Kobe and Vince said they would be in it this year, I guess they changed their minds. The Slam Dunk Contest is always one of those things I really don't like until it actually starts. When it is on TV, I really get into it.
Well, they are going to definitely keep it short this year with only 4 players.

Me for one...I think he'll actually win it if Steve Francis doesn't get the pity votes for being the shortest guy.

The last time a dunk contest made me care was when Dee Brown won with pump assisted no look dunk. Maybe the contest is, as Shannen Doherty said in "Heathers" about bulimia, is "so '87!" Hey, if Golddust is back then so is the use of movie quotes in all situations, darn it!

When I saw the list I thought the exact same thing, Gerald Wallace is a lot better than most people know. It would be nice to have more than 4 people, but I don't really care about the big stars like Kobe and Vince Carter (who sometimes don't even deserve to be there) being in it since they are already in the All Star game and can "showcase their talents" there.

i'm probably in the minority but we don't ALL get a kick out of watching the big name players dunk. I would care less if nobody ever dunked again. People should learn how to shoot and pass not just go up the court and dunk it every time.
Now the shoot out, that's a real competition, i'm hoping for a Peja Stojakovic/Mike Miller finals.

As a Sonics fan, I'll watch because of Desmond Mason. He is an awesome dunker and always puts on a show during pregame warm-ups. He's getting better as a player too. I think Richardson will take it though. | Evil Buddha

| #13 Posted on 12.2.02 0709.08 Reposted on: 12.2.09 0710.06 | Wilbon brought up a very interesting point on "PTI" last night... it's not a direct quote, but he basically said that the coolest part of the evening was the "Wheel" where the competitors had to recreate classic dunks from the jam legends like Dr. J and David Thompson. He went on to say if you're trying to provide excitement by bringing back recreations, then the dunk contest is so damn dead! Kill it. I tend to agree. The last dunk contest winner that got me excited was the Reebok pimping (I'm sorry, pumping) Dee Brown no-look. And that was, what, 1989 or '90? Put it in mothballs for a while, at least. | Quezzy

| #14 Posted on 12.2.02 0721.18 Reposted on: 12.2.09 0729.04 | Oh come on, we all know that Dee Brown could see when he dunked it, same for Ced Ceballos the next year. I agree with what Wilbon said though, the whole point of the slam dunk contest is to invent new stuff. However, under the rules they did have I think Wallace got gipped. Yeah Richardson's last dunk was good and all but Wallace nailed the Dr. J. dunk while Richardson wasn't even close. They were giving Wallace bad scores all night, I guess they were sick of Turkoglu and wanted him to shut up so they tried to bury his teammate.

If the dunk contest has to resort to those kinda gimmicks, though, yeah, it is better off dead. Now that competition featuring former NBA players playing with current NBA players, WNBA players and celebrities-- what was that called?--- THAT was cool. Awesome to see Magic Johnson, Moses Malone and Kenny Smith.
Could've cared less about seeing Sarunas Marciluionis. That's the best the Kings could come up with? Well, I suppose Oscar Robertson is too damn old anyway. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
