Reposted on: 4.6.22 0854.49 | Okay, first thing's first: Last night was also the first night of Ring of Honor appearing on Destination America. I would have had a real dilemma if I couldn't watch NXT pretty much whenever I wanted, but since that's the world we live in (for the record, I'm a pretty big fan of the Network as a concept and as a service), I was able to watch both. I'll let somebody else do a ROH thread if they want, but I thought it was a pretty good show. I didn't fall in love immediately or anything, but it's probably worth checking out if you're into this sort of thing.
Anyhoo, this sort of thing! We've got a big show on NXT, and it kicks off with a recap of KO's big win at the Elimination Chamber. My favorite part is where they have to cut wide on him because he starts to tear up over the biggest win of his career, totally killing his vibe as a tough-guy killer. KO himself does not grace us with his presence, and it's becoming increasingly clear that his time in NXT is coming to an end. That's a shame for us, but good for him. Instead, we go right to the ring. Tyler Breeze has a match with Adam Rose (whose time on RAW seems to be coming to an end). You may remember that they tagged a few weeks ago, and after they won, Rose's reward was a Supermodel Kick. Rose is looking quite a bit more serious here, and the crowd is chanting "We want Krueger," forgetting that when he was Leo Krueger, nobody wanted Krueger. He starts off with some hard chops, and hits a very nice springboard dropkick. They take this one out of the ring, then back into the ring, and then out of the ring again, but nobody goes for any big dive spots. Breeze hits a hurricanrana and rolls into some very hard punches. I love the punches down here, and I swear that in the last six months or so, the guys punching on RAW have gotten better at it too. Rose's response is a big spinebuster that he rolls through into a Boston Crab, but it's not enough. Breeze counters a rope run spot with the Beauty Shot, and that's all she wrote.
Match Rating: This One Was Actually Party Time, All The Time.
Backstage, Solomon Crowe doesn't regret the complete assbeating that Kevin Owens gave him last week, but thanks Samoa Joe for bailing him out. He says he'll be back in the ring again soon. Is he going out for something?
A video package lets us know that Dana Brooke (uggh) is going to be competing in the Arnold Classic in Spain after a successful prelim round in Rio. She's going to be gone from NXT for a little while. Oh no Dana come back.
We come back to ringside, where Eva Marie!? is out. She says (once she can get the crowd to stop booing her long enough to speak - it takes a while) that she want to compete in the ring with the women of NXT!? Wait, that can't be right, let me check that again. No, that's actually what she said! Oh no, Dana Brooke, please come back! I didn't mean it, you're just fine! Trade back! Trade back!
Really, a lot of Eva Marie's problems aren't her fault. She's an actress on Total Divas, not an actual wrestler. But that reaction from the NXT crowd was fucking gruesome (I think she was actually on the verge of tears), and it's not going to get better for her down here.
We go from this disaster to a press conference from GM Regal. On July 4, WWE's putting on another special with all their top stars, live from Tokyo, Japan. They asked Regal if he wanted an NXT match to go with it, and he was like, "nah, who'd want to see that." No, of course Regal put in Finn Balor vs. Kevin Owens for the NXT title. You heard it here first: Put all your money on Balor, because KO is RAW full-time now. It should still be a phenomenal match.
Our next match is the Alexa Bliss/Carmella showdown they promised us last week. Carmella stars off with a trio of Thesz presses to show us she means business. She is slooooowly improving over the months, which does give me some hope for Dana Brooke. None really for Eva Marie. Anyhoo, this is a pretty formulaic match-up, all told, and since Alexa Bliss really has no business losing to Carmella, she beats her with a roll-up, unnecessarily grabbing the ropes to remind us that she's a heel now.
Match Rating: Formula Can Be Fine.
Were you wondering about Sami Zayn's surgery? Don't lie, of course you were. They shot some footage of him before, during, and afterwards. Evidently, the injury was a little worse than they thought, with a partially torn rotator cuff as well as the expected joint trouble, but it was a pretty quick surgery, the prognosis is very good, and Sami should be back sooner rather than later. They don't tell us how good, exactly, but the indication seemed to be that we should expect him back well before Hideo Itami.
Returning to action, the Vaudvillains! I fucking love these guys! It's been a while since we've last seen them, but they're still everything you remember. Except for Aiden English, who is somehow even more muscular than before. He's running out of places to put muscles. They're squaring off with Jason Jordan and his promised perfect tag-team partner Marcus Louis. Not going to lie, that was not my first guess. I don't mind though, because I also love Marcus and his monster-man routine. The Vaudvillains get the early offense with a cool double-punch spot (Dukes Up!), but then Jordan and Louis start placing Aiden English firmly in peril. Louis does this weird jaw-lock thing that actually looks really uncomfortable. They grind him down, but eventually he's able to hit a desperation jawbreaker and make the tag. Gotch is the proverbial house afire. He drops his strap to show he means business, and then they hit the Whirling Dervish to pick up a win in their big return.
Match Rating: I Missed All Of These Guys (Except Jason Jordan, Who Never Really Left).
Next is a Sasha Banks package, the only highlight of which is some very old footage of her original look. It was a smart change.
Finn Balor is looking forward to fighting Kevin Owens. He made his name and his career in Japan, and on the 4th he's bringing the demon. Well, I should hope so - he didn't do so great without it the last time.
Our main event is Finn Balor against Rhyno. It's a classic technique vs. power match. Mostly standard stuff, Danger Zone dive, Rhyno spinebuster, pele kick, slingblade, knockback dropkick. Finish is the Coup de Grace missing, followed by the Gore missing, followed by Balor rolling up Rhyno for the win.
Match Rating: On Your Way To Fight Kevin Owens, Be Sure To Beat Rhyno.
Afterward, Finn's up on the ramp celebrating, we're going to close out, and RHYNO RUNS THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE STAGE AND GORES THE EVERLOVING SHIT OUT OF BALOR. I had to wind that back and watch it twice. Rhyno kills him dead here. I guess we know what's going to be keeping Finn busy until the 4th.
Good, breezy show tonight. My completely unbiased opinion is that it killed the debut ROH episode, but again, since we live in a world where we don't have to make that choice, check them both out. Maybe Lucha Underground too. Is anybody still watching TNA? Holy shit, how much wrestling can you cram into a Wednesday night? Doesn't anybody work on Thursdays? It blows when this happens because I didn't pay to see these jerkoffs get themselves off, and it was really disrespectful to the guys working in the ring. I'm not saying everything in the ring was good, it wasn't but chanting whatever pops in your head, loud "funny" comments and trying to start a wave mid match is shitty.
Chanting you can't wrestle at Eva Marie serves what purpose? NXT is a developmental promotion. How is anyone ever going to develop if the crowd shits on everything that isn't an Indy dream match? How do people know she will never get better? Maria couldn't do anything for years and she turned into one of the best seconds in wrestling. #givedivasachance, ha.
Wrestling crowds have really started to annoy me as I get older. I'm sure most of them are alright people and are having their good time ruined too, but there are more and more shitty I'm smarter than you guys showing up, and I've noticed it more since NXT went main stream. It's actually going to be a problem WWE is going to have to figure out. How do you develop guys when everyone just wants to see your five star Indy guys?

I'm glad to see that she's been working on her fundamentals, but it's still pretty hard for me to call what I'm feeling anticipation. Eva Marie has never really wrestled before now, and she's still not a very interesting personality. I think they might have thrown her out to that hostile crowd just to see how she did, and the answer was "not great." I think we're guilty of forgetting that there is a level below NXT - the Performance Center. NXT is made up of the people who are ready to be on a tv wrestling show. Dana Brooke, for example, isn't ready yet (although I get why they want to take advantage of her performance in the Arnold Classic). If Eva Marie's improved to the point where she's ready, she's got a lot of ill will to get past first, but if she is ready, a couple of good matches will be all it takes. | CRZ

Reposted on: 4.6.22 1316.12 | My problem with Eva Marie is the personality issue. Not going to lie, I wouldn't mind looking at her all day long. Personality-wise, though, she's shown nothing. She's like a robot, complete with hair and skin that looks like it is photoshopped even when it is live video. Wrestling ability is a plus, but as we know with Cesaro, you can have all the ability in the world and be nothing in the eyes of Vince without a shining personality. Especially against the Sashas and Bayleys of the world who are both talented and have a definited personality that they work perfectly, she is in trouble.
The NXT fanbase is a problem for her too. They teeter on being that crowd that tries to chant too much for everything, and that's going to hurt her. Then again, for a second she almost showed a little emotion last night, so maybe it will bring out an angry side.
There should be more Vaudevillians in our lives.

That's the thing? Wrestling is pretty much a live stage play and whatever happens during a live show you have to adjust for. What happens when a comedian gets heckled? An ok comedian tries to ignore the person until the person shuts up or (in some places) gets kicked out. A great comedian either embarrasses the heckler or wins them over by engaging them. If you are the former and you let that heckler keep going or get visibly upset by them the crowd turns on your entire set and stop laughing, in the former where you can embarrass or engage them directly you can win the crowd back and control the evening. There's a famous Bill Burr cam video on Youtube of him in Philly having a entire crowd attempting to boo him out of the arena and he goes in on everything he hates about them and their state, where he starts turning jeers to cheers and CONTINUES to berate them for like 5 more minutes. Wrestling is improv like that.
Rocky got "die rocky die".
Vickie had bigger heat than most of the roster for years.
Heel wrestlers in the 60's and 70's had knives pulled out on them in certain states for doing their jobs.
HBK used to be called a faggot by live crowds and Lita was called a whore and a slut because of what was happening in her personal life.

The thing that all those people and countless others in the business had in common is that they took the live disdain and animosity from crowds and used it to fuel to succeed. They also spit the venom right back at people in promos and made tons of money because they knew people displaying that much vocal hatred meant you had them eating out of the palm of your hand.
There's a saying I heard about dating women "it's better than have a girl's emotional outbursts rather than her indifference" ala I'd rather have The Miz's crowd reaction of unending boos than the tepid reactions Heath Slater gets. One has the crowds unfiltered emotional engagement. The crowd is emotionally invested in her enough enough to be vocal about it. I hope she embraces the hate and becomes a wrestling/promo-cutting machine to the point where the crowd always wants to see her perform. If she can't handle it then she should find another source of work.

If you can remember to avoid the Twitter hopefully you should be able to catch it on-demand right after it gets over, just like you can with NXT.

Booing and cheering whomever you want is fine, but if you think chanting every stupid thing that comes into your head is cool and are trying to derail a show because there is something happening that you don't like then I think we just have to disagree.
EDIT: Also, dear NXT, just because your top four women are great doesn't mean ANY two women will make magic. Alexa Bliss/Carmella was awful.
The expectations for this show are way out of whack.
