So was this their plan all along? Or were they not happy with Hammond's portrayal?

Huh. I guess one of those ads came on a little while ago. I was on the computer with a Simpsons rerun playing in the other room. And I recognized McDonald's voice, and I was thinking, I thought it was the OTHER guy from SNL. So they actually changed it. Weird.
I'm not sure why you want a recognizable guy playing your already-well-established mascot character to begin with....

I really hope these commercials are just Norm McDonald, in full Colonel Sanders garb, just being Norm. "Hey, eh... buy some chicken. Its fried! In Kentucky, or ehh, somethin'."
I thought Hammond was perfectly serviceable. Now, I kinda want to see all the SNL alums get a turn.
Edit: Now that I've written that out, that's Norm doing Letterman, isn't it? I'd be fine with Norm just doing different impressions while dressed as the Colonel.

my son and I were positing that they will change Colonels every quarter or so and go through the SNL Alum and perhaps other Celebs. My son waits for Will Farrell (but also hopes for Jimmy Fallon) while I hope for Adam Sandler. But I am also hoping for Kristen Wiig and Keanan Thompson. (and off choices such as Hulk Hogan or Keith Richards - hey, they have been on SNL)
But who is the final Colonel?
Possible finals: Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase - all older guys who aren't otherwise busy

This was also my guess. Also makes me feel less sorry for Darrell Hammond for doing KFC commercials dressed up as the Colonel.
SIDE NOTE: This post is easily the first time I have had to worry about the spelling of "Colonel" since at least the 1990's. I wonder how many more decades I can go without having to type it again?

Such a shame that Charles Rocket is no longer alive to do it. Just offhandedly refer to "Kentucky Fuckin' Chicken", and the Colonel is never heard from again....
Love the idea of having increasingly un-Colonel-like SNL alums do it.

Why bother getting names like that if they are unrecognizable in all the makeup? It's like paying Tom Cruise to play Santa Claus.
I thought Darrell Hammond was fine. My son even played him on the WAZE app. saying "turn right" and "Hazard ahead - a least it's not a giant robot chicken."

I dunno about you, but within five seconds of the new commercial coming on I said "Hey, that's Norm MacDonald -- I wonder what happened to Darrell Hammond?" I thought both were recognizable.
At the least, I bet people will say "Hey, where do I know that voice from?" and Google it, which provides even more exposure for KFC when they read an article about the commercials and the brand.

He kinda vocally transforms from Norm into the Colonel here:
Then there's this:
I'm not a big fan of super self-awareness in commercials, but KFC has had about a decade of the most godawful ads (AND SO MANY OF THEM SO MANY TIMES) on the sportscasts I enjoy live that these are almost bearable by comparison. I haven't been to a KFC since my experimental purchase of a Double Down but I'm ALMOST ready to hit their lunch buffet... right after I'm tired of losing weight. But... I may never get tired of losing weight, so it's a tough call.
I also think there's probably a larger plan at work here and all will become clear by, say, the Super Bowl.
