My 19 year old son and I traveled down to Portland, Maine to see a concert on the Maine State Pier on Friday night. It was a beautiful evening for a show, too.

The opening act was The Front Bottoms, who my son was dying to see. They did not disappoint as they are a four man outfit that is hard to pigeon-hole. There is a little Cake to them, but they are more dissonant than that. The drummer (Mathew Uychich) has long drummer hair and plays like a maniac. The lead singer/guitarist is Brian Sella and he is quirky and funny and has a very interesting voice, while the bassist (Tommy Warren) is a tall thin dude who has the punk pogo dancing bass player thing down pat. The fourth guy (Ciaran O’Donnell) plays guitar, keyboards and trumpet (sometimes at the same time). They played about 7-8 songs and the crowd in the front had come to see them and not Weezer. Highlights were Au revoir (Adios), Flashlight and Maps. Also, during the Weezer portion, O'Donnell was walking back through the crowd and spent a few minutes talking to my son, though he was pretty well into a few beers by then, it was still pretty nice of him.

After a short break while we watched the crew switch over to Weezer’s setup, the main attraction took the stage.

Weezer was outstanding. I was amazed by this point at the amount of beer people drank. $6 for 12 ounces of Budlight. Ugh. There were many people who spent $66 to get in and another $60 on beer and had no idea where they were!

We were only about 50 feet back from the stage and a little to the side, so we had a great view and the weather was perfect.

Pat Wilson the drummer wasn’t there so they had a fill-in but didn’t say why. You could tell a little on a couple songs. The fill-in guy (Anthony something?) was perfectly adequate, but still.

Anyway, Rivers came out and just started singing and didn’t interact with the crowd until about 4 songs in and then they were all pretty into it.

They started with My Name is Jonas (I had guessed Back to the Shack from the newest album). They had said they were playing the whole new album in some concerts but played only Back to the Shack and Go Away from the new one. It was mostly a greatest hits show and it was so cool.

Say it Ain’t So
Undone – The Sweater Song
Surf Wax America
All from the blue album and they mixed in:
Beverly Hills
Pork and Beans
Island in the Sun
El Scorcho
And some others I am sure I forgetting

For the encore they did If You’re Wondering and Buddy Holly.

I am too old to be going to these shows anymore, but my soon to be 20 year old son wanted to go see a show with me and my wife said I would be crazy to not go. Soon he won’t want to be seen with an old geezer.

Anyway, since I have been reading James’ SLCRs I thought I would put one up too.
