Wow, what a steaming pile of shit.

I thought Raw was bad. I had my hopes all up for this game, because it was supposedly more like No Mercy, sadly STILL the best wrestling game ever made. The graphics are all right (not as good as Raw's though) and some of the reversal animations are very good, but that's about it.

CAW is abysmal. If a WWE wrestler doesn't use a move, your CAW can't either. No damage rating is assign to any move, so chokeslams and eye rakes have the same effect and can be pulled out at any time.

If you hit someone with one move, then you can just keep standing behind them as they get up and hit move after move until they reverse. Fatigue and damage plays NO role in this game. If I build up 3 finishers with SCSA, and hit Tazz in a ladder match with 3 stunners, he will STILL get up before I get the ladder in place.

Whoever at THQ who thought Yukes! was better than AKI needs to be taken out to a field and shot. The Smackdown! games are all right, but do we need the same thinly veiled ARCADE AXXION~ engine on every system?

I wish my copy of Wrestlemania 2000 wasn't all buggered up.

Revenge is kickass because it has La Parka.

The whole engine is great, but I mainly play these games for multi-player, and No Mercy has a better multi-player system. I'm a big fan of running grapples, too.

I was considering buying a GameCube solely for this game, but I think I'll save my money after everything I've heard about it. By the way, I've heard that the nWo and Booker T have different music in the game. Kinda strange. Could it have something to do with the fact that WCW made that music? Anyone hear anything about this? I also hear that the Hardyz have an instrumental version of their song from Forced Entry. I know that their music wasn't made by the WWE either. What's the deal?

Virtual Prowrestling 2 is better than No Mercy and Wrestlemania 2000.

No Chuck & Billy in the game? Wassupwitdat? The tag team champs aren't there, even as hidden characters. Inexcusable. But we get Steph & Stacy as playable characters.

::grumble:: I wanted to use "You Look So Good to Me" as theme music ::grumble::

I think the reason that the nWo, Booker, and the Hardyz have different music is that the music they currently use is in the public domain. If I recall correctly, you can buy a CD with a bunch of generic tracks on it. With the purchase of the CD comes the right to use the music in any way, so long as you don't profit by it. That's why you'll sometimes hear wrestler themes used on the radio or in local news broadcasts. WCW was really bad about relying on these themes.

It's not public domain... it's something else where you buy the rights to the work and can use them for that fee... but not on a per use basis. I forget what this was called - someone from the old board knew all about it. You might want to search the Random folder on the old CRZ Ez-board if you are interested.

Yes but the Hardy's music was in BOTH Smackdown AND RAW, both which are published by THQ.

Could you be thinking of "royalty-free"? That's the term used to describe photos used under those conditions. When you buy stock photography, you pay for it per use, and you have to tell Corbis or whoever how you're going to use it. When you buy royalty-free photos, you just pay a one-time fee and you can use the image as much as you want.

The music thing has something to do with copywrite issues. The nWo and Booker T themes couldn't be used because EA, through its contract to produce WCW games, still own the rights to use the music in its games from what I understand.
Don't know why the Hardy Boyz would have different music. It's a piece that used everywhere (I've heard it on the Toughman show on FX, and both Fox Sports and ESPN). And they use it once a week every week, plus its on all the Smackdown games to date. So who knows.

(points to self) Not sure if it might be me to whom you refer... but I can help out with this stuff.

First of all, Guru's right - it's not public domain. Public domain is when the work is allowed to be used by the public without having to pay any fee or royalty. Stuff the "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" or early jazz compositions have been around long enough to have their copyright protection run out, and now they're in the public domain. If the music for the nWo, Booker T, and the Hardy Boys was in the public domain, then the WWF, er, WWE would be allowed to put it in the game for no charge.

What Guru's referring to is production music - works from a music production library. Those works are copyrighted, but can generally be licensed for much less than your Kid Rock or Uncle Cracker track. The music production library I used to work for offered two different types of licensing - needledrop, which is a per use basis; or blanket licensing, which covers every track in the music library for a particular use in a particular media market or particular medium. Either of these options covered synchronization rights - putting the music in synch with some video (TV, a movie, a game, etc.). There was also a small fee for mechanical royalties - loosely translated, covering the costs of actually making the CDs. Also, our library used to charge extra if you were to put that music into some product you were going to sell... which may be why those cuts aren't in the game.

Of course, it does strike me as odd, since No Mercy had the Hardys music in it. And Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy had "Real American" in it, which is definitely not production music - last time I checked, BMG Music Publishing (probably Universal Music Group now, after all the late 90s merger madness) owned at least part of the rights of that song. Ergo, it's more expensive to license than production music probably would be. Perhaps the game makers and the WWF, er, WWE are allocating their budgets to different things than music now?

Edit: And shit, look at the Blue Meanie's music from Wrestlemania 2000. You can't last for 20 minutes on E! without hearing the damn track at least once. More production music right there. Oh yeah, and fixed the term for production music.

I rented the game, and yes, it does blow goats.

On the Hardy Boyz music, wasn't the song used the Monster Magnet song off Forceable Entry?

As for the Booker and NWO Themes, those sucked.

And the CAW was terribly hideous.

And Yukes still has no concept of physics in wrestling. Does THQ actually think they put out decent games?

We can all hope Fire Pro GC is good... when it finally gets here.

THQ always half-asses the first game with a new engine so they can "fix" everything and say "Look, we listen to our fans!". Remember the mix-and-match heads and torsos in the first Smackdown? And you can't possibly tell me that abomination for the XBox was the best game they could come up with. Even the first WCW N64 game had some serious issues..

I just bet Wrestlemania X9 or whatever they call it has No Mercy's engine and a real Create-A-Wrestler... That way, they can fleece you twice.

WCW vs. NWO: World Tour looked like ass. but, damnit, it was fun. and kicked the shit out of anything acclaim/ljn ever put out. AKI is made up of a bunch of dudes from Human, the makers, or at least used to be, of the Fire Pro games, which is why the engine THQ used for the N64 wrestling games kicked ass. It was done by a group of developers who knew how to make a good wrestling game engine.

For me, CAW features are secondary to having a good game to play.

While the actual in-ring gameplay is more important than anything else, the customization on No Mercy is the main reason it's such a classic. The game's damn near two years old, and my copy looks pretty damned up to date. (Although I am completely out of room at this point. There's a lot of "Um, well, I suppose Jazz can share a moveset with Rhyno.")
