Well, it looks like Gotham from the Arkham games. I don't know about Selena witnessing the Wayne murders as well as being Bruce's stalker. Donald Louge rules. Gordon needs to look like Gordon not some random lead in a cop show. The hints to the other villains ran from cool like who might that comedian be to you have go to be kidding me with Ivy. Penguin was the real standout villain highlight, I can't wait for him to kill Jada Picket Smith.
Barbara Gordon getting Gail Kaine's origin including the lesbianism was awkward. I prefer Renee Montoya to be the young cop who believes in Batman instead whatever this is. Alfred is a mixed bag. Its cool to have the 3rd Doctor's son as the character and give off some of that 3rd Doctor bad assery. Yet, he is a potty mouth and loud, like ridiculously loud. The kid playing Bruce is good. Kid characters have it rough. So, he gets a pass.
The show has potential and feels like it is doing a lot in the hour it was given. The real problem is when they run out of things to do with Gordon and the fans want Batman. I give it til Season 3 til we see the costume or have Bruce face the court of owls.

Eek! I had a completely different reaction to this. I thought it was terrible wit only two good things going for it.
I like Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue, and I'd like to think the two of them can make the show work, but based on this first episode, I'm not very hopeful.
Every single bat-villain felt out of place especially the ridiculous Catwoman being seemingly everywhere, Riddler working as a cop, the slim/sexy Penguin, Poison Ivy... they were used for one reason and one reason only, to give Batman fans a reason to continue watching between comercial breaks. And they were all used badly. This was especially maddening with the Barbara Gordon character. Babs is supposed to be Jim Gordon's daughter, not his wife/girlfriend (I'm not sure if they're married from this episode) who is also Renee Montoya's ex-girlfriend. I already foresee them planning to turn her into Batwoman later in the series, which also makes no sense.
The city Gotham also felt very generic. It might as well have been Chicago or New York or Boston. The show is called Gotham, use that. Make the city a character.
The directing was pretty piss poor as well. That scene with Jim Gordon running through the sweatshop was terrible. That one bit where they had the camera right in his face as he was running just looked stupid and cheap. I couldn't stop laughing at that for a good 10 minutes.
I'll give one more episode, only because of the two leads. Again, I enjoy both of them in many other things, so I feel like I owe them that much, but I just really hated this episode and it'll have to do something pretty fucking amazing to hook me in.

I won't go as far as Cerebus, but I wasn't thrilled, and I agree with a lot of his points. McKenzie (I keep wanting to call him "Jeremy Renner") was good, and I love Logue from Terriers, so that's good. For the most part, the acting was good throughout. The scenes involving Bruce and Gordon (not only together) had some real emotional weight. But, yeah, the introduction of the Rogues Gallery was WAY too heavy-handed. Aren't any of Batman's enemies his own age? I mean, really, Catwoman SAW his parents' murder, and The Riddler was the ballistics expert on the case? Eep.
I found the music very heavy-handed as well. Also, Alfred is supposed to be POSH. That was one character I thought really didn't work here. And I didn't like that it was set in the present but in many ways looked retro. Like they wanted to have their cake and eat it, too.
Having watched Touch, it's so weird for me to see David Mazouz talk! He was good, though.

I saw pieces of this while watching RAW, and my initial thoughts are that it's pretty rough, but it's got a lot of promise. I agree with the general thoughts here; the acting is good, but the material mostly isn't. I did like the look of the city, but use of the Rogue's Gallery was generally piss-poor and unnecessary at this time. And why change Poison Ivy from Pamela Isely to Ivy Pepper when you're just going to keep the Riddler as Eddie Nigma? That was just an odd decision.

It seemed to pick up once we first moved away from Bruce Wayne, but it worked too hard to sneak in as many Batvillains as possible. If they wanted to do Batman Without Batman, Gotham Central is a great template, and it allows them to put the cops forward. This Gordon is not the Gordon we're familiar with. They could have put another Gotham cop in his place (Montoya, even) and accomplished the same thing.

I guess they are going with the logic that the Rogues Gallery made Batman, unlike the Nolan logic that Batman made the Rogues Gallery. Or Year One logic.
Was that comedian the Joker reference for this episode. I read somewhere that there will be a Joker reference in every episode.
