Absolutely awful. One of those things you never think could happen here. Shocking to hear about the solider who died guarding the war memorial. That probably seemed like the safest job you could get.
This shouldn't happen anywhere, but Ottawa is a such a beautiful city. I was there for a week in the summer and loved it. I have one friend who just moved there and another who is there right now on vacation. Glad to hear they're safe - and you as well, EN.

I work about a block away from the War Memorial.
Quite the scene on the street today. I can't remember hearing so many sirens, or seeing that many police officers in one place. Catching a glimpse of what I guess was a sniper team or something up on a nearby roof was something else. I have been in my office all day.
We've been on lockdown since late morning, though we have been allowed to leave the building since 3 (but if you leave, you ain't getting back in - always pack a lunch, folks!).
This is just one of those things you never imagine happening in YOUR hometown.

Thanks, James. And good to hear that you're safe too, Chris.
An ISIS Twitter account sent out a photo of the shooter. So yeah, terrorism.
Meanwhile, Click Here (thestar.com). It turns out the guy who has a ceremonial role in the House of Commons is a 29 year vet of the RCMP, and apparently when you retire from the RCMP you don't retire from being a complete BADASS - he shot the suspect who was endangering some more lives.
