Going back to the NASCAR thread, apparently the Olympics has decided that baseball and softball are not sports. The IOC is proposing eliminating these sports and replacing them with golf and rugby for 2008. They are also considering eliminating the pentathlon, Greco-Roman wrestling, and some of the walking events.

You know, I wouldn't mind seeing the elimination of baseball and softball if the IOC was trying to make a return to traditional Olympic sports. But with all the X-Games crap they got, and stuff like Beach Volleyball, and ball-room dancing, I just don't understand it. Especially when combined with the elimination of Greco-Roman wrestling (it doesn't get more traditional than that, I mean they've been doing that since 1896). I guess it has to do strictly with ratings.

BTW, apparently there is a third sport they are considering adding. Who knows, maybe it's auto racing! I still think it may be Monopoly.

Why ~RUGBY was not considered for an Olympic Sport already is beyond me. Second most violent sport I've ever played (lacross being the first), and very popular throughout the world. Personally, I'd keep Softball in there as well.

If they drop the Greco-Roman Art Form I'll serious think about not watching any events except other wrestling events. Seriously, I'd be that pissed off. When BALLROOM DANCING is considered more of a sport than A LEGIT COMBAT ART FORM I swear that will be ALL I watch, and I'll be boycotting the rest. PERIOD.

Did they actually say that baseball and softball are not sports, or did they just decide to eliminate those events from the olympic games?

They haven't actually said that, they're just talking about eliminating them. I heard the reason for baseball was the lack of professional players it has attracted.

Greco-Roman gave us Kurt Angle! It's been around since the ancient Olympics! How can they deprive us of such a godly event?! And how can you take away events that involve WALKING!?

And since when has ballroom dancing been considered an Olympic event?! Did I miss something 4 years ago? When did this happen?!

I don't mind them getting rid of baseball, even though it's my favorite sport. I've never thought of it as an Olympic event.

However, they should definitely weed out the crap like ballroom dancing, bridge, chess, etc. Why these are in there is beyond me.

Eliminating Greco-Roman wrestling from the Olympics is akin to getting rid of bats in baseball. This event doesn't go back to 1896...it goes back to the original Olympics!

The pentathlon is another one that is ridiculous to eliminate. It's one of the last pure athletic contests. Hell, the greatest athlete of the century, Jim Thorpe (officially confirmed by a Congressional resolution), competed in the pentathlon.

The Olympics in general have been watered down by the US-must-win-all-medals crap that started with the pros being allowed to play basketball.

They allowed the X games in so the US could win more medals, and they could'nt even always do that.

Bringing MLB players into the Olympics would make the event about as exciting as Basketball after the NBA got in. Gee, I wonder who's going to win?

well, if the NBA players keep showboating in the games, it won't be them winning. they nearly blew a few games last time around...

Ballroom dancing was a 'dark' tryout event at the last Olympics. It wasn't shown on TV and I think has been rejected, as well it should be. I hate stuff like skating and synchronised swimming which require marks for performance and presentation.

Just a check - is Ten Pin Bowling an Olympic Sport yet? It is apparently the national sport of Malaysia

In Baseball US dominance isnt such a foregone conclusion bro.... The Dominicans (Manny Ramirez, Sammy Sosa, Pedro and Vlad Guerrero) would give us hell. The Japanese too.

Antother reason the IOC wants Baseball (and softball) to go away is the Europeans have no interest in it. Only the Americas and the Asians really put time into it.

They haven't actually played chess and bridge yet, if I'm not mistaken, so I doubt they are ready to eliminate them.

I have to agree, baseball with MLB players would actually be a relatively even fight and would be extremely cool, but MLB has never shown any real interest in doing it. I betcha David Stern would make it happen if he were the MLB commish. He understands the value of marketing the sport internationally. But MLB's idea of marketing is "bitch about everything so that cities, the players, or whoever happens to be handy will feel sorry and give us money." It has probably never occurred to their public relations geniuses that increasing the number of people who enjoy baseball might help the business.

Gee, if they have golf, I wonder who's going to win :-)

Chess, Bridge, checkers, croquet and fishing were all sports during the 2nd or 3rd summer games. Football(as in American football) was a sport in 1932. Bowling was a demonstration sport back in 1988.

I think baseball would be VERY competative if MLB players were considered. The US, Canada, Mexico, the Dominican, Puerto Rico(yes they compete seperately), Japan, and South Korea would all put out respectable showings. And if Cuba was opened and the best Cuban guys were reunited with the ballplayers already here...good god.

EDIT: I originally said "duckpin bowling" which probably three-quarters of you have no idea what it is.

I saw duckpin bowling once on the old FNN/Score cable channel...it was followed by Professional Wrestling from Hawaii.
