9/11/02 - Portrait of America

His name is Alan Linton, Jr. He is from Maryland where Cal Ripken Jr. is everyone’s hero. His friends gave him the nickname Iron Man after their local hero. In his freshman year of high school he joined the wrestling team and lost about every match. But he trained hard and made it to regionals the next year. Some say he could’ve won the state title his senior year if he hadn’t separated his shoulder. While injured he stayed with the team and mentored his younger brother Scott. Scott became another top high school wrestler. Alan’s never missing a day of work had paid off in the corporate world. He became an associate director at Sandler O’Neill & Partners at just 26 years old. He was on his way to becoming a Wall Street success. Once he got to the top he would give his money away to charity. He enjoyed watching the Redskins, the Ravens, and the WWF.

His name is David DiMeglio. He had just finished computer school when he turned 22. He was starting a computer consulting business. Apart from computers, he had a creative side. He enjoyed drawing pictures, writing rap songs, fixing motorcycles, and watching wrestling. He lived with his father in Boston. A year ago, he was travelling to help his mom move out of her appartment. He was on American Flight 11. After his death, Droz had expressed his condolences. He sent the DiMeglio family a message saying that the entire WWF was proud to have an impact in so many lives. He said the WWF had thought about them when they did a Thursday Memorial Show.

Her name is Rochelle Snell. She had stacks of foreign movies piled next to her VCR. Every week she would convince her sister Shala to watch these tapes with her. They were living together in a house in Mount Vernon, NY and were as close as two sisters could be. That night she was going to give her sister a present. But, first she made Shala promise to keep this gift a secret. She could have it after she promised not to tell anybody. The gift was two tickets to a WWF show at Madison Square Garden.

His name is Michael Mullin. He had just got season tickets to the New York Giants. These are the hottest tickets in town and he was thrilled to get them. He loved all kinds of sports; football, baseball, snowboarding, and wrestling. He also loved having a good time with his brothers. They always had a good time whether they were horsing around wrestling in the front yard or going drinking out at the local bars. He was living in Hoboken, NJ with his brother while he worked at Cantor Fitzgerald. He was 27 and had a lot to look forward to.

His name is Eduvigis Reyes, but all of his friends call him Eddie. He liked all the typical American male pastimes; beer, baseball, bowling, and wrestling. As a Met fan he would proudly wear his Met jersey and get into arguments with all the Yankee fans in the neighborhood. He was always pulling practical jokes on people and using his charm to get away with it. He’d call his Yankee friends and tell them that Jeter was just traded for Alomar. They got a kick out of that one. He had just started a new job with Rohde & Liesenfeld at the World Trade Center. He quickly made friends with all his co-workers. He didn’t even get in trouble when he wore his Met jacket to work in violation of the dress code. His favorite times were Thursday nights. He would bring home a ton of Chinese food to go with his case of Budweiser at 101st Street. Then he would call all his friends and tell them to come over and watch wrestling. He’d watch it with them and his three daughters. Since it was also payday, he didn’t mind paying for everyone’s food. He enjoyed their company. He was wearing the shirt he got from Wrestlemania 10 when he went to Madison Square Garden. He couldn’t wait for the next Wrestlemania to come back to MSG.

Vladimir Lenin once said, “When one man dies it is a tragedy. When one million men perish it is a statistic.” These five people were individuals. They were a father, a son, a sister, a brother, and an uncle. They were a country boy, an Italian-American, a Jamaican, an Irish-American, and a Hispanic American. They were Americans above all else. Their loss is our loss.

I’d like to think that today all five of these people are sitting on a big couch watching wrestling together. And I have just one request for Saint Peter. Get these guys a hot box so they can watch the Pay Per Views. We’ll cover the cost down here.
