Yep.
Like most people, I thought Nakamura-Ibushi was the match of the night. Probably a MOTYC but it's still the first week of the year.

Was surprised Tanahashi retained. Most feel he has no logical (strong) next challenger. No one challenged him last night so maybe tonight AJ Styles will be the one to call him out (there's a show being streamed on NJPW World as I type this).

Goto/Shibata is one of my favorite teams so I was glad they got the titles. Everyone keeps saying Gallows was doing a Road Warriors rip-off. That facepaint is more Savio Vega TNT than RW.

I loved Ishii-Makabe but some are down on it for no story. Two guys mauling each other is enough story sometimes.

All the Juniors stuff was Juniors stuff.

Sakuraba-Suzuki was fun for what it was.

I used the NJPW World site so I can't comment on JR/Striker on commentary. No problems with the stream although it seemed like I was a few seconds behind people watching the PPV.

Edit: And AJ Styles just challenged Tanahashi after pinning him in an eight-man tag match.

Are there any good English language versions of NJPW stuff? It seems like something I'd really be into, but I don't want to watch raw Japanese. There was evidently a JR/Striker commentary team for the event last night, but what about translations for promos and such?

Basically, is there a good English language way for me to get into this?

Not really. Because Wrestle Kingdom 9 was being shown in the US as part of Jeff Jarrett's GFW it had JR and Striker. Anything else is in Japanese. Possibly if you read up using this: http://the-w.com/njpw-2014-ebook you can catch up and watch the matches after but that comes with knowing the outcomes of everything going in.

I tried to start a thread Sunday night, forgot to put in a title, and the board ate the whole thing. Then I decided to go to bed.

I liked the semimain a lot. I liked the main, though not as much as people who are a lot more invested in the wrestlers. I enjoyed the show and glad to have only $9.

Nah. People were confused when the GFW broadcast started, because they showed the same Japanese language open as the regular broadcast. They did a lot of explaining (and JR/Striker seem to have done better than expected by the end of the show) but there's still a learning curve.

If you're looking to get an introduction, that ebook is a good start, but also AXS TV (ex-HDNet) is starting to air NJPW on Friday nights (this week or next?). The entire idea of that show is to introduce NJPW. If you can get AXS TV, it might even be a better idea to start with that show for a few weeks before diving back into this one. Though you can't really go wrong watching this one.

Watched it and LOVED it! As a fan of pro wrestling it was everything that an older fan who's been insulted by WWE can get behind. Thank goodness for an alternative.

I was able to sit and watch this last night.

I really liked it, but it was a bit hard to sit through four hours of pure wrestling with no story behind the reasons some of them were fighting. I am surprised that I recognized more people than I thought I was going to.

Am I wrong in feeling insulted that all the english/western guys were heels solely because they were not from Japan? Is this how wrestling fans from other countries feel when they watch American wrestling shows?

JR and Striker worked well together. I miss JR and it was great hearing him do what he loves. He sounded very happy to be there. I was curious as to, whether or not they were actually THERE, because I don't remember seeing them on camera at all. At one point, JR mentioned a wrestler walking past their table, but the camera shot was too far away to see them.

I know I'm in a minority on this, but I miss Jeff Jarrett. I wish he was wrestling more. Karen, however, didn't look too good. What was wrong with her face?

AJ Styles reminded me of why I used to love TNA so much. That was the best match I've ever seen him have, I think. He seems to be working at a much faster pace than he did in TNA and he looked great.

Besides AJ Styles, there were two stand out performers who I would love to see wrestle here in the states. Kenny Omega would make a great addition to either WWE or TNA. Why hasn't he been in either one of these companies is beyond me, but it's a damn shame. He's be a star over here. The other one is Shinsuke Nakamura. I've seen some other matches of his, namely with Brock Lesner and Kurt Angle, and he's quite awesome. If he spoke english, he'd be the champ in any promotion here.

YES.

They were there. The English feed piggy backed on the Japanese video and they just choose never to show them.

Omega was actually a WWE developmental guy back when they were using the Deep South group (prior to FCW). He hated it, ask to be fired, and bet on himself making it elsewhere. It was a good bet. (He's not my favorite - that chainsaw bit was way too hookey for me.)

The other one is Shinsuke Nakamura. I've seen some other matches of his, namely with Brock Lesner and Kurt Angle, and he's quite awesome. If he spoke english, he'd be the champ in any promotion here.

He speaks English - at least as well Hideo in NXT, probably better. He lived in Los Angeles for an extended period of time because NJPW is weird sometimes.
