Well, I'm a Chiefs fan until they start 0-whatever and Smith never regains the form he finally seemed to have found. Just seems like that's where this is going, really hope I'm wrong.
Anyway, the scarier piece of news for fans of any team but the 49ers is that, by picking up San Francisco's second round pick, they now own 11 picks in the upcoming draft, including at the top of the second round and near the top of the third round. They certainly have the potential to add some quality and get even better.
If I had admin powers, this would be your name now.
If you told me Alex Smith would cost a second round pick, I'd believe you, but I wouldn't have thought it would practically be a first round pick.

I just reread what I wrote and wanted to clarify: I wouldn't be shocked if the Chiefs were significantly better next year, both because I like Reid and because that's just the way it goes in the NFL. I just meant Smith is probably not going to be much more than he has been for most of his career, but definitely less than what he was the past two seasons under Harbaugh. But I do admire Smith and hope I'm wrong, I'm cheering for him.

I don't think Alex Smith is much of an upgrade, but the one thing I sort of have faith with Andy Reid in is the way he builds up QBs.
The Chiefs still have a lot of moves to make, but if you want to be the turn around team in 2013 playing in the AFC West is as good a start as any.
If the Niners use some of those picks to do what the Pats did in the Welker/Moss year lookout.
Smith (while no world-beater) is definitely a big upgrade over the cesspool that was the Chiefs' QB situation last year. Between him and Reid alone, I wouldn't be shocked if Kansas City even stole the sixth seed, especially given their division and the fact that they're matched up against the AFC South next year.

I don't think Alex Smith is much of an upgrade,
Anything would be an upgrade over the combined powers of Quinn and Cassel.

And Adam Schefter tweeted that the Cardinals have expressed interest in Cassel. Because of course they have.

You know what would be an upgrade over Matt Cassel? Good Matt Cassel. He's got two years where teams went 10-5 in his starts and he had a 48/18 TD/INT-ratio. Then there's the other Matt Cassel, of his other three KC seasons. I realize W-L record and TD/INT ratio aren't the be-alls of QB stats, but...
QB A: 17-31 W/L record as starter, 51 INT/54 TD QB B: 9-23 W/L record as starter, 37 INT/32 TD
QB B is Bad Matt Cassel. QB A? That's pre-Jim Harbaugh Alex Smith. I'm pretty sure Alex isn't bringing Harbaugh to KC with him.

No, but he'll be going to Andy Reid, who had Kolb looking like enough of a world beater so he could pawn him off to AZ... Actually now, I'd like to see what he could get for Cassel after building him up for a season.
