If you missed the first episode of "The Joe Buck Show"...well, no one can blame you. I actually forgot all about it, thanks to my natural apathy towards Joe Buck combined with my hatred for all things related to Brett Favre's alleged retirement.
But if you missed it, Artie Lange apparently made the big headlines.
"He can go do as many Howard Stern shows as he likes . . but he will no longer appear on HBO Sports or 'Joe Buck Live,' " HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg told The Post yesterday.
-"Joe, TMZ is your favorite website? What's your second, suckingcock.com?" -"I'm on TMZ constantly, did you see what Angelina was wearing today? What the fuck, how about going to a sports website for Christ's sake?" -"As a Giants fan, and a well-known homophobic, it's like a white trash gift from god that the fucking Cowboys have a quarterback whose last name rhymes with homo." -"And he's dating a fat chick! Jessica Simpson started out looking like Jessica Simpson, now she looks like Chris Farley from those Gap sketches." -Lange: I wanna be working construction by next Thursday, I hate show business. Buck: You're on your way. Lange: So are you!
And of course...
Finally, near the end of the segment, Lange takes out a cigarette and an increasingly earnest Buck yelled at him not to light it.
"If you do that, sir! Sir, you cannot do that," Buck shouted.
"I won't light it," Lange said.
"You think I care about you smoking a cigarette after what you just laid out here?" Buck said, leading Lange to say, "Fuck it, let's do it bro" and light up. "No, don't, please!" Buck said.
"Say what you mean," Lange said back.
Well, this all sounds very...not funny. I have no sympathy for HBO on this one, since they should have known exactly what they were getting with Lange, who never had a 15 minutes to begin with, so I can't even say they're up. This all sounds very fascinating from an unintentional comedy perspective, as Buck (from the bits and pieces from PTI that I heard) sounded mortified through every passing minute.
Did anyone see this and was it as bad as everyone made it sound?

People keep saying this, but I have to disagree. Artie has made several appearances on Dan Patrick's radio show and was always very funny and self-depreciating. Nothing like this.
That being said, Lange is a big ol' douchebag and should probably be banned from all forms of media all together. I'm not a Joe Buck fan or anything (I dont even get HBO), but you'd have to be a top shelf a-hole to do what Artie Lange did on his show (which I did get to see clips of afterwards).
Yeah, Artie's "never had a 15 minutes" includes a NYT best-selling book.
I have no doubt that HBO people told him to "liven things up" but I also believe he went into business for himself.
If you get the chance, Lange's conversation yesterday with Chris Russo on Sirius was just as heated, with just as many vulgarities, probably due to the fact that Russo thought Artie "didn't need to work blue to be funny."
All this is said by a 20-year+ Stern listener who really doesn't like Artie all that much and misses the days with Jackie and/or Billy West.
Did anyone catch his interview on NPR last week? It was... weird. I mean he's on to promote his book I think, and pretty much he ended up talking about how he always screws everything up and he's not sure it isn't on purpose. Not that it excuses his behavior, but it really seems like he was trying to do a cry for help but doesn't quite know how to go about it, because he's sought help before and nothing has really helped.
It was a little unsettling to hear someone being so honest about how screwed up they are, have been, and will continue to be.

I know he did an interview with Terry Gross a few months ago when the book came out. It was shocking how in-tune she was with him and the Stern show. WHYY must have great producers.
Obviously he did this to deflect all the attention away from his boy Letterman.
Actually, he's been acting super coked up during this attempt to kick heroin. There's been an increasingly vocal section of the audience complaining about his attitude over the last two or so months. Frankly, I've been digging him more. He's turned into a less refined Bill Hicks.
Also: The funniest part of the whole thing is this Ross Greenberg who really made a BOLD move in banning Artie. What other show was he a threat to be on?
Greenberg should've been shown the door right after he canceled Inside the NFL (and subsequently lost Costas.)

It was bad in that half the time his jokes weren't even funny. Just a poor attempt at crude humor, which I usually dig. Joe I thought actually reacted fairly well, if you take away the quick "no don't smoke" second. He got a couple of great digs in on Artie, and didn't get flustered by it all.
But then again I think Joe Buck is really great at what he does. This show was kinda boring overall though, but for a first show it was fine.
I watched it tonight after reading the thread, and expected way more. He was funny, then he rambled and was less so. Blacklisted for that, though? I don't get it....it didn't seem over the top to me, because with Artie Lange, they'd have to know what they were going to get.
I used to think Artie was ok but goddamn what a first class dickhead. I happen to like Joe Buck but I also loved hearing his dad call games as well. I really wish that Artie would just go away. That was just completely uncalled for...

Here's the thing: Like Super Shane Spear said, Artie has seem to have a more aggresive attitude in the last month or so on the Stern show. The most noticeable bit for me was when he went off on Lisa G. and the rest of the Howard newscast, though while I can't think of other specific incidents off my head. That said, if Joe Buck was really a fan of the show, he would had known that he was getting a slightly unhinged Artie as of late. More importantly, they made a great point on the wrap-up show about if he really was a good host, he would had done a much better job reining in Lange after the first couple of (admittingly weak) jokes.
One last thing: HBO is outraged with the profanities being said by Artie on the show. REALLY??? The same network kept relevant by featuring such profane-filled shows as "The Sopranos" & "The Wire"? I don't have a problem with curse words, but I do with shows and networks that go all out with them one minute and then the next claim that they're a family network when something doesn't go right for them. It's almost as hypocritical as when FOX puts reality shows and dramas that can be considered bordering on bad taste on network TV but then turns around on its news channel and laments the 'disgusting' stuff they see on the other TV channels?

Joe Buck looked COMPLETELY out of his element. "Flustered" doesn't even begin to describe it. Lange ran roughshod all over Joe Buck's show, and probably the only thing that kept Buck from having a nervous breakdown on the spot was the presence of Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis.
I thought Artie was pretty funny. I loved his ancedote about Joe's dad. Good stuff there.
For what it's worth, I HATE Howard Stern. I really don't see much of Artie Lange. Is he like this all the time? Super Shane Spear is dead on with the comparison to Bill Hicks.

Well what the heck did you expect him to do? Get angry and start a pissing contest? Yell at the guy and kick him out? I'm pretty sure the Joe Buck haters would have been on him even worse if he had done that. He sat there and dealt with it. Uncomfortable sure, but so was everyone else in that studio while it was going on. He handled it about as well as anyone could expect in my view. Got in some digs, didn't act like a hurt puppy.

Actually, no, I don't think he handled it well at all. "Like a hurt puppy" is actually a pretty good description of how he looked. By the end of the show, he kept turning to Michael Irvin and anyone else off-camera for some sort of help, although I'm not sure what exactly he was looking for. Lamenting his impending cancellation (during the series premiere!) sounds pretty bad, don't you think? Like I said, Rudd and Sudeikis were the only thing keeping all hell from breaking loose. And if you've been following the sports talk shows, they all seem to agree that Buck got his keister handed to him and looked pretty bad in the process.
Of course he looked flustered. Here's a man who couldn't handle the Randy Moss fake mooning without blathering on for half an hour about it, and he gets somebody who (allegedly) was TOLD to go out and rip the place up.
Joe Buck deserves a job at HBO about as much as I do. I am not a huge Artie Lange fan, but Jesus, what did they expect?
I finally saw the clip and I don't think Buck's reaction was as bad as everyone made it seem. Artie's outburst didn't seem all that bad either. It's HBO, the only problem was it wasn't Bill Maher or Bob Costas doing the interview. I can only imagine how dull the segment would have been if Buck got to show old photos the whole time.
If HBO wanted to get rid of somebody they should get rid of the people putting together horrible programing like this.
