Freshman cast members Brooks Wheelan, Noël Wells and John Milhiser were let go while Nasim Pedrad, who appeared on the show for five seasons, is leaving to co-star in the new Fox comedy “Mulaney.”
No big surprise that Wheelan and Milhiser got the ax. I had told my wife that I predicted they wouldn't be back due to them never really being in any sketches.
But I was really shocked that Noël Wells didn't make it for another season.

Last year's cast was really bloated (17 people!) and Wells, Milhiser and Whelan simply were at the bottom of the totem pole, especially due to the recurring trend of multiple guest stars popping up in almost every episode. Mooney and Bennett stood out because their had their own niche with the digital videos, and O'Brien generally made more appearances (because he's a longtime SNL writer) but the other three were kinda left out to dry.
Wells had her Lena Dunham impression, Whelan had his couple of standup bits on Update and Mihiser had...uh, I guess that stage parent skit with Lady Gaga was it, as that was literally his only starring role all season. | StaggerLee

None of these are really big losses I guess. I think Milhiser was a writer before? He might get to stick around in that capacity. | Wiretap
