It's the very last Thursday night NXT, and they have loaded the show for us. I assume it's part of a grand plan to keep people from finding out about Lucha Underground. We open up with the triumphant return of our new NXT champion, Sami Zayn. Before he can even say two words, he has to stop and take a victory lap through the crowd. When he finally gets back in the ring and picks up a mic, he wants us to know that the title doesn't just mean he's the best; it means that you can do things your way and still make it. He also does the thing where he claims that the title belongs to all of us, but he one-ups that by claiming that he's not just a wrestler, he's part of a band - Sami Zayn and the Zayniacs. My wife assumes it's a ska band; that's why it's got so many members in it. Anyhoo, the real point of this promo is for Sami to point out that Kevin Owens hurt him, but not bad enough to end him, and now he's back and ready to fight. He's interrupted by Adrian Neville, who's actually out to congratulate him and call him the better man. Sami Zayn's watched wrestling before, though, and knows that what Neville's actually out there for is because he has a contractually mandated rematch. He's getting ready to give him what he wants, but they get interrupted by GM Regal. Regal tells us what we all already know; their match at (R)Evolution was a credit to the entire sport. He makes the rematch, but for next week at their new night and time. Solid decision, because it's a powerful reminder for all of us not to miss next week's show.

The Vaudvillains have a quick bit next, just to let us know that they are manly, and that they are ready for the Lucha Dragons tonight.

Our first actual match of the night is Hideo Itami vs. Curtis Axle. I like your odds Curtis! You've got this one! Actually, it's all Itami to start. He lays in some big kicks, and they land with some nice force. Itami's still hesitating on some of his moves, but he's gotten a lot better since his debut in NXT, and the more he works with American guys in the WWE style, the better he's going to look. Curtis Axle, on the other hand, doesn't look so good. I wanted to give him a chance, but when he goes on offense, the best I can call it is mediocre. Maybe a little time with guys who've wrestled other styles in other countries might help him out, but I'm rapidly losing interest. Itami hears me, and decides to go back on offense with a murderous clothesline. This sets up his DDT Guillotine, and we move into some slaps and kicks that open Axle up for Itami's buzzsaw kick and the pin.
Match Rating: Curtis Axle Is Not As Good As Tyson Kidd

Our next segment is...Tyson Kidd and Natalya! They're still here! This makes my night. Actually, this segment is one of the best they've ever done together. Natty's trying to talk up Kidd, who has a match with Finn Balor next week. Nice. Kidd cuts in on the interview, as he does, to tell Natalya to go check on his cats. Then they argue about whose cats they are. Then Kidd says he's the one who chews their food up for them, and Natalya says that's weird and gross, which she punctuates perfectly with this uncomfortable little laugh. It's amazing. Fact. Kidd eventually does talk about Balor, saying that he's not looking past him, but he's looking past him. Kidd wants to be the face of NXT and the SPCA, because he is a great friend to the animals. Especially cats. But not Grumpy Cat. Fact. Byron Saxton's look at the end of this segment is the cherry on top. Go watch this.

We get a video package recapping the feud between Bull Dempsey and Baron Corbin. The New York Nightmare and the Big Bad Wolf face off for the first time next Wednesday, and they are just loading this show up.

A women's match is next: Alexa Bliss vs. Sasha Banks. Bliss is the newest recipient of new music. Bliss comes out swinging with some stiff shots to Sasha Banks, culminating in a springboard sunset bomb with a very impressive level of snap. Banks kicks out, though, and takes control with a big backbreaker. After that, it's all Sasha. She hits her corner knees to abdomen spot, and then the Bank Statement, and that's it. I would have liked to have seen a lot more of that.
Match Rating: Too Short, Man. Too Short.

Tyler Breeze makes his return next, against a guy I initially peg as a nameless jobber. He's actually a jobber with a name - Chad Gable. I can tell because the crowd's chanting their hearts out for him. It's even written in giant letters on his back! Impossible to miss. Anyhoo, this match is a lot more technical than I expected. Breeze takes charge, and taunts Gable by chanting "Let's Go Gable" at him, which is great. Gable is eventually able to tie up Breeze with a cross-arm breaker while Gable is draped over the ropes. The ref forces the break, and when Gable gets back into the ring, he eats a KILLER beauty shot, right to the face, and Breeze goes over in a more contested match than I had any right to expect.
Match Rating: A Surprising Amount of Mat Wrestling
We go to break after the match, and when we come back the announcers reveal a mysterious stranger watching Breeze from deep in the shadows. Marcus Louis!!! He's the sideshow freak I never knew I wanted.

We get some quick comments from Balor on his match next week. He's looking forward to it. Fact. So am I. Fact.

Our main event is the tag title match between the Vaudvillains and the Lucha Dragons. I just have to say, Aiden English is bigger and more muscular every time he comes out. I can only assume that someone told him he needed to be bigger to make it to the main roster, and he's just going to keep doing what he was told until he gets told otherwise. Kalisto starts this one off fast, with his trademark springboards and arm drags. He tags in Sin Cara, who does a really neat crucifix submission hold that he bridges into a pin attempt, but Gotch is able to kick out. The whole thing spills to the outside, which naturally sets up the Lucha Dragons' double tope. This puts the Dragons on top, but not for long. Gotch grabs English's leg, keeping him safe from a Kalisto springboard arm drag. This becomes the story for the middle of the match, with the Vaudvillains' superior teamwork helping them cut the ring in half. English even takes a minute to sing about it. Unfortunately, all it takes is a half second for Kalisto to flip himself into a tag, and Sin Cara turns the match around. He hits the top rope Sunset Bomb, but Gotch breaks up the pin. Gotch gets dumped for his trouble, and this leads to Sin Cara hoisting Aiden English up into a powerbomb position while Kalisto comes off the top with a spinning corkscrew bulldog/neckbreaker/something!? that murders English dead for the pin.
Match Rating: What Do You Call That? Call A Doctor!
Great tag match, better than their outing at (R)Evolution, actually.

This was a killer show, and they're actually promising us a bigger, better, more important one next Wednesday. Adjust your schedules accordingly, and we'll be back on a new night next week.

A pretty good show this week, but boy, next week's edition looks loaded! An NXT title defense, the Return of Tyson Kidd, and the Big Hoss Fight? Sign me up for that!

Tenken is right in saying that the main event was a better version of their match from REvolution, but as with all other Lucha Dragons matches, I'm left wanting to see a little more out of them. Did Kalisto botch the finish, or was it just poorly thought out? My guess is that it was supposed to be a Powerbomb/Corkscrew Neckbreaker, and Kalisto whiffed on the neckbreaker part. In any case, it was more "LOL?" than "holy shit!"

Itami is getting there, I think, but if he doesn't whip out the GTS soon, this crowd is going to start losing interest in him. For a guy who in Japan looked like he was legit trying to kill his opponents with half his moveset, he sure does seem to be holding back on some of the high-impact stuff (kudos on that clothesline, though). Unfortunately with the cannibalization of Hideo's moveset in WWE (through D-Bry and Punk), and his own hesitation, he's looking like a second-rate version of what fans saw in Japan. I HATE that finisher. Just use a standard Buzzsaw Kick! Or steal the Rainmaker! Boma Ye! Anything!

Line of the Night is Tyson Kidd's "they're my cats" to Byron Saxton right after Nattie leaves. Eternal Douchebag Tyson Kidd on NXT is never a bad thing.

On the other hand, Chas Betts was all over the AWF shows I dragged over here way back when.
