In the not too distant future, the immortal warmonger Vandal Savage has conquered the planet. In the year 2166, Time Master Rip Hunter appeals to rest of the Time Masters Council (whose job is to protect the timeline in an age where time travel is possible) to allow him to travel back in time to recruit a team to hunt down and try to stop Vandal Savage’s reign of terror before it could take effect. Or at least that’s how Rip presents his case. Turns out that Vandal Savage also murdered his wife and son. So, he’s also motivated by good ol’ fashioned revenge. Next thing we know, Rip takes off in his time traveling ship, the Waverider, to begin his recruiting, leading us to believe that his appeal was successful. We find out later it wasn’t, and that Rip went rogue. This causes the Council to send their enforcer, Chronos, to hunt down and try to stop Rip’s meddling with the timeline before he does irreparable damage. The very existence of the Council implies that one *could* do irreparable damage to the timeline. And maybe it’s Rip’s as-yet-unseen actions that cause the need for the creation of the Council in the first place. Hmm.

Rip recruits eight from the year 2016. His pitch is basically this: since none of these folks know anything about real-life time travel, Rip plays the fate card by saying they were meant to take down Vandal Savage and become Legends in Rip’s time. The allure of status is enough to convince some of them to join up right then and there. (Quick aside: This recruiting scene takes place within the first ten minutes of the episode. There was so much overacting and the dialogue was SO cheesy that I almost gave up. Glad I made it through. I want this to be a must-see show for me.)

-The Atom is dismayed at how little his life’s work has mattered to the world, so the opportunity to *save the world*(and earn proper recognition) cannot be passed up.

-Firestorm’s “brains” half, physicist Dr. Stein, is like a kid in a candy store who jumps at the exciting and wondrous prospect of time traveling, while the other half, actual kid Jax Jackson was a little more cautious and hesitant. Really, shouldn’t the high school student be more excited and eager to jump in and the *physicist* be more hesitant, skeptical and inquisitive around time travel? The two book-smartest people of the group were the most eager to join without regard for consequence.

-Criminals Captain Cold and Heat Wave have no interest in being heroes, but relish the opportunity to become super-thieves during times when crime-fighting technology was primitive.

-Following Sara Lance’s resurrection in the Lazarus Pit, a certain darkness has consumed her. She is lost in life. A pep-talk from her sister, the current Black Canary, and a gift of the maskless White Canary costume changes her perspective and provides her hope that she could find meaning in Rip’s call to arms by being a hero.

-Hawkgirl and Hawkman are the most connected to Vandal Savage (and have the most to gain by joining the cause), since their origins occurred during the same incident many, many years ago in ancient Egypt. This incident created an endless cycle of murder and reincarnation and bonds the three for eternity. The solution to stopping Savage is undoubtedly found in undoing the effects of this incident.

After all eight agree to Rip’s proposal, the newly-formed team travels to 1975 to question, ahem, the world’s foremost expert on Vandal Savage (!), Dr. Aldus Boardman, about where Savage might be found. Rip explains this interaction will be harmless to the timeline, since they are going to meet Boardman one day before he dies. Because of this, Boardman having met real-life time travelers will be inconsequential and have no ill effects on the timeline. This is important later. Boardman knows ALL about Savage...because he is the son of previous incarnations of the Hawks. While Boardman is providing an intelligence dump, the Time Council enforcer Chronus pursues and attacks the Waverider. The team manages to escape. They have Boardman with them, who is shot during the chaos.

Rip is able to park the Waverider in a “temporal zone” to repair damage to the ship while remaining undetected by the Council. It is here that Rip is forced to reveal why Chronos is pursuing them and that the reason he selected these eight people to muck around in the timeline is...because they are inconsequential. They are not future Legends. They’re insignificant enough that Time wouldn’t care what they do. The eight are understandably pissed and most want out. It’s Sara who keeps the team together by reasoning that if they are able to stop Vandal Savage (who is NOT inconsequential), they can make themselves anything they want to be, including Legends. Meanwhile, Boardman dies from his wounds (is his death Lost-style Course Correction or Lost-style Whatever Happened, Happened?), further bonding the eight in purpose. Boardman’s intel is going to send the group to Norway during the same year, where we see Savage happily pondering the effects of his newly-acquired nuclear warhead.

The beginning is so Doctor Who and while it could a giant wink to Darvill's past, it is also annoying. Why wouldn't a council of humans not decide to stop a mad man from taking over the planet and allowing Savage to eventually get that power to time travel if it is available now. Unless, Savage already has that power and that is why Rip gets the no. That is not As for the rest, its not bad.

I do like the lie Rip tells them about Legends. Unless, the reason they are so insignificant, because they jumped out of the time stream. Its too much thinking of time travel makes my head hurt and will probably ultimately fuck the show.

I love Sarah. So, I am going to be watching for this Cold, Stein and Atom. I am not sold on the Hawks. There is something very wooden about the both of them even though stopping Savage apparently revolves around them. Heatwave is there to die to come way for Constantine.

Because if there's one thing we know from time travel shows, it's that most masters of time are huge dicks.

That being said, I loved the episode (and the show) - I can't wait for part two. Sara Lance will forever be the best, though I hate how they basically just said "haha, who cares" about her relationship with Nyssa.

Nyssa's love for Sara was unrequited emotionally so not so much a relationship as it is history. There's still time for her to show up and tie that loose end up too.

That was interesting way to go with episode 2. I figured with the cast that someone was going to be killed off by the first season, did not see Hawkman being that guy. Heatwave was my pick who has been awesome. Honestly, the character interaction is fine, its the weak plot that is the problem. Savage is Bowser from Mario Brothers. He might as well say Your Princess is in another castle when they kill him. Sarah stealing the pot and macking on young Martin was great.
