The Washington Post has an online article quoting WrestlingInc.com as saying TNA is reaching out to try to sign CM Punk.

(1) Seems like a no-brainer. They almost HAVE to at least ASK, right?
(2) Interesting that the Washington Post is starting to report more and more on pro wrestling stories. The reporter who C&Ps the info professes to be a rasslin fan, so I wonder if that's all it is.

These threads should always just start "Hey, Cubs, I read a site quoting another site about a wrestling thing, can you just grab the actual text from the Observer?"

I sure can.

For whatever this is worth, TNA, through an intermediary who is friends with C.M. Punk, made a play for him just like they did for Alberto Del Rio several weeks back. The idea pitched was a huge deal to be the top star of the company and money similar to Hogan, with the idea he could be their flagship guy and if he signed now, could help them broker a stronger television deal. Whether Punk would mean something at that level to a TV station that Hogan wouldn’t I guess would depend on the product knowledge of the station doing the talking. That’s where I thought the loss of Hogan was going to hurt, not so much in the bottom line, but if you have Hogan under contract to your company, perhaps the name would help in those talks. I’d think more than Punk, but again, Punk was the No. 2 guy in WWE for a while and has in some ways become a bigger star by disappearing. Punk expressed no interest in working in wrestling again.

1) TNA has to ask, but anyone who suggests to CM Punk that he should consider going TNA is not "his friend".
2) Yes, they'll give him free run of the place if he showed up, but so would any promotion at that level - or people who have money and would like to have a promotion.
3) the problems/environment which led TNA not making a whole lot of the last 20 ex-WWE names who showed up are all still there.
4) TNA reaching out to long shots in hopes of securing a better TV deal means they don't have a good TV deal in hand right now. Or maybe any TV deal.

Gotta say, it'd be pretty weird to see CM Punk in a TNA ring.

Cubs, you are an international treasure and I'm immediately doubling your pay.

You know where Punk should go? Resistance. Is that still a thing? (It LOOKS like it's still a thing (resistancepro.com).) I mean, it's a natural fit!

Looks like you're taking Carnegie lessons from CRZ. Good on ya! ;-)

Given that part of my post was also about the Washington Post publishing wrestling-related "news" online as of late, I thought the link I used -- and the way I phrased it -- was appropriate. Unless there's some hideously bad out-of-context reporting going on, it's all the same thing anyway.

Going to wager that this was a very one-sided "making a play" and that it is probably news to CM Punk.

I can't imagine TNA really thinks it can keep Punk happy enough to work for them on mutual terms. Even with full angle veto power or a guaranteed title run, this is PUNK. He's a grouch.

He could walk to the WWE right now and get (pretty much) whatever he asks for. They're dying for main-event talent (Kane, thanks for everything, but no). TNA can offer nothing the WWE can't in higher numbers. And it wouldn't be wise to go to TNA and slag the WWE week in and week out while his wife is working there.

TNA has Samoa Joe. Push THAT guy like he's Punk. We've only waited a decade for it. Save the Punk money for infrastructure.

Meanwhile, does Global Force make any hay for themselves by suggesting they'd welcome him too? Are they doing anything at all?

To be honest, I just assume I didn't even click the link to see how they phrased it. It's partly the dumbness (of the Washington Post, not you) crediting wrestlinginc.com with something they knew wasn't reported by wrestlinginc.com. And the other part is that where you assume they mostly get it close enough to right, I assume they mostly got a key part wrong. I realize now that neither thing probably matters a lot to most normal people. Me, I've been watching stuff I've reported first/only* be copy and pasted on other sites without credit back or be misreported by people not doing a good enough job of reading comprehension**, so it just hits a nerve when I see it happen elsewhere.

* - an unlikely turn of events, to say the least
** - hilarious/annoying irony: most often by the same Observer.

Your point about more sites covering wrestling suddenly is a good one. It's not just the Washington Post person. Forget the Grantland guy - I kind of have - but there's a weekly RAW recap on Rolling Stone's website. I have no idea why, it's so random. There was a beginners guide to WWE posted on the avclub a few weeks ago. Right now, a proper beginners guide should say: wait until January, and check back then, but that's not what it says. I would guess it points more to a greater freedom to post more niche-y content on mainstream sites in the search of anything that'll bring in more hits, but I'm not sure it's actually doing that much traffic. It's just strange.

Was WrestleLine just years ahead of it's time? (Nah.)

Interesting perspective, thanks. Even though I've been on this site for years, I honestly had no idea that you're one of the guys reporting stuff online. I can see why partial reports, misquotes, and lack of attribution would bother you.

Added to the list of oddities with reporting on wrestling -- Yahoo Sports seems to have started some agreement with SBNation, because I'm seeing a ton of their posts get linked as part of Yahoo Sports (for example, the links to other stories at the bottom of an article). For about two weeks they had at least one wrestling story per day (usually a rumor roundup), but about a week ago it just kinda died off. No idea why.

I'm thinking this is a Bischoff-like attempt to get attention on the company. They more than likely do not have the resources and they know CM Punk more than likely wouldn't even consider answering their calls if they made a real attempt to ask him.

He's been wrestling straight since he was a teenager and just retired at his mid 30's. Why go back into it this soon making less money on a sinking ship, when he could wait a year or two and sign a deal with WWE for limited appearances when he's healthy and ready?

Not only is Resistance Pro a thing, they have a show in Minneapolis tomorrow night. We should go!

Then again, can TNA give him the one thing he actually wants and put his face on an ice cream bar? That might do it.

I was ALMOST interested until I learned it was associated with the "Zombie Pub Crawl," which I will NEVER leave the house during because it's a godawful overhyped thing full of idiots - fortunately, there's NASCAR on tonight anyway

It is a thing, but it is apparently no longer a thing with a reality show in the works. http://www.prowrestling.com/amc-cancels-resistance-pro-reality-series-details/

Hmmm, eight episodes in the can....wouldn't it be brave/impossible of WWE Network to pick it up?
