I think I'm one of the few who was disappointed with the newest season, but I'm hopeful it will be great again, if it gets off the ground.

I'm with you. I really wanted to like it. But as much as I recognize the creativity of how they put the season together, I never ultimately could totally get on board.

I think many were disappointed with S4 simply because the characters and storylines were just so separated, despite the incredibly impressive way the writers tried to tie absolutely every together. Still, there were very few times when more than 2-3 Bluths were on screen at the same time, and probably the three or four worst AD episodes all took place in that season (the two George-centric episodes were notably really poor, and nothing more than plot dumps).

I admire a lot of S4 since it really was a masterpiece of plotting and there was still a lot of very funny material, yet we're all not alone in hoping for a marked improvement in S5.

This. I love season 4. But the ambition of season 4 will always be greater than the finished product. Although that finished product was better than most, it didn't live up to AD standards. But that isn't the fault of anyone or anything other than it was difficult to get all of the actors together to film. I'm not hopeful that season 5 will fix this "problem", but that doesn't make me any less excited for what they create. This is great news. Last week, I randomly decided to re-watch the entire series. The original run is better written and acted than the majority of new shows and holds up insanely well, to the point that I'm still shocked that it first aired over 10 years ago. Things always seem to work out well for the writers.

I think s5 will really cut loose, since not only was 4 only conceived of as what was just the prologue to Hurwitz's central idea -- showing the family apart and bringing them back together at the end (post-murder, post-punch, and post-Cinco) once again "having no choice but to keep them all together" -- but Mitch has now heard all the gripes about the structure of s4 and will likely cater to those needs this time.

I was mostly disappointed in Season 4 because it didn't really feel like Michael was the PoV character anymore.

S4 felt like it was a self-indulgent vehicle for the Tobias character, and as a result, there was just way too much Tobias. I didn't much care for his storyline or anything involving DeBris (or however her name was spelled)...
