As the Major League season comes to a close, has anyone else noticed that the Oakland A's are stumbling down the final stretch? Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson have struggled, losing big games when it counts.
The Anaheim Angels haven't been much better, as they haven't capitalized on a single opportunity to gain ground. It's Tuesday as of this post, and once again, both Oakland AND Anaheim have lost.
The conflict will come to a head over the next two weeks, as Oakland and Anaheim meet head-to-head six times to end the season, but whoever comes out on top, will they have any momentum going into the playoffs?

Adam Kennedy is now gone for the season, so Anaheim has taken another hit. Or, maybe they'll remember when half their team was on the DL earlier this year and they were playing great baseball. Only time....will tell.

Unless Anaheim takes five or six from the A's, and with the way they're playing I don't see them taking five or six out of six from anyone, Oakland takes the division. They've still got four at home against Seattle. Split the Angels, beat Seattle and it's done. I'd be much happier if Mulder and Hudson could shake whatever has been wrong with them the last month or so, but they're still going to win the division.

Still feel that way? The Rangers have 6 with Seattle, and are playing exceptionally hot right now.
I'll provide the scenario where Texas at minimum forces a 1 game playoff: They take minimum 2 out of 3 this weekend in Seattle, while Anaheim takes 2 out of 3 from Oakland. That puts everyone within a game going into the last week. Texas then MUST beat Anaheim 3 out of 4 at home, while hoping Seatle takes at least 1 from Oakland. That would put Texas 1 out with 3 to go, and Anaheim 3 out with 3 left. Should Anaheim at least extend their season a day by winning next Friday Night against Oakland, that would mean Texas could go into Seattle and sweep and guarantee minimum a tie. It's a longshot, but its more than I would have given Texas last Saturday morning.
Originally posted by piemanYes, Texas is a long shot, but I am pulling for them. I would love to see them slide by the A's and Angels for the West crown!
Tomorrow, if the Rangers and Angels win, then all 3 teams will be within a game of each other. It's definitely not a two man race like some have been saying.
The Angels and A's are tied. Texas, for all intents and purposes, are pretty much done after dropping the last two to Anaheim. Indeed, it looks like it'll come down to the final three games of the season.
Stay tuned.

sorry rangers fans, but after an amazing game yesterday texas is officially knocked out the playoffs. the angels on the other hand have won five straight and have a lot of momentum going into the final 4 games.
The A's have quickly moved into territory normally inhabited by the '64 Phillies and '87 Blue Jays. 3 up with 8 to go turns into 1 down with 4 to go, with 3 of those losses at home to a near 100 loss team leads to the term COLLAPSE being used. Either that, or the A's thought the games the last week of the season were playoff series clinching games, and reacted accordingly.
If you wanna say he's injury-prone or overpaid, fine, but don't accuse him of tanking non-contract seasons. The one season in the past three where he wasn't healthy (2005) he broke his wrist upon being hit by a pitch, IIRC.
