So here I am, in yet another Covid lockdown (This is my fifth for those keeping score at home). Only 5 acceptable reasons to leave the home, and no farther than 5km, and must wear a mask at all times. Plus it's cold and rainy out, so whatevs. Such is life on hermit island in 2021.*
What else is there to do other than re-up Netflix and binge watch zombie apocalypse movies?
So that's what I did. And given the movie in question featured our very own Dave Bautista in the lead role, I figured I'd talk about it here. Whilst I'm on a Teams call that I don't need to interact on.
Zombie apocalypse, based in Las Vegas. Vegas I think definitely works as a location due to its geographical isolation combined with its interesting city-scape.
Trigger is a road crash where the military were transporting a zombie "alpha". Why, where, because we never know. But he gets loose and hits up Vegas. Chaos ensues. Mass infection. Some people get out and they encase the city in a "ring of steel" comprised of shipping containers stacked three high. No really.
It's funny now watching these movies through the lens of 2020/2021 now the we have actual data about how people behave during an epidemic. So I'm looking at these shipping containers and going, "yeah - that'll leak".
That's the setup. Our movie is based upon a sneaky snake wanting our Dave to put a crew together to heist some of the millions of cash in a casino's safe. So we're a combo of zombie and heist genres here.
Dave puts his crew together, and because people are selfish, greedy and shit, everyone's "You son of a bitch - I'm in!". I was happy to see Tig Notaro cast in this as I like her laid back, sarcastic comedy stylings. Plus she's got a nice smile.
One of the things the movie does do, is try to overlay some social structure in the zombies - shamblers vs fast movers. Alpha's, rules, etc. Which is kinda interesting. But outside of explaining why some move fast and some don't - I think they left a lot untapped. But we do get a zombie white tiger.
It's a heist - so naturally there's a double cross. The double-cross annoys the zombie king so that's what kicks off the real zombie violence as the team tries to get out with their cash. Oh, and the pres brought forward the nuking of Vegas a day so as not to coincide with July 4 - so they've got like an hour to escape and reach safe distance!!!
A nuke? Really? Wouldn't a fuel/air bomb, or a succession of same be just as effective but without the fallout? Eh, it's not like Nevada can't take another one for the team.
So where are we? Oh yeah, king zombie is annoyed because the team killed queen zombie who was pregnant!!!
And once again I have questions. So these zombies root now? Or was she pregnant already when infected? And if so, why does Kingy care? And what is the purpose of reproducing human style when the zombie virus is transferred through biting? Maybe that's how you make more King zombies? King bites a human to get a fast mover. Non king biting a human makes a shambler. But wouldn't the zombification of a woman render her human reproductive, erm, stuff non functional?
Alas, we never find out. Same as we never find out why the King zombie was keeping some human women alive upstairs at the Olympia, save for a plot device for Dave's annoying daughter with her tantalising side-boob showing white top to go rogue on her own agenda.
Anyway, I won't spoil the ending. But I do hope they at least moved the refugee camps that were setup on the OUTSIDE OF THE VERY SHIPPING CONTAINERS ISOLATING THE ZOMBIES before they dropped the nuke. But who knows given politicians of today? Certainly not us, the viewer.
Yeah, it's a stupid movie. But it's certainly not the worst zombie movie I've seen. Hell, it wasn't even the worst zombie movie I watched that day. But, you know, Citizen Kane it ain't.
* - yeah, I do feel kinda bad about whinging about Covid lockdown. Given everyone who ends up reading this will likely be living in a country more impacted than mine, with deaths and sickness and all. My state is locked down with 96 cases. 96. That would be a rounding error for Florida. I think we've had 2 people die this year. But bugger all people here are vaccinated. For various reasons. But mostly political incompetence. Not the place to discuss that - but it certainly creates an interesting lens to view zombie apocalypse through - given the premise there is mostly the same. Virus transmission.
Tig Notaro was cast as a replacement for Chris D'Elia after he had some sexual allegations levied at him. Chris had already filmed his parts, so Tig recorded everything separately and was CGI'ed in where needed. There's an article I can't find now where she talks about joking that she was the star of the movie since she was literally the only actor on set, and the director would make comments like "you don't need to do much here. We're just inserting you in the background of a group shot so you won't even be in focus."

I too enjoy Naruto, and I hope it's dubbed well when whichever company eventually buys the rights to it. Also, I thought Fullmetal Alchemist was pretty good, even if it was hard to tell exactly what happened at the beginning there.
