Knicks, Cavs, Nuggets and Warriors lead the surging pre-season pack for that coveted #1 pick........ a year or two of college may start to look good to him in a few weeks

I think David Stern is already developing a rigged ping pong ball for the Knicks.

I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.

He should go to the University of Kentucky.

Okay, I had to say that, it is a foregone conclusion that he'll skip college. But, the fact is, that unless he is the most talented player ever, he won't contribute for a few years. How long did it take McGrady to make an impact? How long did it take Kobe?

The problem is, he would be better to play one or two years of college ball then be a superstar immediately in the NBA. However, few people are willing to sacrifice the $$$ he'd make. The contract is no big deal (to the players that is), that's pretty well set in stone with NBA rules, but a shoe company will give him the GDP of a small country to endorse their product. I can't begrudge him taking the money, but he'd be better as a player more quickly if he did some college first.

Well, the word I've heard about him is that he's actually polished enough to go straight from high school to the NBA. There's no reason for him to go to college... kinda like Caron Butler not really needing to stay at UConn any longer. If I was James, I wouldn't even bother with college ball. (Of course, I'd at least try to get a degree, but that's just me.)

While I agree that guys should go to college and not enter the NBA straight out of high school, think about this:

What if LeBron James went to Kentucky and suffered a career-ending injury in his first game? Goodbye, NBA dreams... goodbye, millions of bucks.

With the ludicrous amount of money the NBA pays even its worst players, a likely #1 pick would have to be completely out of his mind not to skip college and enter the draft immediately. A few years in the NBA under a guaranteed contract, and you'll never have to work another day in your life.

Then, if a degree is that important to you, you can always go to college courses during the NBA offseason (like Kevin Garnett is doing at Minnesota), or wait until after you retire.

My point is, the way NBA players are getting paid, a college degree (unless it's from a medical school) would be hardly worth the paper it's printed on.

He should go to the University of Kentucky on the Shawn Kemp plan.
