Becky is our new Women's champ.
Rhyno/Heath our new tag champs over the Usos.
Miz won. Yawn.
Kane beat Bray after an Outtanowhere RKO from IRL injured Orton.
AJ Styles is our new Champ after a low blow/Styles Clash combo.

Yes, AJ Styles is a WWE Champion. Tomorrow, the dead rise from the dead. PPV of the year btw.

There ain't no team that I know that can defeat Heath and Rhyno!

Also, go AJ! (Though I also like Dean.)

Kane has no business beating Bray Wyatt, though.

The Results:
Baron Corbin defeated Apollo Crews (9:55)
Becky Lynch defeated Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Naomi, Natalya, and Nikki Bella to win the SmackDown Women's Championship (14:40)
The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) defeated The Hype Bros (Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder) to advance to the SmackDown Tag Championship match (10:11)
The Miz (c) defeated Dolph Ziggler to keep the WWE Intercontinental Championship (18:22)
Bray Wyatt defeated Randy Orton (kinda)
Kane defeated Bray Wyatt to No Holds Barred match (10:55)
Heath Slater and Rhyno defeated Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso to win the SmackDown Tag Title (10:02)
AJ Styles defeated Dean Ambrose (c) to win the SmackDown Championship (25:01)

I didn't see this show. I thought that was an OK given the lack of star power on this show - people were (fairly) comparing it to the worst WWE PPVs in recent memory when it came out that Orton wouldn't be wrestling. (Orton isn't cleared after the Brock match, apparently, and they did an injury angle to explain it and have the Kane match instead.)

It sounds like it worked out OK, at least for the the Twitter fanbase, because there was happy results in most of the big matches. AJ Styles is WWE Champion, which seemed deserved and also impossible two years ago. Heath Slater was given a joke loser character and did outstanding work to get himself over, and now he's tag team champion (at a team where they really need new stars too.) Becky's a well liked lass too. These titles don't really mean all that much when you stop to think about it, but people are willing to buy into it anyway when you give them results they want (see: Kevin Owens.)

I was expecting Great American Bash 2004, but it ended up being closer to No Way Out 2006.

This is Rhyno's first title in a decade, and I think his first tag title, period. I kinda wish a new guy had gotten to ride the Slater rocket, but, shucks, I have a soft spot for the ECW originals. Good for you, man beast.

Is it weird to say this was a really good PPV but also further proof that the brand split was a huge mistake?

Match for match, I liked (almost) everything on here primarily because it felt like everyone capable of it was putting full effort into things. The heel turn helped the Usos a ton, Miz worked very hard and had would I would probably consider one of his most enjoyable matches (and I don't mean that as a backhanded compliment), the back half of Styles/Ambrose was very hot and a great finish, all the right people won the title matches.

But...what else do you do with this roster? This is kind of not only the best PPV you could get out of it, but also maybe the only one?

You used all the women in one match (and Nikki vs. Becky feels like the only "real" singles PPV match for this roster until you build someone else up). Miz doesn't really have any next challengers for his belt, having already beaten Crews. Styles doesn't really have any next challengers for his belt if Orton is hurt, once Ambrose gets his rematch.

Wyatt is presumably the next biggest healthy, active "star" after Ambrose without a title, but he's a heel and (Orton interference aside), you just had him lose a match, in 2016, to Kane. And consider, had it not been Kane, your only replacements for Orton in that Wyatt match among healthy, active singles wrestlers were...Erick Rowan? And...Shane McMahon?

It's strange. Everybody worked hard (I did not see Corbin/Crews, so I'm leaving them out), but I still don't get why you'd hamstring them like this to begin with by doing the split (at all) or doing the split and leaving such obvious names like Zayn or Cesaro or even Big E over on the other show.

I thought it was a really good show filled with moments to set up Smackdown for some interesting stuff in the fall. The main event was great, tag title match was feel-good, Becky winning (finally) was awesome. They did all they could with Orton/Bray/Kane, even if it was the worst part of the show.

I do worry a bit about the timing of putting the belt on AJ now, unless their plan isn't to build to AJ vs Cena at WrestleMania. He doesn't have a lot of babyface opponents (I mean, I guess there's Kane), so I'm guessing he drops it to Cena at the Rumble.

Still, it's great that AJ won the REAL world title and that he did it less than a year into being in WWE. Whether it lasts or not, he'll always be in the top mix. You'll know he's really made it when Vince wants to move him to Raw.

Not weird at all. It's exactly the case. If they actually focused on the right talent when they were all on the same show, they'd be in a much better spot making a much better show.

I was thinking the same thing.

I was offline yesterday so didn't know the Randy Orton story - I assumed that he'd show up while the ref was counting him out and the match would be on. When Kane came out, I fast-forwarded through everything because Kane.

But thinking about it, who else do they have? The entire SD roster that wasn't a part of the show last night is Kalisto (injured?), Curt Hawkins (not debuted), Erick Rowan, Breezango, the Vaudvillains, and the Ascension. If Kalisto is hurt, there isn't even a throwaway match you can add to the PPV to pad the time.

Smackdown's midcard doesn't concern me as much. I kind of like that they don't have as many stars in the Women's or Tag divisions, because that sets the bar so low that anyone could win, allowing an environment for people to grow as they get title shots.

At least with the tag division, we know that American Alpha is coming back both for revenge on the Usos and eventually to win the tag titles. Slater/Rhyno will have to deal with that. They could even do a triple threat or any mix of those three teams for months.

As far as Miz goes, at least he's interesting, but yeah they need to figure him out soon.

One thing I really liked is that the show only went for approximately 2 hours & 40 minutes.

I have no problem with the brand-specific PPVs being shorter. Sometimes less is more.

I agree with this. It was a really good PPV. It goes to show that good booking and story-telling can help a show a lot. Compare that to SummerSlam, which had plenty of top flight performers having pretty good matches, but the booking was just a hot mess that dragged the show down.

I really enjoyed that women's match. I was really worried it was going to be terrible. Not because I'm not a fan of the women but a six-pack challenge is just a high degree of difficulty and the women don't have much practice. I imagine they all worked really hard to make that match work. It had good pacing, everybody got their moments to shine and I don't remember anybody botching any moves, which you couldn't say about a women's match with this many people a few years ago.

Kane? Ugh. They could have at least thrown Rowan out there to get revenge on being booted from the Wyatt Family and give the rub to somebody new. Who knows, maybe you can work the Slater magic on Rowan.

But yeah, how long can the writers prop up this show before the thin roster does them in? When one injury leads to Kane getting a victory you're in trouble (it didn't help that they took American Alpha out with an injury angle). Raw is also getting TEN new guys for their Cruiserweight Division! They have to give Smackdown somebody.

Fantasy booking wish: Cesaro wins the Best of 7 and gets his "Championship Opportunity". They tell him he can have a shot at any title and he chooses to challenge Styles instead of Owens.

imagine where WWE would be if Styles had gone to NXT and just defeated Samoa Joe for the NXT title at Takeover. instead dude has already locked up the prestigious Superstar of the Year Slammy. you'd think a promotion with Styles and Owens as its champions would be more fun, but nevertheless, what a world. (and what a universe.)

"Rollins' vacated title was held up until the Royal Rumble and then Ambrose eliminated Triple H to win the Rumble and then Ambrose (w/ Shane McMahon) defeated HHH (w/ Vince and Stephanie) at Wrestlemania to give Shane control of the company" is one of those things I'm just going to have to pretend after the fact.

fairly hilar that the stench of Roman can get the Usos turned heel but not hisself.

I like this. I picture Owens in the background, torn between being happy he doesn't have to face Cesaro but also insulted that Cesaro wouldn't want his title, possibly cradling his title and saying "...but mine is red" to a consoling Jericho.

There would also be lovely symmetry in Stephanie McMahon standing in the parking lot in shock as (former Paul Heyman client) Cesaro gets into a limo with a SmackDown GM EXACTLY* 15 years after Stephanie and her limo stole Heyman and Brock Lesnar from Raw.

*Not exactly, it would be EXACTLY** 14 years later, but 15 is a cooler number.

Not going to lie, I loved (most) of this show. SD has been the runaway champ of the two shows, despite the limited roster, but I think that helps. We only had I think it was six matches, most of which were given time which helped.

I loved, loved the womens match. Every woman came out of it looking better. Also I finally fell in love with Alexa Bliss like everybody else had. Glad to see Becky get her moment. Carmella is actually pretty awesome as a heel, it is working for her.

The tag matches were mostly just there, the Usos are much better heels. If you can't be happy for Heath (and vote for Rhyno), I don't know what your problem is.

I had not heard about Orton being out, so seeing him beaten down backstage was not something I enjoyed (and I'm not an Orton fan, but I knew the alternative was most definitely Kane). My one complaint about the show... Orton out, AA being written out... I was scared they were going to write Heath out somehow with the squirts. It's a limited roster, you can't write all the good guys out.

I turned off the app the moment Kane appeared. I like the guy, but no. And Bray STILL didn't get a win. I am pretty sure Zack Ryder has won more PPV matches than Bray in 2016.

I really liked this show! I went in to it expecting to turn it into background noise by 9:00 but found myself more and more engrossed in the whole thing. It felt like things had time, things happened for reasons, and the work was mostly good to great.

Corbin-Crews turned into a really good match. Like, way better than it had any right to be. They had good chemistry in NXT so it makes sense it carried over to here but man, it still surprised me.

Alexa Bliss is quickly becoming my favorite female superstar. Her in ring reactions are top notch and her work is decent and could get better if she has the right opponents. I also loved the Harley Quinn look. I was sad she was eliminated first. The match was very good until the huge botch by Naomi and Nattie. Woof, that was bad.

I like where Miz is and where he's going. He's making that title mean something, and it should because it's the IC title. It's lineage is more impressive than the names listed by texasranger9. I have no clue who he faces next.

Evil Usos are my favorite Usos. They need new entrance graphics and video.

ONE MAN BAND BAAAYBAAAAAY! Slater is awesome. Rhyno is also surprisingly excellent in his role.

The reason why they can't recreate Slater with Rowan is because Slater has much more charisma and ability. I was actually hoping for a returning Luke Harper to be the non-sensical opponent. Kane. Death, taxes, Bray Wyatt eating pins.

I know Mojo is a big dumb bro but man, he's one hell of a hot tag. He also seems like a good guy from the Breaking Ground stuff they showed of him. I like their team. They're most likely at their ceiling but there's nothing wrong with that.

AJ. Fucking. Styles. We live in a world where the three major mens titles are held by Kevin Owens, AJ Styles, and Shinsuke Nakamura. Again, no clue who he faces after Ambrose but it doesn't matter; unless it's Jericho, I don't think he's capable of a bad match anymore.

Is the smaller roster really so bad though? Splitting the women's division into pairings with a Becky vs Natalya/Bliss and continuing the Nikki/Carmella program doubles the amount of time the women get (in theory).

Slater/Rhyno can have numerous matches with hi jinks vs Breezango and Vaudvillains. Their ad-hoc nature might even make the Ascension going up against them believable. Meanwhile the Usos will have to deal with the returning American Alpha.

Cena is supposed to be back for the next title feud against Styles and then gone again. But you still have Ambrose and Bray in that upper echelon too. Styles is "unproven" against many WWE stalwarts such as Kane, Orton and Show as much as we might all dread that as well...

And the midcard just needs to figure out how to even out Miz, Ziggler, Corbin and Crews and when Harper comes back even Rowan can fit in there too.

Really Smackdown has enough talent to go through at least 3 PVP cycles right now without having to recycle too much. Let's not forget that it's only a 2 hour show not 3, and they in theory are the show giving more wrestling so there's going to be less segments per show.

Just whatever you do Smackdown, don't move Swagger over. Geh.

I really like the "Cesaro opts to Smackdown for his title opportunity" storyline. Hell, you could even do this with Sheamus too since Styles is getting some respect face heat anyways.

There's bound to be a Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown match at Survivor Series, so "steal five superstars from the other show" could be the stakes or something to properly even out the rosters.

This is important. The WWE title is the "real" title. The Universal belt is basically in WCW International Title country for me, and I'll always consider it as a secondary championship. It's very cool that Styles got himself a place in the major lineage, Mr. 48.
