I managed to get hold of a few tickets to see the ROH War of the Worlds show in Liverpool. Here's a quick rundown of the results and some of my observations:

Results

  • Kenny King d. Adam Page

  • Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero def. Mistico & Titan

  • Jay Lethal d. Josh Bodom

  • Bully Ray & The Briscoes d. Bushi, Evil and Tetsuya Naito

  • Mark Haskins d. Silas Young

  • Kushisa d. Takahashi, Marty Scrull & Dalton Castle to defend the ROH Television title

  • The Young Bucks d. The Addiction to defend the ROH Tag Team titles

  • Cody d. Sanada to defend the ROH World Title

Observations

I enjoyed the show. It has been (unbelievably) about ten years since I last saw ROH live. I was a bit disappointed by how much 'comedy' there was; it felt like every match was very much driven by it. It's a matter of taste but, after binging on the G1 Climax for the last few weeks, I definitely prefer the 'serious competitive' tone as opposed to 'sports entertainment'. The landscape has definitely moved in the last decade.

The CMLL crew really tore it up with the high spots. It made it a difficult act for Lethal and Bodom to follow. Lethal is such a great talent though, he was able to draw the crowd back in. I was really rooting for the NJPW boys to topple Bully Ray & The Briscoes. I sense that they were taking it (understandbly) a little easier tonight; I imagine that Naito and Evil are still pretty beat up from G1 Climax. Naito, the wrestler I'd come specifically to see,  was really over with the crowd. I was lucky enough to get a photo with the great man himself too!

It was good to see Kushida hold on to the TV title but most of the crowd wanted Dalton Castle to take this one. Sadly the finish came out of nowhere and fell a little flat on the crowd.

The crowd loved the Young Bucks.

Cody and Sanada gave us a solid main event.

Overall, it was a fun night out with my friends and an honour to meet some of the NJPW & ROH roster.
