This was an outstanding show. So much was done right here that every other wrestling show on TV today looks pitiful in comparison. While I would encourage everyone to watch this show from the beginning, this would be a good starting point if you can't, as there's just enough recap to keep you abreast of the storylines without boring the regular viewers.

The show starts with Big Ryck sitting in Dario Cueto's office, drinking champagne and being congratulated for signing an exclusive contract with Lucha Underground. He demands his signing bonus in cash, which Cueto concedes.

In the temple, Son of Havoc and Ivelisse are in the ring and Ivelisse has the mic, telling the crowd to shut up. She complains that Havoc has been made a joke since coming to Lucha Underground, being matched up against women and minis. "If we had wanted to deal with this, we wouldn't have signed a 7 year contract to wrestle in this dump in front of all of you. We would be living in Nashville." I assume that's supposed to be a shot at TNA, though I'm pretty sure the TNA wrestlers mostly live in Orlando.

Havoc takes the mic and issues an open challenge to anyone in the back who "has the balls to face me, in my ring, man to man."

The call is answered by Pimpinella Escarlata, an exótico. For those not in the know, the exóticos are men who wrestle in drag. Unlike American wrestling, however, there tend to be several of them and they're not treated as default heels or (strictly) comedy faces.

Striker and Vampiro do a good job of putting over the history of the gimmick and Pimpinella. Striker also gets in the insult of the year. "If you know your history, you know there have been many flamboyant stars with effeminate tendencies: Gorgeous George, Adrian Street, Ricky Star, The Miz."

Havoc tries to get the upperhand by jumping Pimpinella while he's taunting Ivelisse, but Pimpinella fires back with multiple open-hand slaps to the chest, then redefines Old School by strutting across the top rope before flying off with a cross body to Ivelisse. Nice little spot from Havoc where he jumps down and Pimpinella jumps over, then does it again but as Pimpinella jumps, Havoc raises up and trips him. Havoc takes over with a flying forearm into the corner, but misses on the other side and the crowd starts chanting for Pimpinella to kiss him. The exotico spends too much time playing to the crowd, however, allowing Havoc to reverse a whip.

Pimpinella does so much float over the top as pivot over on his face with a grace akin to some of Flair's worst botched flips. He's able to get a shoulder into Havoc's gut, though, setting up a top rope arm drag which sends the biker to the floor. Pimpinella then hits a leg lariat from the apron that had the finesse of a Cactus Jack floor dive. He rolls Havoc back into the ring and hits a top rope drop kick but then gets hip tossed into the corner. Havoc goes for the cover but only gets two, so he chokes Pimpinella out in the ropes, using his calf. On the break, Ivelisse takes her turn choking Pimpinella across the ropes.

Pimpinella reverses a whip and goes for a corner charge but is backdropped over the top and falls off the apron to the floor. Either Pimpinella is a master seller or that fall was legit. I'm leaning more toward the latter myself. Ivelisse immediately runs over and lays in the boots, then drags Pimpy (as Vampiro calls him) into position while Son of Havoc does a Johnny Mundo-esque parkour move, holding himself parallel to the floor from the ring post, dropping into an elbow on the floor.

Back in the ring, Havoc hits a handspring elbow "shades of the Great Muta", but then misses a springboard cross body. Havoc goes for an outside-in sunset flip but Pimpinella holds on, until Ivelisse gets involved to give Havoc a close 2 count.

Pimpinella continues selling the shoulder hurt during the earlier fall but manages to hip toss Havoc with the other arm, drawing in Ivelisse with a hip toss of her own. This brings out Mascarita Sagrada who chases Ivelisse around and into the ring, sliding between Havoc's legs to continue the pursuit. In the ensuing Chaos, Pimpinella finally hits the kiss and then schoolboy's Havoc for the pin and the win. The exotico and the mini celebrate by dancing and I smell an upcoming mixed tag.

There were some sloppy moments in the match (and, to be fair, Pimpinella Escarlata is 45 years old) but overall it was a fine showing, proving you can do a comedy match without leaving out the wrestling.

In the back, Dario Cueto is taking a piss. If this were the WWE, that would be your cue to go get a snack because nothing good is upcoming. In Lucha Underground, however, we get a dramatic scene of Johnny Mundo grabbing him by the throat and threatening to kick his ass for robbing him of the $100,000 he feels was his back on the first show. Cueto promises he'll get him the money as long as he doesn't hurt him. Johnny Mundo agrees but steals the key hanging from Cueto's neck as insurance.

Back ringside, we're introduced to Famous B who I suspect is about to become the victim of our first jobber squash of the series. The introduction of Mil Muertes (with Catrina) solidifies that assumption.

Interesting booking for Muertes. He debuts against a legend, moves on to a rising star, and is now facing a jobber. Muertes attacks before the bell, trying to grind Famous B through the canvas with kicks and punches, then drapes him across the bottom rope and distracts the ref while Catrina slingshots the back of Famous B's head against the ring apron.

Muertes whips Famous B into the corner and charges in. B gets his boots up but Muertes simply catches his feet, whips him 619-style around, then slams the back of his head on the ground again. Muertes positions himself across the ring, waiting for Famous B to regain his feet, then breaks him in half with a Kaitlyn-like spear, followed by the Flatliner for the victory. After the pin, Muertes picks up Famous B in a half-nelson so Catrina can administer the Lick of Death.

A promo video for Drago asks "What do you know about dragons?" as a little girl narrates the history of dragons while we watch ring footage of Drago interspersed with footage of him using nunchucks outside of the ring. "Drago Slays Tonight" the text informs us as we go to commercial.

When we return, Drago is already in the ring, receiving his introduction. His opponent, in our first rematch of the show, is King Cuerno. You'll remember that Drago defeated Cuerno in his debut, but Cuerno got revenge last week, hitting his finisher on Drago after Dragon fell to Mil Muertes.

The crowd is solidly behind Drago as the match begins. Cuerno fires off a high speed drop kick to start things off. He fires off some stomps but Drago evades and slides to the outside, hitting a springboard 'rana. Drago does... something with a handspring to the ropes but Cuerno doesn't seem to have any idea what was supposed to happen there, so he flies into Drago with a knees first dropkick. Cuerno hits another dropkick and covers but only gets one, as Angela Fong makes an appearance on the stairs.

Cuerno catches Drago in a fireman's carry but Drago pushes off and hits a dropkick to the knee, followed by a basement dropkick. Cuerno slides to the outside but Drago hits a somersault plancha, as Angela Fong turns and walks away.

Drago hits a modified blockbuster back in the ring, but Cuerno pulls the referee in front of Drago, allowing him to slide back to the floor unharmed. Cuerno tries to buy time on the floor but Drago hits a corkscrew firefly (according to Striker) to drop him once again. Drago rolls Cuerno back in and goes for the fancy rollthrough that won him the match two weeks ago, but Cuerno escapes and then sends Drago to the floor with an enzigueri to the face, followed by his bullet style suicide dive. Cuerno smartly rolls Drago back into the ring where he hits his Thrill of the Hunt driver for the win.

After the bell, King Cuerno kicks Drago repeatedly, before grabbing him by the face and announcing "The hunt... has just... begun!" which gets subtitled despite being in perfectly understandable English.

I'd like to point out that Drago has only won one of his four matches and has never spoken a word, yet is still over because he's been allowed to look strong in every match and the commentators haven't harped on the fact that he keeps losing.

Back from break, Johnny Mundo is in the ring with a mic, reminding everyone that Dario owes him $100,000. He's giving him until the count of 10 to pay up. On six, Big Ryck walks out and tells him to shut the hell up. Ryck suggests Mundo get the hell out of his ring, but is cut off mid-sentence as Mundo dives headfirst over the top rope and unloads a flurry of punches to his face. Mundo then goes back in and continues the count but is interrupted this time by Konnan, who isn't happy about Mundo's actions last week. Konnan informs Mundo that he owes that $100,000 to Puma because Puma has been targeted repeatedly due to Mundo's actions, then Mundo took Puma out with the accidental chair shot last week.

As this his happening, Big Ryck sneaks into the ring and attacks Mundo from behind, but Puma comes down and takes out Big Ryck with a springboard dropkick. Ryck starts to fight back but is ejected by a double dropkick from Puma and Mundo. Puma and Mundo jaw at each other before Puma throws the first punch. They trade fists, then Mundo takes Puma to the floor. Puma reverses, then they make it back to the feet until a bevy of security and officials come down to pull them apart. Both men shove off multiple officials until Dario Cueto comes down to ringside.

Cueto announces that he has a briefcase with $100,000. It was supposed to be Big Ryck's signing bonus, but Big Ryck didn't read the fine print that states he has to earn the bonus, so Cueto is going to suspend the briefcase from the rafters next week and we're going to have a $100,000 Ladder Match. It's refreshing to have a slimy authority figure who's just as happy to fuck over the heels as he is the faces. The only question is, is Puma involved in this ladder match? If not, I suspect Konnan will have something to say about it next week.

Main event time. Chavo Guerrero comes to the ring first, followed by Pentagon Jr. Their opponents are Sexy Star and Fenix. To recap, Sexy Star is seeking revenge on Chavo Guerrero for hitting her with a steel chair after she attempted to intervene on behalf of Blue Demon, who Chavo had attacked after losing to him in the Lucha Underground debut match. Pentagon Jr interfered in Sexy's match against Chavo last week, which drew in Fenix, who has pinned Pentagon in every match he's had since coming to Lucha Underground.

Pentagon tries to get the jump on Sexy Star but she ducks and Fenix kicks him in the face. Chavo tries to get a boot in on Fenix, but he catches Chavo's foot, allowing Star to dropkick him. Fenix then hits a multi-springboard dropkick on Chavo, but as he's celebrating Pentagon gets his hands on Sexy Star. He chucks her out of the ring and goes at it with Fenix, who opens with a flip-catch hurricanrana, sending him out of the ring as well. Chavo then takes over, facing off against Fenix. Crowd boos as Chavo uses chain wrestling and rest holds. Fenix escapes and hits a dropkick and tags in Sexy Star, who has a dropkick of her own for a kneeling Chavo. She kicks as Chavo but he drops her with a shoulder block.

Chavo grinds his boot in Sexy's face, then drags her by the hair to tag in Pentagon. Pentagon chokes her out in the ropes, followed by a boot to the throat, before tagging Chavito back in. Star fights back with the punch in the stomach and a slap to the face and runs over to tag in Fenix. Fenix enters the ring via a top rope dive that Chavo dodges but Fenix just continues across the ring with a forearm for Pentagon. Chavo ducks a kick fron Fenix, but Fenix feints another kick and finally lands a third, but Pentagon lands a kick to Fenix's back, allowing Chavo to turn him inside out with a clothesline. Vampiro likens Chavo's uppercut to Dory Funk. Pentagon comes back in and Fenix attempts another 'rana but gets rocked with a powerbomb instead.

After a tag, Chavo taunts Sexy Star by blowing a kiss, then locks in front facelock on Fenix. Dropkick to the face rocks Fenix again and Chavo gets a two count. Pentagon comes back in only to eat a handspring cutter, followed by an enziguiri for Chavo and Fenix manages to tag back in Sexy Star. Forearms for everyone and then Sexy boots Guerrero in the face and stands on his chest in the corner, running in place with a couple of dozen stomps. Headscissors for Pentagon and then a facewash boot for Chavo who's still sitting in the corner.

Chavo reverses a whip into the corner. Sexy tries to get the boots up but Chavo catches her and slams her into the mat. He appears to be going for a Boston Crab but Fenix comes off with a double stomp to the back, but runs directly into an overhead belly-to-belly into the corner from Pentagon. Sexy Star and Pentagon are the first two back to their feet and Star hits a 1280 tornado DDT. Pentagon rolls out to the floor but Star comes off the top with a nice corkscrew dive, landing on her feet. Chavo gets backdropped to the floor and Sexy Star grabs both opponents, sacrificing herself by holding them in place while Fenix hits a springboard corkscrew moonsault onto everybody.

Chavo makes it back in the ring and Sexy Star goes for a top rope cross body but Chavo catches her with Not The World's Strongest Slam. He goes up for the frog splash but is kicked to the floor by Fenix. Sexy tries a rollthrough on Pentagon but he catches her and has her set up for the Easy Drive but eats a superkick from Fenix, flipping him into a Canadian Destroyer by Star. She then drags Pentagon to the corner where he eats a flying double knees to the face from Fenix and Star pins him for the one-two-three.

Very good match, with a clean finish that still keeps Star from getting revenge on Chavo. Everything about this show was spot on this week, and I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't. It was just a pleasure to watch from start to finish.

The New Yorker has an outstanding September article on exoticos (newyorker.com).

This Mils Muertes match is what we should have had all along: fifth gear death. But again, use that spear to finish.

The booking of Mundo and Puma is PERFECT, and I can't wait for that ladder match.

Pentagon looked legit hurt, and a trainer slid into the ring behind the winners to check him out. Star's corkscrew elbow to the floor (and maybe the stairs) was excellent.

I love this show.

7 year contract is a super inside reference to (other) indy wrestlers not signing to Lucha Underground because of what was said to be 7 years deals. I'd guess this dialogue was more or less lifted from those discussions.

Striker also gets in the insult of the year. "If you know your history, you know there have been many flamboyant stars with effeminate tendencies: Gorgeous George, Adrian Street, Ricky Star, The Miz."

This was Striker's greatest moment - as a human being.

In the ensuing Chaos, Pimpinella finally hits the kiss and then schoolboy's Havoc for the pin and the win. The exotico and the mini celebrate by dancing and I smell an upcoming mixed tag.

Worth noting they used the far camera angle in the building to "show" the kiss. I think Pimpi legit messed up his shoulder on the unintentional fall to the floor, but Pimpi's also been slowing down a lot the last few year and rarely works outside of opening show tag matches. Pimpi's last singles TV match before this was in 2011.

Drago hits a corkscrew firefly (according to Striker)

I was and am so confused at "firefly". What? Why? Not bad as much as random.

The only question is, is Puma involved in this ladder match?

Yea, they announced it as a three way. Though with Castro & Cortez around, it's probably going to be five guys falling from high places.
