I called this back in November. I tried to get my brother to buy Cavs tickets for opening night for about a month, and they aren't on sell yet. What have the Cavs odds to win the East gone to from a week ago?

Really interesting from a basketball standpoint, as even without the rumoured Kevin Love deal he likely has found a better 2014 roster (and almost certainly better for the future). Houston looks awesome too.

The best part of this is that Miami's 2015 first round pick is held by... Cleveland.

That Miami first rounder is top-10 protected, though, and the way the Heat's offseason is going, the Cavs won't be getting the extra pick.

How does that work? I've always heard about protected picks but I don't understand how you can trade something that can become so valuable it is no longer part of the trade? If Miami gets a top-10 pick, what do they give to Cleveland in its place?

At least my Atlanta Hawks have a chance at the division title now.

I'm unsure of the Cavs team chemistry, especially with a new-to-the-NBA head coach.

In this specific case, the breakdown (from this list of trades involving future draft picks) is Cleveland's pick is top 10 protected for 2015 and again in 2016, but then unprotected in 2017.

The pattern is like that for first round picks - if the pick is protected one year, it rolls over and is usually to the next year with lesser or no protection.

(There are second round pick trades that work differently, where if the pick is in the protected area, that's that and the trading team gets nothing - but they're second round NBA draft picks so no one cares much.)
