| #1 Posted on 31.12.14 1100.35 Reposted on: 31.12.21 1101.51 | So, after six months of billing issues with Uverse, we have cut the cord and decided to go without cable or satellite. We have been watching Netflix and Hulu plus. I've contemplated subscribing to Amazon as well.
Other than those (and waiting for the HBO service to be available) I was wondering which other websites people use to watch shows and movies.
Any recommendations?

| #2 Posted on 31.12.14 2036.23 Reposted on: 31.12.21 2036.31 | I'm not sure there are a ton of other legal options worth mentioning.
We subscribe to Amazon Prime for the shipping benefits so we happily accepted the streaming video service that comes along with that membership. We don't use it a ton but that's because Netflix is amazing.
I'll also mention Crackle. It's an internet-only channel and it's completely free (translation: ad-supported) but it has some decent content. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is probably its most popular original content, but they also have some decent movies and old television shows from time to time as well.
I spent a few hours the other day watching Seinfeld and Sanford & Son reruns after I finished season 2 of CCC.
I have found cutting the cord has been pretty easy to do as long as you can figure out what to do about your sports teams. That part hasn't been totally solved yet (again, legally) and it's especially difficult if you don't live in your teams' home markets.

| #4 Posted on 1.1.15 1820.13 Reposted on: 1.1.22 1821.35 | I "cut the cord" a year and a half ago and have been mostly fine with it. In fact, the biggest thing I've been annoyed about missing are tonight's CFB Playoff games. I can't believe they're not over the air.
So i'm listening to the games on ESPN Radio.
As for other sports, I have SiriusXM with their internet option and can listen to most major sports at home, work, or on the go. That's been my solution.

Yes, we get all the Networks, plus Bounce, MeTV, ThisTV, Ion, AntennaTV and several shopping networks.
I have found ways to see CFB through questionable means, poor picture quality and audio problems make it not worth the bother though.

| #8 Posted on 2.1.15 0711.52 Reposted on: 2.1.22 0714.07 | I was able to watch the games through ESPN 3. I have Comcast, but not ESPN or ESPN 2. So, I am not sure what that is about. I did a year without the cord. I would suggest getting a digital satellite even though mine got two channels at best. Four when I did a bit of a rain dance. Hulu and Netflix got me through the year. The Comcast we have now is the Blast where its high speed internet which Hulu doesn't seem to like as well as 50 channels ontop of HBO for the year with no HD or DVR. I added the $5 sports channels to get Red Zone.
Honestly, I am not above cutting the cord again, but we need the internet and Verizon costs the same without the TV. Verizon is not going to compete with Comcast in my area. | StaggerLee

| #10 Posted on 2.1.15 2008.22 Reposted on: 2.1.22 2009.34 | I "cut the cord", last year and haven't regretted it. We watch everything through our PS3 or Chromecast, now. I got a digital antenna so we can still get local channels. The only live sport I'm into is the Local NFL Franchise and they're always on and live, regardless of network.
I was a little miffed when the MLB Playoffs came along and MLB.tv didn't carry them. I scrambled to pick up the "Fox Sports GO", "TBS" and "Watch ESPN" apps, but they all required a valid cable log-in. Finally got a valid log-in from a family member, but my team had been eliminated by then.
For the record, I used a Comcast log-in and was able to Chromecast ESPN, but not TBS or Fox Sports through their respective apps. Comcast is trying to push their Xfinity app with all those channels on it and they've blocked Chromecasting them. At least in my area. Your local cable provider or non-Comcast company might allow it.
I'll recommend Crackle, as well. It's more of a complimentary app/network, though. They have Sports Jeopardy, which is a fun watch if you can get past the annoying announcer and some of the contestants.
Oh, Crackle also has Barney Miller. You're welcome.
We used the PlayStation network for purchasing single episodes of "Sons of Anarchy", the day after they aired. Ended up costing us about 25 bucks over the course of three months; whereas cable would've run us $450 (decent package with FX in our area starts at $150 a month). | Leroy

When we 'cut the cord' for a period of time, we were able to get a few local channels, as well as a few cable channels (MSNBC, TBS, USA, and a few more) by plugging the coax that would've gone into the cable box into the back of the TV. I believe most cables companies multiplex some of the basic channels with the internet service, hence the reason this works.
Whether or not this is ethical... well... I think that depends on how much you like your cable company, etc.

The installer is supposed to filter out the TV channels, but often if you have cable and HSI and disconnect HSI at the office, they won't want to incur the $100 truck roll cost to them to send someone to your house...

So has there actually been a ruling on this? I'd be very curious as to the details if there has....
I'm not sure I would do it now... as we have great service with Verizon Fios (we get more channels, higher bandwidth and we pay about $40 a month less than we did with TWC and Cox) and at least one other provider in our area, so I don't think I could justify it to myself.
At the time, I was so fed up with our cable company and the slow way in which we'd scale back service and watch our bill slowly creep back up, in addition to the general crappy way we were treated as customers when issues did arise and with no competition so we couldn't go elsewhere, that I lost zero sleep over it. It felt like a little victory over our cable company - and it wasn't like I was climbing telephones poles or breaking into the cable drop box.
But again, that was *my* rationale - others may not be quite so morally comprised.
