well. One thought has planted in my mind about 'what can I do?'

There's no way that race relations would have gotten this bad with anyone else in the White House. As much as I hate voting on the basis of a single issue, this single issue is worth breaking that rule.

Not that I support what he says, but I think that is bull.
did President Trump Stop Charlotte and the shooting of Scott? No. it went on for a few days and spread to other cities
Did President Obama stop Ferguson after the death of Brown? or the other places that followed it, like Baltimore and Oakland?
How about before that with Obama in Brooklyn when Grey was killed?
Did Bush stop the Oakland riots on the BART slaying?
How about Bush - did he stop the Benton Harbor riots after Shurn was killed?
How about the Washinton Heights riots in 1992 after Jose Garcia was murdered? did Clinton stop those?

I could go on if you want

But Trump is certainly not helping. In fact, he's doing the opposite of helping.

Exactly. While it's true that cops have abused their power and brutalized black and other marginalized people for as long as there have been cops, we've had years of Trump sowing divisiveness and racial hatred and flooding his followers with disinformation. Started well before he was president. He's too racist and unfeeling to handle this situation with care and he's too stupid to handle it tactically. You'd be hard pressed to find a worse person to try and deal with things right now.

with respect, as bad as he is doing, I don't think it is any worse than any other president. There were more riots (at least according to the internet) during the previous president's watch. And he's noted for being such a healer. and I liked him. I just don't see a difference.

I don't think you're saying you can't see the difference between how Trump and Obama behave, are you?

Interesting way of looking at it. I had made essentially the same statement to a black friend and he had essentially the same response - that racism isn't worse under Trump than before.

My thought process was that a good chunk of Trump supporters seem to be of the Confederate flag waving variety, or at least, that portion of the supporters seem more likely to wave that flag. Please note that I am NOT saying that Trump supporters are racist. I am saying that a portion of those supporters seem more likely to wave those colors under seeming approval from Trump.

I think what JR (my friend) was saying is that maybe some of us are only now seeing what has been his reality all of this time. I've told him I hope to be able to talk with him about this -- we don't live near each other, so it isn't like I can do this 'easily'.

No. I am saying that their behavior hasn't made any difference with regard to racism in this country

Well, studies do show that Trump's election led to a rise in hate crimes.

https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3102652

https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2019/08/14/trump-and-racism-what-do-the-data-say/

Overall hate crimes are at their highest level since the aftermath of 9/11. Perhaps not surprisingly, the biggest increase has been in crimes against Latinos; crimes against African-Americans have actually gone down.

https://www.axios.com/hate-crimes-fbi-report-high-violent-property-6f9b013a-e448-4bd5-a18d-4b4643710362.html

South Asians in particular have suffered a severe rise in hate crimes.

https://thewire.in/external-affairs/no-place-donald-trumps-great-america

And in the wake of the COVID panademic, there has been a significant rise in hate crimes against East Asians. I don't think there's yet data tying this specifically to Trump--I don't know that it would even be possible to separate the effects of what Trump has said from what would have happened with this outbreak if Trump hadn't said those things--but his insistence on calling it the "Chinese virus" or "Wuhan virus", to the point where he scrapped a G7 statement on the virus because other countries wanted to use a more neutral term, certainly isn't helping.
