Yep. Bill Watterson, who wrote Calvin and Hobbes, ripped Davis a few times for his greed in merchandising Garfield. And really, Garfield hasn't had a new joke in what, 15 years? The licencing money train is the only reason he keeps doing it, I imagine.
And I bet the movie studio greenlighted Garfield: The Movie the Monday after Scooby Doo's opening weekend. Replace a computer-generated Scooby Doo with a computer-generated Garfield, replace a wooden Sarah Michele Gellar with a wooden Jennifer Love Hewitt, and you have a licence to print money, right?
They got a mule they call Sal, bulldozing up canal walls. They're gonna tap that icecap too, And when they do they're gonna make that green map blue. And the weather is finally getting warm ...

I hate to even bring up the idea knowing what mainstream Hollywood would do to it, but IF DONE PROPERLY, a Calvin & Hobbes movie would be pretty awesome. Bill Watterson is too much of an anti-commercialist to entertain the idea, however, not that I can blame him after seeing what tripe Garfield is likely to be.
There's been some talk of a Hagar the Horrible movie too....good God. Until they somehow make a movie of Herman, forget it.
There is no way in hell a live-action Garfield movie will work. All Hollywood is gonna do is ruin one of my favorite childhood classics (Just like how the new Ren & Stimpy ruins my memories from the classics). Whoever is making this movie, please use your talents to ruin something else, like The Fantasic Four or somethin.
Um... is it just me, or does it look like, you know,
THIS IS SOMEONE'S IDEA OF A HOAX!!!
Come on, I read the article on Ain't It Cool over the weekend and was killing myself laughing. The reason that doesn't look like Garfield is probably because THAT ISN'T GARFIELD! I mean, someone probably pulled a picture of a cartoon cat, then some stock photos of the two stars, and added text that said `Garfield' at the bottom.
Anyways, I'll believe that there's actually a movie when I see something a bit more conclusive.

Bill Murray could be interesting, although I did like Lorenzo Music's voice from the tv cartoon; he also voiced Bill Murray's character in The Real Ghostbusters.

They really should have gone looking for Lorenzo Music on this one. I know when I think of Garfield, I'll always think of this man's voice. Not only could they have gotten a recognizable voice, but I'll bet Music would have worked for a lot less money than Bill Murray.
LS: Can you make me exciting? GD: I don't know. Can you get me back on TV?

July 4th 1994: It was a bright sunny day in this small Ohio town. All was not bright for the four disfranchised men however, there hearts were not full of patriotic glee, there intentions not set on the social gathering taking place on the cities streets. Flemming, Parish, Sidell, Weigal gathered round the TV to watch Benny Hinn, a loud sound, similar to gunfire startled their medicated hearts. When the four men went to the door, to examine the situation they were greeted with 600 of the towns citizens, chanting in unison. TARDS GO HOME...TARDS GO HOME!!!!
