But...TNA has appeared to just about die or been in grave trouble for just about every year it's existed, and it just keeps existing. They're the most rickety major league promotion to go a decade and a half. It's easy to believe they'll somehow keep shuffling on forever until someone finally admits they're done.
I was right! TNA is leaving Destination America, but is not dying - they're moving to POP TV, the channel you may vaguely recall as the old TV Guide channel. They're airing Tuesday nights starting on January 5.. They replace Paragon Pro on the channel.
MVP, who has a few axes to grind with TNA, is strongly hinting TNA is paying to be on the channel. This seems impossible given the only way TNA was generating income was from their TV deal, but nothing is impossible when it comes to TNA.
I was wrong also. TNA is not a major league promotion at this point. Paragon was a (Las Vegas?) indie which was paying to be on TV and no one took seriously as a big league group when they were on this station. It shouldn't be different for TNA. People are going to treat TNA like a major league promotion because they were at one point, but now they're just one of hundred small groups trying to make ends meet (and maybe not doing as good a job as others.) There's not going to ever be a spectacular end for TNA, they're just going to keep getting smaller until they vanish without anyone noticing. That's disappointing.
The other thing is - between this story and ROH starting up on Comet (a channel you could get but you almost definitely need an antenna and a knowledge of sub channels to get) is the idea that "it's hard to get wrestling on TV" is totally false. It's very easy to get on TV, if you're willing to be on any TV which will have you. It's the difference between "any TV" and "a TV channel that will actually help your business" which is massive, and getting even bigger with every station added. | Promote this thread! |             | andy1278

They're also not forcing any dead brother storylines ... But their countdown clock that varied by time zone and then broke was classic TNA and pretty much sums up their existence. I'm all for having as much pro wrestling on tv as possible, just not these guys anymore. The surprising thing to me is that a show like ROH, with a lot more talent, bombed even worse.

As Andy implies, this is a weird place for a wrestling show. It's mostly pop-culture oriented and seems to lean more female. I'll occasionally watch an old Celebrity Name Game there, and I tried the acapella reality show they were running once, but found it distressingly low on music and high on stupidity. I think they did run Jericho for a while (the show, not the wrestler), which at least a little more fits. | Tenken347

For me, the issue was that the wrestling was (mostly) fine or better, but the actual show itself was pretty terrible. Like, they just didn't have the right sense of how to show wrestling on television, and the sport-focused stuff that RoH does doesn't play super well all on it's own for an entire hour. That last point is a good one. NJPW on AXS has done a pretty wonderful job of parceling out info on who everybody is, how they relate to each other and to stars from the past and tying it all together to the current (which is to say last year's) feuds. As someone watching it weekly, I'd like them to know I'm good about the New Three Musketeers talking point by now, and the non-Ibushi juniors got largely ignored until about this month (I suspect this may have something to do with the crowds?), but I'd say they've done an amazing job of filling in the gap I had between the late '90s stuff I knew and today, which is pretty extraordinary.
A lot of that comes from putting in those taped introductions where you get to actually hear the wrestlers talk, and especially the post-match press conference bits (why, why, why, did WWE bail on doing those from the early days of The Network?). I don't imagine I'd love Nakamura or Suzuki half as much as I currently do without getting to hear them sell their characters in and out of the ring. (I'm hoping Suzuki's pragmatic press conference about refusing to accept he was out of the G1 Tournament because "everybody else might get food poisoning" got the 2014 promo of the year consideration it deserved.) | thecubsfan

I'm about 2 months behind on NJPW on AXS, but this is by far my best part of the show. I'm great amused every time a loser is so devastated - emotionally more than physically! - that they conduct an interview on their hands and knees or just laying on the ground. Tanahashi yelling out things that are translated but could use another pass is great. | Dr Unlikely

Yeah, the guys who crawl to/out of the backstage press conferences are the best, especially when juxtaposed with those same guys in, like, nice sweaters doing the pre-taped interviews from the NJPW equivalent of Titan Towers. It's also kinda funny to see the non-Japan guys who seem initially perplexed by the format until they realize "oh, OK, so exactly like a post playoff-game press conference."
(I'm kinda fascinated by Tanahashi, who really comes off like if WCW Jericho had been given the "Arrogant Face Who Can Never Lose" gimmick/push Cena has.) | OndaGrande

From my POV, issues with TNA have never really been with the abilities of the talent, just the creative direction of the product. I can see though the point other people are making about ROH's character development not making itself more appealing to viewers who don't diehard follow indy wrestling and already know who workers are and what they're all about. It's a difficult balance to try to present a more wrestling oriented product but still try to play to a broader audience of fans who could be watching Vin Diesel movies, the Kardashians or Ridiculousness. | JustinShapiro
