I hated him as an anchor, he took the Olbermann "make a joke and beat it to death" method of delivering commentary into overload. He's responsible for every untalented douche they have on there trying to get their shtick over.
But, as a man I respect the hell out of him, he fought his battle with dignity and Grace and his speech at the ESPYs was very touching. | Promote this thread! | | BigDaddyLoco

I always liked him. The only thing he was responsible for is being different when everyone was trying to be the same, but he did it without putting himself over. He seemed like a good dude. 49 is young. Sad. | supersalvadoran

No, let me correct myself, he *WAS* ESPN. I know the network has been around for much longer but ever since I started watching Sportscenter in the mid-90s, I remember his presence always being somewhere on the channel. It's going to feel weird to not see him or hear a "BOOYAH" on the SC recaps.
In the end, for all the time I remember seeing him on TV, I still can't believe he passed away so young. And you can see by the tearful announcements and tributes Eisen and Storm (among others)gave for him how much of a dear friend he was to everyone there. A terrible loss. RIP | lotjx

I am always going to be a Keith and Dan guy, but I did enjoy Stuart and Rich. I thought his commentary was precise even if a bit flowery. Then again, sports is about telling a story at least in media world and he was one of the best at it. He was also one of the first anchors I remember at actual big time games, I always got a kick out of that. RIP Stuart. | StaggerLee

Leaving two young daughter's behind is terrible and seeing them at the ceremony where he got the Jimmy V award was heartbreaking. I guess I'm just a bit past what his demographic was as far as appreciating his style. | Wpob

I agree with Stagger. I did not like him at all on SportsCenter, but I knew a few people who met him off camera and said he was a genuine person. In interviews he seemed to be a decent guy. His SportsCenter "schtick" just did not sit well with me.
However, it is horrible what happened to him and he fought cancer with grace and dignity. I feel for his poor daughters who he obviously loved more than anything. 49 is way, way to young to die. | Sec19Row53

Yeah, me too. It's tough to sit here and speak ill of the recently deceased, but I think he and Chris Berman are what turned ESPN into a mostly unwatchable product (outside of live sports). | StaggerLee

I agree with all of this. It's always sad when someone dies, especially at his age. It's made even worse because of his kids. He fought until he couldn't and was by all accounts a genuine and nice person off air. His style resonated with a lot of viewers but was never my thing. I liked Dan, Keith, Kilborn, and later Eisen and SVP. | Kevintripod
