The three year divorce is seemingly finalized. No Kalisto torch passing. No leaving the company secure in the hands of Latino sensation babyface Alberto Del Rio.
Credit to the-w.com user Wiretap for observing that the Rey Mysterio Wrestlemania Curse ran its complete 13 years, with his only great Mania match being the one they still cut from 20 minutes to 9.

Just based on how they handled Punk leaving, that would seem to be the case.
But I don't think anyone's actually officially said it yet. | thecubsfan

| #6 Posted on 26.2.15 1653.02 Reposted on: 26.2.22 1655.54 | Ah, now I can talk. WWE's not going to put out a press release because they want this to be as quiet as possible, but they're telling people who ask about the Alumni thing that Rey Misterio is no longer with WWE.
This has been in the works for months. They agreed to the date this would be announced (02/27; a Friday, probably as late on a Friday as possible to bury it) - and then I guess someone at WWE.com was a little bit too ahead of the game? It's very strange end.
Since Rey knew he was going to be free to do other stuff, he had started to talk other people about doing stuff and word of the situation got out. Except it also came with word that if anyone mentioned Rey was leaving before WWE did, then the whole deal was off. There was no sense in talking about it, but I suspect a lot of people knew. I knew, and I'm pretty low on any totem pole.
My third hand understanding is WWE - Vince! - wanted to bring Rey back to TV. But they also wanted him to defend WWE against Alberto del Rio's claims. Rey would not do that. And that was that. I'm sure there's more depth to it and I'm not sure Rey really wanted to come back to WWE, but that one social media awful joke seems to have cost WWE both Del Rio and Misterio.
I'm 95% sure Lucha Underground thought Rey was going to be part of their show when it started - the original HHH handshake deal was Rey was going to be released there - and he's definitely going to be there now. AAA already sent out a teaser that for Rey appearing on their next show that forced me to bite my tongue. (Strong revenge troll move!) He's probably going to do more, but he's probably not going to wrestle all that much.

For who..Rey the wrestler and his deterioration or WWE never really knowing how to use correctly? Rey's deterioration came from years of doing this. He was about a ten year vet prior to coming to the WWE in 2002. I personally loved Rey's run as a wrestler. His costumes at Mania were great. When he was put with someone with some talent, his matches were A+.
I think WWE had no idea how to use Rey other than to sell masks. His Mania push was something that was an utter embarrassment. I am glad he got that last good run with Jericho. WWE is now in a position that he has no good Latino talent when they want to compete globally.

13 years, to be precise, which is how long ago he debuted in the WWE as well. Next month marks the 26th anniversary of Rey Mysterio's debut match. He's spent literally half of his career working for Vince McMahon. There's a whole lot of people who wish they could say that.
Rey is at a point in his career where he would be best used as a mentor to younger guys, and the WWE just doesn't have many guys who can model themselves after him. (Not that he doesn't have knowledge to impart to people who wrestle other styles, but plenty of guys can do that. Mysterio should be teaching the things that made him unique.) I think the industry is better off with Rey in AAA/Lucha Underground at this point. | JustinShapiro

Every time I think of something, I think of something else earlier! Cubs Fan can probably fill in the details of the last year better than me.
2014 - Rey and Triple H have a handshake deal on his release, then the company reneges. Vince unilaterally adds a year to Rey's expired contract because of all the time he's missed. Meltzer reports stories of Rey not cashing his paychecks and literally trying to get fired like a character in a movie, but the company ignoring it to keep him under contract. Konnan starts #freerey hashtag. Rey appears in a video at the end of AAA Triplemania. A storyline for Rey to return around Survivor Series is written and then dropped.
2012 - WWE wants Rey to come back early from knee surgery to work in a 12-man tag at Wrestlemania. He says he won't be ready until May; coincidentally he is then suspended for his second Wellness Violation until June.
2011 - Why did Rey have knee surgery? Rey injures his knee a few weeks before SummerSlam. The company asks him to wait to take time off until the night after SummerSlam so he can wrestle new world champion Alberto Del Rio in his hometown of San Diego. Rey works on the injured knee and then hurts his leg significantly worse trying to have a great match with Del Rio.
2010 - Rey is asked to cancel a long-planned family vacation to replace the injured Undertaker in a PPV match in June. Ironically Rey has a bad reputation for taking too much time to recover from too frequent injuries while UT is exempt from criticism. Rey's request for a limited dates per month schedule like Undertaker is denied. WWE brings up Alberto Del Rio and signs Sin Cara so they can replace Rey as their Latino star.
2009 - Rey is promised a long Intercontinental Title reign and then asked to drop the title to Dolph Ziggler weeks later. He says "wait but you said--" and so they change the finish. He is given his first Wellness Violation for an incorrectly filed prescription. Rey does an interview in Mexican media claiming he should've never been suspended. As a make-good, the company lets him return for a PPV match (and PPV payoff) even though standard policy is you can't be on the PPV if you miss TV due to a suspension.
2002-2008 - lots of injuries, lots of postponing surgeries for a long time, lots of early returns. Think CM Punk podcast. Just two examples, Rey is asked to work with a torn bicep to get over the Big Show/Floyd Mayweather WM angle; a year before he was asked to work on a torn knee to get over Vince McMahon and Umaga for the Donald Trump WM angle. (He was promised a SummerSlam main event match with Vince McMahon for getting beat down by him in San Diego, which he never ended up getting.) | The Goon

Konnan starts #freerey hashtag
Konnan even printed up #freerey shirts. People who work for AAA got them. I did not get one
(also, this is inside baseball, but certain people taking to Twitter to try to get people to post #freerey when they knew he was about to be released so they could get TMZ to post a story giving them credit for what they already knew was going to happen is highly amusing.)
(also, that paragraph is probably why I'm not getting a t-shirt.)
Rey was so sure the handshake deal with HHH was for real the end of it that I believe he started making deals, only to find out he couldn't make those deals because he was still a WWE employee. Even before this happened, Rey (like others) had chances to do thing outside of WWE and WWE would turn them down for him.
No one's ever explained Vince's mindset about the whole thing. My original guess is they wanted to hurt Lucha Underground but later comments suggest they knew very little about that show before it came on the air. Now I just think there's that history of Rey being a super company man and coming back every time he was needed, and maybe they thought he'd do it one more time. Or maybe the timing of this is important and whatever was going on with enforcing Punk's contract forced their hand in handling Rey.
I have trouble with the "HHH would make WWE great if Vince got out of way" narrative, but this whole thing fits with it more than the NXT stuff. I'd assume Rey will be back some day to do the HOF thing and make appearances, but that'll take a lot of bridge rebuilding that didn't need to be done. | | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
