The best part of this is that Miami's 2015 first round pick is held by... Cleveland. | Big Bad

How does that work? I've always heard about protected picks but I don't understand how you can trade something that can become so valuable it is no longer part of the trade? If Miami gets a top-10 pick, what do they give to Cleveland in its place? | JALman

I'm unsure of the Cavs team chemistry, especially with a new-to-the-NBA head coach. | thecubsfan

In this specific case, the breakdown (from this list of trades involving future draft picks) is Cleveland's pick is top 10 protected for 2015 and again in 2016, but then unprotected in 2017.
The pattern is like that for first round picks - if the pick is protected one year, it rolls over and is usually to the next year with lesser or no protection.
(There are second round pick trades that work differently, where if the pick is in the protected area, that's that and the trading team gets nothing - but they're second round NBA draft picks so no one cares much.) | EddieBurkett
