It's a rarity for me, but I wasn't able to sleep tonight.

I tried everything short of drugs: Warm milk, counting, got up and watches some TV, read a little, took a warm shower.

Got any tricks

I play sudoku or a logic puzzle on my iPad. The puzzles take my mind off thinking about "I can get X hours of sleep if I fall asleep RIGHT NOW." Sometimes a small snack helps too.

Same thing every night: 100 mg Trazodone, 10 mg Ambien, 1 mg Lorazepam.

Sometimes music with headphones to crowd out the bad thoughts, like the mental image of StaggerLee masturbating.

Hot shower (just south of unbearable) and, after, camomile tea or hot water with lemon.

But these days, I'm so used to operating on so little sleep that I normally just suffer through the day. Not a solution, but hey...

Don't watch anything new or something that you haven't seen. Go with a classic that you know all the lines too.

I usually pull out Hook, Clueless or Basketball Diaries. Don't judge me, I know those movies back and forth and can watch them anytime. When I need to get some sleep though, they go on the boob tube.

I read some insomnia tip a long time ago from somewhere on the Internet. It has something to do with reducing the stimulation of an over stimulated mind. Since you know the movie it shuts down something somewhere in the cerebellum or the cerebral cortex (making that up). Thing is, it works for me.

I've yet to make it all the way though my movies when I approach them with that insomnia defense.

Worth a try. If all else fails try StaggerLee's approach.....if you hadn't already.

Yeah, the fan helps big time. Also, tv, but not something you want to get sucked into. I turn on the Weather Channel and turn the volume down so you can barely make out what they are talking about. After the second Local On The 8's, you'll blank out cuz it's time to repeat what they were talking about.

In my 40s - I have a 16 month old baby. It's impossible for me to not be able to fall asleep. But if I needed to I would probably read.

I sometimes have trouble falling asleep, and this came across my Facebook feed so I thought I'd give it a shot.

It's called the 4-7-8 breathing method.


Although you can do the exercise in any position, it’s recommended to sit with your back straight while learning the exercise. Weil explains to “place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth and keep it there through the entire exercise. You will be exhaling through your mouth around your tongue; try pursing your lips slightly if this seems awkward.” This is followed by the five-step procedure listed below:

Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.

Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.

Hold your breath for a count of seven.

Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.

This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.

Weil emphasizes the most important part of this process is holding your breath for eight seconds. This is because keeping the breath in will allow oxygen to fill your lungs and then circulate throughout the body. It is this that produces a relaxing effect in the body.

Is there any science to this? Beats me, but I know that it has worked for me. I think it's probably closer to meditation.

When I was younger, it was listening to the news on the radio. Not the greatest idea in hindsight due to the negative stories aired much of the time but the repetitiveness of the stories every 20-30 minutes worked well for me.

These days, it's watching TV, in particular the subchannels like Antenna TV with old time TV shows like the Jack Benny program. I feel it's a good show to watch and enjoy while gradually relaxing you to the point of sleeping.

Old episodes of MST3K on DVD. Works to keep my mind distracted so I can not think of 100 different things that would keep me awake. I do occasionally pop in a movie I have seen plenty of times as well. They stay in rotation for about a week.

I listen to wrestling podcasts. Specifically, shows where they review old events tend to be really good for nodding off to. When I had to force myself to fall asleep during the mornings when I worked nights, I would have on repeat the episodes of Joe vs the World featuring our own Justin Shapiro talking about the WWF in the 90s. Review a Wai is another great show due to the hosts having a very tranquil delivery.

I saw a lifehack that if you keep thinking about things write or type the thoughts out. They'll be out of your head and you mind will slow down.

I don't know if ASMR is a real thing or not, but the videos are really soothing and surprisingly intimate. I'd recommend them too.
