| #1 Posted on 21.3.12 1353.06 Reposted on: 21.3.19 1353.19 | I know most of you don't care about this, but I just watched the press conference since I'm planning on going to this show, and here are some notes I wrote up for friends who are thinking of going:
- Nick Ring, Mitch Clarke, and Jason MacDonald in attendance - Dana introduces Jason MacDonald, who says he hopes to fight on the Calgary show and retire after that event - Mark Hominik joins via very awkward satellite ("That went smooth." - Dana) to announce UFC 152 in Toronto on September 22 - GSP joins via marginally less awkward satellite to announce UFC 154 in Montreal on November 17 - Dana clarifies that Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal will be getting shows "the next two years;" this gets made more clear and less clear as the press conference goes on - Dana confirms that the Calgary main event is a Jose Aldo title defense; not sure against who yet - It's worth noting they haven't actually said the date of the Calgary show yet - Stampeders vs. Roughriders is the Thursday night before the UFC show - SAY THE DATE ALREADY - UFC head of Canadian operations says Montreal and Toronto to be tentpole events every year, and the third Canadian city every year might v- "It's gonna be Calgary" - Dana - oh god someone is trying to ask Mark Hominick a question WHY WHY WHY - It's Mauro Ranallo! He has a question about GSP. - "My re'ab is going very well, my doctor says it' da best re'ab 'e 'as ever seen" - He'd like to fight in Montreal on November 17, but we'll have to see - A friend texted me and said that they finally actually said that the Calgary show is July 21, but I must have missed it - Question in French for GSP - he answers in French that he's not sure when he'll get to fight in Canada next, but he assures us that his first post-injury fight will take place in 2012. - Dana: "We don't get to know." My French immersion finally pays off! - Oh, now GSP is translating for everyone. Jerk. - About 19-20,000 people will be able to fit in the Saddledome - Tickets expected to go on sale 2nd week of May (probably May 9 or 10), but that's not 100% confirmed yet - A few fights for Calgary are booked; Dana can't remember them and gets booed - at any rate, the main card is not ready - Ranallo says "I've been getting tweets from people in Vancouver" and asks about the situation there with the city council and whatnot - Dana says no Vancouver show in the next two years and adds "tweet back that UFC fans don't riot" - questions from fans make my insides hurt - Dana says he'll consider doing a Fight For The Troops show for Canadian forces - Dana says he'll consider a superheavyweight division - Dana says he'll consider a show in Halifax - I think Dana will consider anything that these people ask about - Check that - he gives a definitive "HELL NO" to the idea of an open-air Calgary (McMahon Stadium) show - "I did one outdoor show in 11 years and it was in Abu Dhabi." - Dana confirms that Rampage/Shogun won't be on the Calgary card because Rampage needs knee surgery, but it was never planned for the card anyway - Question: "Can I have five minutes of your time following the press conference?" Dana says YUP because the girl who's asking is hot - Tickets will be restricted to probably 4 per buyer - GSP 'ad a considderashun of fighting Anderson Silva if everyt'ing goes like stars are aligned - Press conference ends with a Flames representative presenting Dana with Flames jerseys (the back says UFC with the number 149) and he's posing for pictures with the fighters; weakest "go Flames go" chant you ever did hear Promote this thread! | | CRZ

- Dana says he'll consider a superheavyweight division
Now that's ... not a good idea.
After stating definitively with the last two years that 265 would be the official company max, the dominant names in that division skirted that limit AND seemed to prove that bigger would not be better. Lesnar was that rare animal that could be heavy and move quickly.
Allowing a larger division at first blush seems geared only toward the Butterbeans and Nelsons who would be limited to haymakers and smothering ground moves. | KJames199

I think it's best to ignore most answers Dana gives at press conferences. He's big on using "I'll consider it" when he means "not a hope in hell."
EDITED to add that splitting the current heavyweight division into two weight classes would make up for some of the size mismatches that the division currently produces - not saying it's a good idea or a bad one, but that might have been what the person meant, rather than simply adding a 265+ division

Thoroughly entertaining recap either way. Hope you enjoy the show. | spf

I wonder if you split HW at 235 if you wouldn't see some of the LHW who don't think they can compete with the super big dudes right now deciding to move up. That might add some depth. | hansen9j

Innnnnnteresting... I might be able to swing this by bribing the wife with the Rider game in order to also go to UFC. (Yes, promising her that we'll go to a football game is a good thing in her eyes.
Also, I love Jason MacDonald so that would be cool too. | The Goon

| #9 Posted on 22.3.12 1952.00 Reposted on: 22.3.19 1953.19 | Interested to see who'll get the shot at Aldo. Aldo has said that Hioki feels he isn't ready for him and Hioki's bipolar performance history may mean he'll never be ready: the man dominated Marlon Sandro and followed that up by arguably losing to George Roop, he dominated Bartimus in round one, gave him round two, and then woke back up in round three of a fight that never should have gone to the cards. Jung and Poirier are tied up with each other, Hominick and Mendes just lost to him, Koch is tied down as well as not ready, and Edgar declined to drop down. Are they going to use a genie's lamp and wish for Pat Curran? | Oliver
